Taylor 269 SEB By appointment 195 HHS 370-2333 SYLLABUS taylor@oakland.edu • “Organic Chemistry,” 5th edition, Paula Yurkanis Bruice, Pearson Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2007. • “Study Guide and Solutions Manual- 5th Ed.,” Paula Yurkanis Bruice, Pearson Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2007. • A web site is also available at: http://www.prenhall.com/bruice/ • A set of molecular models is also highly recommended. Prerequisite: General course Description: CHM 234 or equivalent. This course is a continuation of CHM 234. CHM 235 will focus on the topics covered in Chapters 13-22,26,27 of your text. These topics include: proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR & 13C-NMR) for identification of organic compounds; aromatic compounds; reactions of benzene and substituted benzenes: chemistry of carbonyl compounds with emphasis on nucleophilic acyl substitution and addition, nucleophilic addition-elimination, and reactions at the α-carbon; some oxidation-reduction reactions; more chemistry of amines; and an introduction to biologically important molecules such as carbohydrates; amino acids, peptides, proteins; lipids; and nucleosides, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. For each chapter, you will be expected to be able to answer the problems in the chapter as well as assigned problems from the additional problem set at the end of each chapter. Although these practice problems will not be a part of your grade, successfully solving and understanding the solutions to these problems should help you master the material covered during lectures. You are responsible for learning all the material in the text (unless excluded) and all supplemental information provided by the instructor. Examinations: There will be 2 examinations, a Midterm scheduled for Monday, July 30, and a Final scheduled for Monday, August 20. The Final examination will only cover material presented during the second half of the course. Quizzes: In addition to the midterm and final examinations, there will be 5 short quizzes scheduled at times indicated on the attached tentative lecture/exam/quiz schedule. Each quiz will be given during the last 30-40 minutes of the scheduled lecture period. Each quiz is worth 25 points. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped. It is strongly suggested that in order to do well on these quizzes, you should review the lecture and text material constantly. All quizzes and exams will be multiple choice – you will need to purchase scantron forms – Form # 815-E for the quizzes and Form # 882-ES for the two exams. Grading: Your final grade in CHM 235 will be computed based on a total of 500 points: Midterm 200 Final 200 Best 4/5 quizzes @25pts/quiz 100 Total 500 The following tentative grading scale can be used to estimate your grade at any juncture in the course ≥450 (≥90%) 4.0 375 (75%) 3.0 300 (60%) 2.0 225 (45%) 1.0 <225 (<45%) 0.0 Policy on attendance and missed exams and quizzes: 1. Attendance for lectures is optional. 2. Missed quizzes and exams will be given a grade of zero unless there is a valid excuse that can be substantiated in writing. In these cases you must make arrangements with the instructor to make up the missed exam or quiz. Cheating: Although the vast majority of students at Oakland do not cheat, it is naïve to believe that cheating does not occur. For the protection of the honest majority, the instructor will make every effort to prevent cheating. A student will be referred to the Academic Conduct Committee for review if the student is suspected of cheating by: (1) copying on exams/quizzes, (2) changing answers on answer sheets after they have been scored (Note: scored Scantron answer forms are photocopied before they are returned to the student), (3) having another person take a quiz/exam, (4) obtaining quiz/exam questions prior to the quiz/exam date. A student found guilty of academic misconduct faces suspension or permanent dismissal from the University.
