Thorburn Associates (TA) specializes in the design and engineering of acoustics,
technology, and lighting for multi-functional arenas. Background noise,
audiovisual displays and lighting all impact a facility’s atmosphere and require
careful detailing. With experience on over 2600 projects, one of TA’s strengths is
our ability to provide an integrated solution for these technical aspects of the
design. Our designers and engineers understand the special considerations
needed to make an event center a success.
Acoustical Engineering combines the wall and ceiling finish materials with the
physical shape of the interior space to bring quality sound within a venue. By
working with the design team we can identify surfaces and finish material that
will promote natural acoustics.
Technology System Design uses audiovisual, sound systems, security and
structured cabling to support the acoustics of the environment. Acoustics and
technology works together to enhance the guest experience.
Lighting Design transforms a space into an event. Combined with acoustics and
technology, lighting has the power to bring a space to life.

TA provides design and engineering for acoustical, technology, and lighting systems for event centers, convention
centers and large venue arenas. Founded in 1992 by principals who have consulted on and managed over 2600
projects, TA has worked on over one hundred event centers ranging from convocation centers to entertainment
venues. TA provides an integrated approach in finding solutions to make your project a success for live speakers,
concerts, graduations and sports events.
AZUSA PACIFIC FELIX EVENTS CENTER
Los Angeles, California
The Richard and Vivian Felix Event Center is an elegantly designed,
modern arena on the west campus of Azusa Pacific University. This
arena provides a functional and accommodating venue for a full array
of public events including musical performances, banquets, lectures,
conferences, sporting events, exhibitions, and more. The two level
Felix Event Center features state-of-the-art design in lighting and
sound equipment. TA provided acoustical and audiovisual systems
design for this facility.
CABARRUS ARENA & EVENTS CENTER
Concord, North Carolina
The Cabarrus Arena & Events Center is the region’s newest and most
innovative exhibition center, offering a flexible floor plan and stateof-the-art features. With a 5,000 sq ft arena and a 150,000 sq ft event
space, the arena offers more meeting, banquet and exhibition
options than any other facility in the area. TA provided acoustical
consulting including initial acoustical design on the facility, sound
system evaluation, peer review of initial sound system and additional
room acoustics services during construction.
CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY CONVOCATION CENTER
Buies Creek, North Carolina
This was a new construction of a 3,200 seat facility that will be used
as the University basketball arena and also for Convocation
ceremonies as well as other functions during the year. TA provided
acoustical consulting which included room acoustics and mechanical
noise and vibration control for the main arena of the facility. In the
area of Audiovisual Systems Design, TA provided sound systems
design for the main arena only.
WILMINGTON CONVENTION CENTER
Wilmington, North Carolina
Wilmington Convention Center is a 93,000 square feet convention
center. The current program includes exhibit hall, ballroom,
breakout rooms, and support spaces all on a single level. For
Acoustical Engineering, we provided room acoustics, mechanical
noise and vibration control and sound isolation as required for the
convention center, hotel, and parking garage. For Audiovisual
Systems Design, we provided design services for the Exhibit Hall,
Grand Ballroom, Junior Ballroom, Board Room, five Meeting Rooms
and Pre-Function Spaces.

SELECTED PROJECT EXPERIENCE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Thorburn Associates (TA) has completed numerous performing arts centers. These facilities have special demands which require tailoring of technology, acoustics and lighting to all work together on different levels to meet the needs. One of TA’s strengths is combining our specialties to find integrative technical solutions to assure the project’s success. DEANZA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Cupertino, California The 20,500 square foot theater was designed to accommodate lectures, dance and music, cinema and drama, and to facilitate rapid changeovers from one use to another. TA teamed with DES Architects to provide acoustic and audiovisual consulting for this state‐of‐the‐art project featuring a 400‐seat theater and adaptable, technologically advanced learning spaces. TA managed to insert a lot of technology into a very small space. This building has achieved LEED‐silver certification. BARTLETT COMMUNITY THEATRE Anchorage, Alaska This new performing arts wing includes rehearsal rooms for band, choir, orchestra, and dance with a 400‐seat auditorium with full production capabilities. The rehearsal rooms have audio systems for music recording and playback. The auditorium's sound system includes capabilities for small presentations with no technical support using a plug and play automatic mixing feature. Larger productions use mixers located either in the control booth or at a mix position in the audience area. The system supports the future addition of front projection video and computer sources. MARTIN METHODIST COLLEGE, FINE ARTS CENTER
Pulaski, Tennessee A 79 year old historic gymnasium on campus was converted into a performing arts center. The renovated facility contains a small auditorium, choir rehearsal hall and office spaces on the first floor and a music classroom, art classroom, painting studio and small art labs on the second floor. TA provided room acoustics, sound isolation and mechanical noise and vibration control for the overall facility with special concentration on the auditorium and choir rehearsal hall. SAN FRANCISCO
