Leadership Conference
Saturday, January 18, 2014

9:30 – 10:00am: Opening Keynote: WiSE Alumna Sarah Steffen, Halliburton
South Ballroom
10:00 – 11:00am: Workshop 1: Micro-aggressions & Micro-inequities
North Reiman Ballroom
Kaitlyn Bunker, Michigan Technological University
Many times throughout your life, in school, in your career, etc., you may be treated in a manner that does not “feel” quite right. What you may be
experiencing are micro-aggressions or micro-inequities. These experiences can occur in one-on-one interactions or in group settings. The effects can and do
impact your career, both when they occur and due to their accumulation over time. After defining these terms, we will discuss how to identify them in order
to increase your awareness, along with methods to positively deal with them.
10:00 – 11:00am: Workshop 2: Conflict Management
Uelner Executive Boardroom
Barb Hunt & Lin Chape, Vermeer
Have you ever had a conflict with someone and wished afterwards that you could have handled it better? Conflict comes about from differences - in needs,
values and motivations. Conflict is not a problem in itself - it is what we do with it that counts. Conflict management builds stronger and more cohesive
organizations and more rewarding relationships, enabling personal differences to be bypassed and new possibilities to be opened up.
11:10am – 12:10pm: Lean-In
South Ballroom, All students attend.
Elizabeth Ray, Reetika Bhandari, Monica Dunbar, Rachel Kovach, Paige Martino, Rockwell Collins
The Rockwell Collins team will share what they have done to support women new to the company and how they encourage female employees to take
leadership roles. Imagine that you are a new hire in a large company. How do you ask those questions that can be perceived from the double standard
viewpoint? For example, if a man asks the question, he’s ambitious, but if a woman asks the question, she’s an upstart. In the peer mentoring circle, those
questions get answered with candor - and humor.
