Metasys Integrator—Metasys Integrator Emerson Control Techniques Application
lntroduction
This document explains Metasys Integrator Emerson Control
Techniques applications. This document should be used with the Metasys
Integrator technical bulletins, which provide information on installing and
commissioning the Metasys Integrator unit. For information on Emerson
Control Techniques equipment, see Emerson Control Techniques
documentation (obtainable from an Emerson Control Techniques
representative).
Note: If you use a Universal Packaging Module (UPM) enclosure, you
must install the Metasys Integrator 300 Series in a two high
enclosure (EN-EWC25-0) rather than a one high enclosure
(EN-EWC13-0) as shown in the figures in this application note.
Application
Details
The Metasys Integrator unit allows Emerson Affinity and Eclipse AC
Drive Controls to become an integral part of the Metasys and
Metasys Companion Networks. Once the Emerson devices
(and B & B Electronics RS-232 to RS-422 converter) are connected to a
Metasys or Companion Network via the Metasys Integrator unit, Emerson
AC Drive Controls data is accessible to the full complement of Metasys
Building Automation System (BAS) features, including Change-of-State
(COS) monitoring, alarm notification, trend, and totalization.
The Affinity drive is appropriate for Heating, Ventilating, and Air
Conditioning (HVAC) applications and can be integrated for monitoring
and supplementary information. The Metasys Integrator unit supports
monitoring of drive status, alarm conditions, total runtime, kWh cost,
in addition to other points. For commands, the Metasys Integrator unit
supports only the resetting of drive fault alarms and runtime values.
For closed loop control, the speed and on/off status should be directly
controlled by an Application Specific Controller (ASC).
The Eclipse drive is appropriate for industrial applications and should be
integrated only if the application does not require closed loop control.
For commands, the Metasys Integrator unit supports the following: drive
speed, reset runtime values, reset fault alarms, drive start, drive stop, jog,
and direction (forward/reverse).
Connect the RS-232 to RS-422 converter to the Metasys Integrator RS-232
port. Once connected, the converter is the interface between Emerson
devices and non-Emerson devices (such as the Metasys Integrator unit).

Each Metasys Integrator vendor port can connect to one converter.
Each converter can connect up to 32 Emerson AC Drive Controls. The
AC Drive Controls are connected in a daisy chain configuration.

Metasys Network, and Figure 2 shows Emerson Affinity AC Drive
Controls integrated into a Metasys Companion Network.

Component
Requirements
To integrate Emerson Control Techniques equipment, you need:
•
RS-232 to RS-422 converter (B & B Electronics product)
•
Emerson Eclipse or Affinity AC Drive Controls
•
for the Affinity application, application specific controllers that
provide closed loop control. The controllers are hardwired to the
AC Drive.

unit
•
Belden 8723 or equivalent RS-422 four wire cable for connecting the
converter to AC Drives
•
Metasys Integrator unit
•
N2 Bus (for connecting the Metasys Integrator unit to the Metasys or
Companion Network)
•
portable Personal Computer (PC) for downloading vendor
communication tables (.VCT files) and network setup information into
the Metasys Integrator unit, and for running diagnostics
•
cable for connecting portable PC to the Metasys Integrator unit
•
the correct vendor communication table (.VCT file) to download into
the Metasys Integrator unit (supplied on Metasys Integrator CD-ROM)
This document describes the RS-232 and RS-422 cable and the vendor
communication tables. Emerson Control Techniques documentation
describes their equipment. The remaining components are described in the
Metasys Integrator technical bulletins.

Requirements
Integration between the Metasys Integrator unit and Emerson Control
Techniques has been tested with the equipment listed in Table 1. Changes
to this equipment or integration of Emerson Control Techniques products
not discussed in this document require additional software development

Design
Considerations
8
When integrating Emerson Control Techniques equipment, keep the
following considerations in mind:
•
Make sure all Emerson Control Techniques equipment is set up,
started, and running properly before attempting to integrate with
Metasys or Companion systems. (The Emerson Control Techniques
representative is responsible for operation of Emerson Control
Techniques equipment.)
•
Make sure the Emerson Control Techniques Control Board baud rate is
set to 9600 baud. (The Emerson Control Techniques representative is
responsible for setting the Circuit Monitor’s baud rate.)
•
RS-232 cable distance between the Metasys Integrator unit and the RS232 to RS-422 converter is a maximum of 50 feet.
•
RS-422 cable distance between the converter and the last Emerson
Control Techniques device is a maximum of 4,000 feet.
•
Remember that the Affinity application requires application specific
controllers that provide closed loop control, hardwired to the drive.

Metasys Integrator Setup
To set up the Metasys Integrator unit, use a portable PC connected to the
Metasys Integrator Terminal Port. The Metasys Integrator unit setup
involves:
•
downloading the correct vendor communication table (.VCT file)
•
setting up the ports
•
assigning network addresses to the controllers
The following table provides setup information specific to Emerson
Control Techniques applications. For detailed procedures, see the Metasys

Custom Integration
For information on integrating products that are not discussed in this
document, first refer to the Metasys Compatible Global Catalog, an online
list of released Connectivity products. If this list does not provide the
information you require, consider using the System Integration Project
Data Sheet to request a custom contract from the System Integration
Team.
Both the Metasys Compatible Global Catalog and the System Integration
Project Data Sheet can be accessed from The Advisor by performing the
following steps:
1.
Click on the Systems Products button located on the left side of
The Advisor home page.
2.
Click on the Product Literature link.
3.
Click on the Manuals-FANS link.
4.
Click on the 629.0 Metasys Connectivity Sales Resource Manual link.
5.
Find the System Integration Project Data Sheet link in the table of
contents. Click on this link to view an online copy of the System
Integration Project Data Sheet, or click on the Metasys Compatible
Global Catalog link below it to view a list of released Connectivity
products.
The System Integration Project Data Sheet (LIT-6290052) is also found in
the Metasys Connectivity Sales Resource Manual (FAN 629).
