ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 Ready, Set, Grow! > Impact > Inspire > Advocate > Encourage > Achieve > Innovate > Collaborate 2 OUR MISSION OUR VISION OUR VALUES To provide children facing adversity with strong, enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. All children achieve success in life. Children. Integrity. Teamwork. Ethical behavior. Cultural diversity. Mutual respect. High-quality volunteers and staff stewardship. Responsible growth. YOU Make an Impact Through Big Brothers Big Sisters To Our Donors, Volunteers, and Program Participants, It’s been a BIG year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, and our team is honored to continue serving the children, families, and communities of Southern Indiana and Kentucky. Our organization is proud to conduct outreach to the children of Kentuckiana who need us most. We know children are our most precious resource and we continue to be inspired by creating strong, lasting matches that make real differences in their lives. We are dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and committed to cultivating confidence, hope, and opportunity for every family we serve. We are also excited to report that the 2014-2015 year delivered new evidence that YOU are actively making a difference through the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs. YOU make it possible for more children to receive quality friendships and adult guidance. YOU contribute to the resources we need to improve support for volunteer Bigs and families. We may be the vehicle for change, but YOU are in the driver’s seat. Because of your passion, initiative, and promise to improving the lives of at-risk children in 2014 and 2015, our agency saw an exciting 28% increase in volunteer inquiries, successfully paired 586 new matches, and positively served over 900 youth across the region. The 2014-2015 youth evaluations also showed that our mentored youth are doing better in school and improving their social skills and relationships. Over the years, we’ve watched as many Littles raised their grades, improved their attitudes about learning, and achieved improved behavioral success in social situations – all thanks to the support they found in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. When we match caring mentors with children in need, the resulting relationships are true testaments to the power of mentoring and supportive friendships. In the pages that follow, you’ll see just a few of these success stories that prove YOU are making a huge difference. Please enjoy the stories and data included in this year’s annual report – we thoroughly enjoyed seeing it all unfold! Very Sincerely, Jeri Swinton, President and CEO Jessica Klein, Board Chair 3 Average cost required this period to create and support a match at no cost to program participants: 85 $ VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT 275 170 $ $ COSTS PER VOLUNTEER ENROLLMENT PROCESS 100 $ MAKING INTRODUCTIONS 550 $ SUPPORTING THE MATCH 1,295 $ AVERAGE ANNUAL COST PER MATCH 4 115 $ OPERATIONAL COSTS REVENUE & OTHER SUPPORT 2014-2015 EXPENSES 2014-15 3% 17% GIFTS IN KIND 63,050 FUNDRAISING 20% 309,454 METRO UNITED WAY 377,183 36% SPECIAL EVENTS 671,616 9% MANAGEMENT & GENERAL 26% FOUNDATION/ GOVT. This is when Bigs and Littles spend quality social time together, participating in communitycentric activities they both enjoy, such as attending a sporting event, going for a hike, checking out a local museum, or even just hanging out and talking. Regardless of the activity, we encourage our Bigs to use this time to help their Littles enhance communication skills, develop relationship skills, and support positive decision-making. Every Big who participates in the community-based mentoring program is carefully screened and subsequently matched with his or her Little based on background, 8 the personal preference of parents or youths, geographical proximity, and a shared common belief system for social values. In this way, we are able to proactively assemble mutually rewarding matches, where Bigs and Littles want to spend time together freely and on a regular basis. As an added bonus, the community-based mentoring program is flexible on everyone’s schedules. Bigs and Littles meet 2-3 times each month, on days of their choosing, for at least one year – and the outcomes are phenomenal! These special, one-to-one relationships have been known to improve school attendance and grades, enhance various relationships with family members, and even impart new skills or new, healthy hobbies. School or Site-Based Mentoring In our school or site-based mentoring program, Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one sessions at a school, library, neighborhood community center, or other set location, typically for an hour, at least once a week. During these sessions, Bigs and Littles can focus on friendship and school at the same time, and while it is not specifically a tutoring program, research has shown that school or site-based mentoring increases academic performance and improves attitudes toward school. Some of the biggest supporters of the school or site-based mentoring program are teachers. They see firsthand the benefits of students spending time with their Bigs. Their students return to the classroom more confident, excited to learn, and eager to succeed. School to Work Mentoring New to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana in 2014-2015, the School to Work mentoring program is an innovative approach to our traditional one-to-one mentoring programs. In partnership with Seneca High School, Humana, and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), this program focuses on imparting employable skill sets, igniting career path goal setting, and strengthening Littles’ motivation to graduate from high school and college. It utilizes resources provided by corporate partners—such as employee volunteers and funding—and seeks to expose Littles to all the dynamics of a professional working environment. In practice, employee volunteers are matched with student scholars in professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships. They meet on-site at the volunteer’s workplace once a month for three hours and work through a specific curriculum provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff and academic partners. Corporate partners benefit from the program by meeting their own philanthropic goals while supporting employee development and morale, whereas the student scholars are exposed to valuable learning opportunities and are inspired to achieve a brighter future. We are thrilled to share that the inaugural year of this program yielded incredible results too! Of the student scholars enrolled: > 80% showed improvements in educational expectations > 100% shared that the program gave them access to special adults (other than parents/guardians) who care about them and influence their decisions > 92% avoided suspension or decreased their suspension rates from the year prior. Of the employee volunteer mentors enrolled: > 100% agree that they are proud to work for a company that supports volunteer programs, > 92% strongly agree that being a mentor has given them a better understanding of the social challenges faced by youths in their community, and > 100% agree that School to Work is a great way for their company to invest in the community. 9 signature fundraising event. We believe that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life when they have access to strong, positive role models. To deliver that access, our agency concentrates on four strategic initiatives as the cornerstones of our efforts: > Focus on Quality > Drive Innovation > Promote Leadership & Collaboration > Emphasize Sustainable Resources 12 Focusing on Quality Mentoring succeeds when the right matches are made, when Bigs and Littles can develop long-term friendships that make a real impact. That’s why one of our top ongoing priorities is the elevation and refinement of our matching system. We are determined to build the most efficient, targeted, and measurable matching system possible by utilizing proven strategies for training, match support, coaching, recruitment, and outcomes. Driving Innovation One of the most significant factors that will affect quality as we move forward is our agency’s ability to change and adapt. Yes, our core programs are tried and true, but we can make an even BIG-ger impact on the children we serve with a LITTLE bit of innovation. In 2014-2015, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana launched the cutting-edge School to Work program to great success, updated our agency’s best practices based on results from professional research initiatives conducted in 2012-2013, and further invested in our Humana Legacy program, which focuses entirely on recruiting and matching volunteers ages 55 and older because of the age group’s tendency to forge long matches. Promoting Leadership & Collaboration We are proud to be a leading resource in building a bright future for Kentuckiana communities, which is why we proactively seek mutually beneficial partnerships with like-minded parents or guardians, organizations, foundations, schools, and volunteers. We are inspired to become THE region’s charity of choice by personalizing the donor experience, focusing on partnership development and donor retention, and staying relevant through local business collaborations. Emphasizing Sustainable Resources Although our services are free to Littles and their families, achieving our mission requires sustainable resources. We need a reliable, consistent pool of volunteers and diversified revenue streams. Therefore, it’s critical that we leverage the successes of our programs and momentum of our events to build brand awareness and increase visibility within our community. In doing so, we equip our team to improve the stewardship of our existing donors and volunteers as well as successfully recruit future advocates. 13 Statement of Goals for 2016-2020 Here We Grow Again! 14 > Grow children served to 1,700 > Achieve longer matches with 75% retention after one year > Grow revenue to $3 million > Reduce Littles’ waiting time to 90 days > Become widely recognized as the leading charity of choice > Grow our staff to balance increasing number of children served 15 Donors, Sponsors, Contributors Dream Makers $100,000-$499,999 Brown-Forman Corporation Commonwealth of Kentucky Humana Foundation James Graham Brown Foundation Metro United Way, Inc.
