Check Out Our New Website: www.bethanynw.org February 2015 “Breakfast With Bethany” Raises Over $57,000 For Snohomish County Seniors By Ken Hammond Director of Development The 5th Annual “Breakfast With Bethany” fundraiser was held on November 19, 2014, at the Everett Holiday Inn, raising over $57,000 to help our senior and disabled residents that call Bethany, “home.” This year’s Master of Ceremonies was Stitch Mitchell of Everett’s KXA-1520 radio. Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson made some opening remarks and was followed by keynote speaker, Larry Hanson, longtime publisher of the Everett Herald. Former Everett Transitional Care patient, Paul Dennis, also spoke to the large crowd about how much he appreciated the nursing and rehabilitation staff’s support. Frank Fargo was selected as the recipient for the prestigious 2014 Raili M. Hanson Inspirational Award. The recipients for this award are selected and recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts in our community. Frank has supplied over 6,300 hot showers for the homeless in Snohomish County twice each week at local churches for the last six years. “A lot of people need help. They’re needy, and they still are people. And I like people.” A big thank you to Christina Flores and her hard-working crew at the Everett Holiday Inn, and especially to all our staff, volunteers, and attendees. From therapists with 30+ years of experience, to new grads who came to us as students, our collective knowledge and passion make our team the best in the business. We provide our patients with top-notch care....and it shows. Our Director of Rehabilitation, Mo Pham, carries a full caseload of patients (just like our other therapists), as well as managing our department. She runs a tight ship and inspires us all to work hard to keep up with her boundless energy. Everyone on the unit knows “Mighty Mo.” She is an absolute dynamo and a world class Occupational Therapist. We have a large staff of Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, two Speech Language Pathologists, and two Rehab Aides. The unit is divided into three sections and overseen by our case manager therapists: Ruth Iiyama, PT (Physical Therapist) & Grace Manabat, OTR/L (Occupational Therapist - Registered/Licensed) Tammy Smith, PT, Beth Reynolds, PT, Catherine Schneider, PTA, & Lisa Carroll, OTR/L Chris Powell, PT, & Mo Pham, OTR/L Our COTA’s (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) and PTA’s (Physical Therapy Assistant), as well as our part-time licensed employees really keep things flowing smoothly and help our case managers to be efficient and effective. They work hard to be flexible and productive. We couldn’t ask for better, and we definitely could not do what we do without them! We can’t say “thank you” enough to these therapists to keep our unit going: COTA’s - Candy Diaz, Kristin Peters, & Mike Crenshaw OTR/L’s - Colleen Thomas & Chrystal Holley PT’s - Valerie Rust & Angie Reimer PTA’s - Chelsey Steirer, Kristi Schule & Karen Williams Rachel Hankins and Andrea Umayam, our spectacular Speech Therapists, work together to provide speech services six days a week. From swallow issues to medication management, they help our patients to have safe discharges and the best possible outcomes. We also have two RA’s (Rehab Aides) that keep the department organized, and see patients for exercise programs. They help with heavy patients, assist the nursing staff, and even break out the toolbox to work on our wheelchairs and other equipment when the need is there. Helen Skrabak, NAC (Nursing Assistant - Certified), and RA extraordinaire, is here at the crack of dawn to set things up for our therapists, collect data for insurance billing, carry out exercise programs - and anything else that needs to be done. She knows what we need before we even ask! Helen knows just about everything there is to know about our unit! Jennifer Lara, NAC, is our other Rehab Aide and administrative support person. She schedules therapy for all of our patients, tracks data for payment, keeps Mo organized, helps with staffing, and acts as our “Tech Guru” as we move into the paperless age! We really do have an amazing group here at the TCU Rehab Department. Our patients and local physicians think so too. We are so honored to be able to help our patients to get stronger and move on to the next chapter of their lives with dignity. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our community and help our neighbors. Some I attend regularly, and some I’ve never yet tried because I’ve been busy entertaining my visiting friends or tutoring my previous students. I DON’T know why Jesus didn’t take me Home when I hit the tree. I DO know that God’s Word promises me - and ALL who trust in Him - His peace and joy. Really. He does. I double checked... “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (NIV). Romans 15:13 Sherry Esp and Ken Hammond, Director of Development Someone Is ALWAYS Available For Me by Sherry Esp, Resident, Bethany at Pacific My name is Sherry Esp. My story is how God provided His peace and His joy through my tragedy. I lived alone in a secluded cottage. I had neighbors nearby with whom I prayed and socialized with, and sometimes depended on for help with things I couldn’t reach, lift, or clean because of my Multiple Sclerosis. I lived independently, taught Junior High English happily, and though I had to drive with hand controls, teach classes from a power chair, and use a scooter to shop and go to appointments, I competently solved the problems that came with worsening immobility....until October 23, 2013. Driving home from school that day, I swerved to miss on-coming traffic, rolled my SUV, and collided with a very large, very immoveable tree. The collision pushed my truck’s steering column into my chest. After looking at the x-ray, the emergency room doctor approached me in amazement. “You’re not broken,” he said. “I double checked.” I lost my SUV, my secluded cottage, and my career because of those few seconds. After a short hospital stay, I entered Bethany at Pacific. I had no idea the blessings the LORD had planned for me! Rod Vereb, Bethany’s Chaplain, offered biblical insight and practical advice. In addition to his leading weekly worship services, Bible studies, and song times, he visits with me and other residents often to offer a word of prayer or encouragement. Physical therapists come to my room almost daily. Because of God’s grace, their skill, and my perseverance, I’m now able to walk 400 feet with assistance on a walker. I have learned from the empathy of Bethany’s nurses and aides who so lovingly have cared for me and for others. I make mental notes and often pray that I would learn to respond to needs as they do. I don’t have to travel to the grocery store or prepare my own meals. I get menu choices, and the aides try valiantly to meet each resident’s dietary restrictions and preferences. I don’t have to clean the floors or take out the trash....my only “chore” is to be grateful to and for Bethany’s housekeeping staff members who do those things for me. Someone is always available if I need help with ANYTHING. It’s nice to have a tender, professional nurse nearby. It’s nice to have an aide coming to help me who has a unique skill set and a compassionate, generous heart. Did You Know? by Pastor Rod Vereb, Director of Pastoral Services Did you know that Bethany has 32 sponsoring Lutheran congregations in the greater Everett area? We are so blessed to have such wonderful support from our pastors and congregational members! During the year, I find myself visiting some 20 congregations on Sundays, speaking about Bethany, making sure that our partnership continues to be strong and vibrant. It is a great joy to meet and share ministry with so many pastors and congregations. We pray this new year will bring joy and love in our partnership together. Silver Lake Shows Their Colors by Karen Davis, Activities Director, Silver Lake Our men’s group at Silver Lake gets together every Tuesday. One of our volunteers, Jay Morris, is the program leader. He helped some of our men put the birdhouses together, and as dedicated Seahawk fans they decided to decorate them. In Seahawk colors! The birdhouses brighten up our courtyard too. Jay and his team received a request to make more of them for our south unit courtyard. They are excited for their new task! www.facebook.com/BethanyoftheNorthwest Bethany of the Northwest P.O. Assisted living residents do not require the assistance of a licensed nurse on a 24 hour basis. Per the State Regulation, they should be both “predictable and stable.” In other words, they are safe to be behind closed doors in their apartments and don’t need to be observed over extended periods. At the time of admission, a negotiated service plan is created. This plan would have a set of services delivered at a predetermined time. These might include such things as meals, toileting, dressing or medications. A resident’s needs may change throughout their stay, so it is important to review and update the service plan to reflect these changes. CEO — Denney Austin Bethany Senior Leadership Denney Austin Chief Executive Officer LeAnn Knipple Chief Financial Officer Debra James Administrator - Pacific Campus Mel Everett Administrator - Silver Lake & Silver Crest Barbara Haas Director of Human Resources Pastor Rod Vereb Director of Pastoral Care Ken Hammond Director of Development A vibrant activity schedule must be maintained to meet the psycho-social needs of this population. This would include outings and field trips which are both enjoyable and therapeutic. Most residents living in an assisted living community participate at some level in these activities which adds to their quality of life. Assisted living is a State program, in contrast to nursing homes where it is both a State and Federal program. An annual inspection is conducted by State Surveyors in every licensed assisted living community. Regulations are unique to both nursing homes and assisted living communities. These inspections usually last from three to five days by a team of surveyors. Please join me in congratulating Mel Everett, Administrator, Heidi Niswanger, Community Manager, and Pam Baudry, Health Services Director, for receiving a “Zero Deficiency” inspection recently at Bethany at Silver Crest. We are blessed to have these individuals as part of the Bethany Team. Denney Austin CEO, Bethany of the Northwest
