I utilize math in all of my courses and without proper training as an undergraduate, I would not be able to continue a career in economics”. - Jo Full time faculty Bob Hegarty Professor of Mathematics and Physics Ph.D. University of Notre Dame ‘73 Keith Brandt Professor of Mathematics Ph.D. University of Wisconsin ‘92 Paula Shorter Associate Professor of Mathematics Ph.D. University of Virginia ‘96 Nancy Donaldson (Chair) Associate Professor of Physics Ph.D. University of Missouri Kansas City ‘04 Zdeňka Guadarrama Assistant Professor of Mathematics Ph.D. University of Arkansas ‘06 Mairead Greene Assistant Professor of Mathematics Ph.D. University of Massachusetts ‘07 Physics Mathematics An understanding of physical phenomena is essential in all fields of science, medicine, engineering and technology. The basic theories of physics provide a way of perceiving the natural world, and the ultimate objective of the study of physics is to provide the student with a way to appreciate the world with greater understanding. The mathematics program at Rockhurst University provides a set of courses ranging from theoretical to the applied to meet the professional and graduate school needs of mathematics majors. The mathematics program is also committed to providing relevant and practical mathematics courses to satisfy the University's proficiency requirement and to support coursework in other disciplines. Rockhurst offers two tracks in physics (Traditional Major/Minor or Physics of Medicine Program) to prepare students for graduate school/career paths in physics, engineering, medicine, law or business. The Physics of Medicine (POM) program offers both a Medical Physics Major Track and a Physics of Medicine Minor. POM is designed to deepen students' understanding of physics principles and the applicability of those principles to medicine and the health care field. It provides excellent preparation for graduate study in Medicine, Medical Physics or graduate therapy programs. There are many career paths open to students graduating with a degree in mathematics. Some of the fields that students may choose upon graduation are: teaching and theoretical research in mathematics; scientific work; theoretical computer science work; business problemsolving through operations research; and management of risks through actuarial work. Melissa Ruhlman ‘08 Math and Chemistry major Now in Medical School at St. Louis University Christopher Shaver ’09, Math, Business and Theology major. Chris taught for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Denver, CO. He is currently working on a Ph.D.in Mathematics at St. Louis University. “Whether through specific courses, summer research projects, or the student-run Math & Physics Club, the Math and Physics department offered me multiple ways to become a more engaged and interested student, helping me to ultimately learn not only about math, but about myself”. -Chris Katelyn Carr ’10 Math major, Spanish and Biology minors Now in Pharmacy School at the University of Kansas Melissa Hager ‘11 Biology and Spanish major and a POM minor. Now in medical school at KCUMB "Discovery consists in seeing what everyone else has seen but understanding it for the first time." - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi “I can confidently say that having a more in-depth understanding of physics as it pertains to the human body and to medicine will definitely give me a head start as I begin medical school in the fall.” - Melissa
