The Self Study Report for the third cycle of Assessment and Accreditation by
NAAC was uploaded on our college website www.mesinstitutions.org.in/mesdegree
on 28th December 2014. The hard copies were submitted to NAAC on 24th January
2015.
The classes for even semesters of the undergraduate programmes leading to
B.A, B.Sc and B.Com degrees commenced on 2nd January 2015. The even semester
for UG was for the period 2nd January 2015 to 30th April 2015. The classes for even
semesters of the Postgraduate programmes M.Sc (Mathematics) and M.A (Kannada)
were held between February 2015 and May 2015. Even semesters are generally
packed with programmes and activities as it is the latter half of the academic year.
Further, the focus will primarily be on the final year UG and PG students as they will
be passing out of the portals of the college and aspiring to find good placements as
well as admission in Institutes of repute to continue their higher studies. As in the
previous semesters, this semester too was packed with several activities and
programmes conducted by various departments.
The college reopened for the odd semesters on June 26th 2015. The even
semester term closed on 18th October 2015 with university practical examinations
commencing from 13th October 2015 and theory examinations from 6th November
2015 (PG department odd July 2015 – December 2015).
The following is the supplementary report covering the activities of our
institution from January 2015 to December 2015.

Suraj Rajashekar student of 2nd BSc completed a SPICE VGST project
titled “Phosphors to brighten our future – A novel method preparation of
doped BaAl2O4 TLD material”, under the guidance of Prof. K. M.
Raghavendran, Dept. of Physics – submitted January 2015.
Suraj Rajashekar of 2nd BSc and Prof K. M. Raghavendran Dept. of Physics
presented a poster titled “Barium Aluminate for Thermo luminescence
comparative studies” at the UGC sponsored national conference on
Atomic, Molecular physics and x-ray crystallography at Vijaya College,
Bangalore on 8th January 2015.
Miss N. Meghana of 2nd B.Sc completed a projects entitled “Optical
waveguides and Optical Modulators” during May-July 2015 as a Summer
Research Fellow programme sponsored by Indian Academy of Science
Bengaluru, Indian National Science Academy New Delhi and The National
Academy of Sciences, Allahabad.
Prof. K. M. Raghavendran participated in a two-day workshop on
Computer-Aided Physics Experiment with ExpEYES at Karnataka

Prof. Nalini Bai
(a) Prof. Nalini Bai attended the7th national women‟s science congress
organized (Rashtriya Mahila, Vijnaya Sammelana) by Karnataka state
women‟s University and Matru Vedike (women‟s scientists‟ forum) at
Bijapur on 7th and 8th November 2014. She also presented a paper in the
conference titled “On Ant mimicking Salticid and Thomicid Spiders” at
I.I.Sc, Bangalore.
(b) Attended the lecture workshop organized by the dept. of life sciences
(Botany/Zoology) of MES ACS on 14th /15th February 2015 on “Insights
from Evolutionary Biology”
(c) She has successfully guided students of 3rd year B.Sc Mr Afshan Izzath.M,
Miss Swathi.S, Miss Keerthi and Mr Suraj R.C to complete the project
“Study of spider diversity in butterfly park of Bannerghatta National park,
Bangalore, India”. A paper on this project has been accepted for
presentation at the international conference on Agriculture, Veterinary and
Environmental Sciences -2015 to be held on July 24th /25th 2015 at
International Multidisciplinary research foundation (IMRF) Vijayawada,
Andhra Pradesh.
(d) She has a publication in Life sciences international research journal
(ISSN,2347-8692) in Vol 2 issue 2 titled “Feeding Habits in Spider Hesilia
Savignyi”
(e) Prof. Nalini Bai G attended a two-day International Conference On
Agriculture, Veterinary & Environmental Sciences on 24th -25th July
2015 organized by International Multidisciplinary Research Foundation,
Vijayawada & presented a paper on “Spider diversity in Butterfly park of
Bannerghatta National Park, Bangalore” also had the same published in
the Life Science International Research Journal IMRF, vol – 2, issue – 2,

communication technology” at Goa on 26th and 27th November 2015. The
Paper was adjudged the Best paper in the conference.

Dr R.V.Sheela was a Resource person for a special lecture on Language and
Literature conducted for High School teachers by Maruti Vidyalaya (ICSC).

A one-day Orientation Programme was arranged by the Library in association
with the Computer Science department on InFlinbNet and E-courses to Staff

Institution has NSS and NCC wings, RED Cross Unit through which it does a
lot of socially responsible activities.

The following are the activities to promote institution-neighbourhoodcommunity network and student engagement.
1. A seven-day annual camp was organised for the NSS volunteers at
Bylakere a Village in Nelamangala taluk in Bangalore rural district during
January 2015. 110 volunteers participated.

Several activities were undertaken and services rendered by the volunteers.
Some of these include
(i) Cleaning the village streets, premises of the school and surroundings of
five temples.
(ii) House to house visits to create awareness about the importance of
(a) Education of the girl child (b) health and hygiene.
(iii) Washing and cleaning the 10 Shiva idols on top of the temple
(iv) The highlight of the camp was the legal awareness campaign conducted
by Ms. Rekha Nayak and Ms. Vidya, faculty members on elating Adhaar
Card, land records, old age pensions, birth, marriage and death Certificates
etc. This was very well received by the villagers.
2. A blood donation camp was organized by NSS on 4th March 2015. 139
units of blood was collected and given to Blood bank.

3. NSS volunteers lent a helping hand in laying the steps at Siddalagatta,
hillock near Tumakuru to help the people have an easy access to a temple
on top of the hillock.

1. A one-day service camp was organised a Kannur Village which is about 70
km from Bangalore on 8thFebruary 2015. NSS volunteers dug about 150 pits
for saplings to be planted.
2. The NSS volunteers along with the “Eco warrior Corps” of our college and
the students of Maharani‟s Science College and Soundarya College planted
about 650 saplings in Kannur Village on 1st March 2015.

National Cadet Corps (NCC-Boys)
There were several activities conducted by the 1 Karnataka Armoured SQN,
NCC the boys wing of NCC during the period January 2015-October 2015.
1. Republic Day was celebrated with Parade and cultural programme. Mrs
Suhasini Vasanth, wife of Late Col.Vasanth, AC (posthumous) donated a
bust of her husband who was an outstanding NCC cadet of our college.
2. 35 NCC Cadets accompanied by the NCC officer Lt. Arun Kumar and two
other faculty members and two PI staff went on a 4-day cycle expedition
from Bengaluru to K.G.F Kolar covering a distance of 250 km on 4th, 5th
and 6th January 2015 spreading the message of cleanliness as part of the
Prime Minister‟s Swach Bharath Abhiyan Programme. The expedition
was flagged off by the Honorable Governor of Karnataka Sri Vaju Bhai
Wala.
H.E. Sri Vaju Bhai Wala Governor of Karnataka Flagging of the Cycle Expedition along
with Smt.Vimala Rangachar, President, Sri. Seshadri Iyengar, Vice President MES and
Dr. Shakuntala Katre, Secretary (Academics) of MES Institutions.
3. Camps Attended

Lt. Arun Kumar attended the refresher Course at Officer Training Centre
for NCC at Kamtee, Nagpur from 30th March to 28th April 2015.

Two cadets attended the National integration camp at Mysore during
May2015.

Two Cadets and Lt.Arun Kumar attended the Basic Leadership Camp
(BLC) at Mysore from June 30th to July 10th 2015.

In the 5 Sthal Sainik Camps (TLC) held during June–July 2015 at
Doddaballapur, Kolar, Hoskote 25 Cadets participated.
4. International Yoga Day
As part of the International day celebrations on 22nd June 2015, 100 cadets
of our College participated in the Yoga demonstration at Central College
Cricket Ground.
The college organized a 15 day training programme for these cadets.

The following MoUs were signed.
1. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Dr. M.
Satyakrishna, Principal and Head of the Department of Mathematics and
Mr. Arvind of NICT Computer Education, on 1st October 2015, for the
Add-on Course in Basic Mathematics, which will be conducted in
December 2015.
2. The department of Zoology has signed a MoU with “M/S ABIVRUD
Health Care Pvt Ltd”, Srirampuram, Bangalore-21 for research related to
Colorectal Cancer under VGST program on 29-6-2015 for a period of 5
years. Prof. Sheela Menon and Prof. Tulasipathi Naidu are the coordinators. The students of 2nd and 3rd year (CBZ/CZBT) will be involved
in the research work.
3. The department of Zoology has signed a MoU with Durga Femto
Technologies, Bengaluru – for 10 years for student research in the area of
UV blocker properties of silver Nano particles extracted from plants
4. The Department of Commerce has signed an MoU with Ms Shri Stock
Market to conduct a certificate course on “Stock market technical
analysis”.
5. MES Degree College of ACS signed a MoU with Samvit Academy
Synergy for CA, CS and allied courses.

The IQAC has identified several repairs and renovation in consultations with
the different departments and sought the permission of the management and
Governing Body for the sanction of funds for these projects on a top priority
basis. The management has sanctioned several of these projects. The notable
recommendations of the IQAC which have been taken up by the management
to upgrade and enhance Infrastructure and learning resources during the year
2014-2015 and were completed during the last six months are listed below.

distribute the degree certificates to all graduates, UG and PG as well honor

quality assurance procedures. The IQAC has been actively involved in NAAC
preparations for the past one year. In addition to identifying the infrastructure
needs of the college and overseeing its implementation, several other activities
have been conducted and coordinated by it. These activities are designed to
help create awareness about ensuing NAAC peer team visit among the
different stake holders as well as prepare them for the ensuing visit.
1. IQAC organized the Counselling of students for admission to B.A and
B.Sc. Banners were put up at strategic locations and faculty members of
Humanities, Languages, Biological and Physical sciences were assigned
counselling work. The guidelines for counselling was formulated and
followed. Due to the excellent work done by the faculty members the
number of students admitted to B.Sc and B.A is excellent compared to
other affiliated colleges in the city.

7. A Session on preparation for NAAC peer team visit was organized by
IQAC for all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. Dr. R.C.
Hiremath, Principal, KLE Society’s S. Nijalingappa College who has been
on several peer teams to A &A degree college was invited to give a
presentation on 31st July 2015.
8. The IQAC has prepared a Quality Manual which will serve as a handbook
for all processes in the college. It is hoped to adopt the Manual from the
next academic year.
9. Prof K.M.Raghavendran, IQAC coordinator attended a two day National
Summit on Quality in Education” Attaining Institutional Excellence
through Teacher Empowerment” organised by CII Institute on quality on
22nd and 23rd September 2015.
10. Prof K. M. Raghavendran, IQAC coordinator, Dr. Veena Nagaraj, IQAC
member and Dr. J. Vishwanath, NAAC coordinator, attended a two day
NAAC sponsored National Conference on” Quality Initiatives &
Benchmarking in Higher Educational Institutions” organised by Surana
College Bangalore on 3rd and 4th September 2015.
11. The IQAC organised an Interactive workshop to sensitize students on the
impact of “retail Corruption” in association with Janaagraha on 27th August
2015. The Speakers included (1) Dr. Malathi Das, I.A.S (Retd), Former
Chief Secretary of Government of Karnataka (2) Dr. S.T. Ramesh, I.P.S
(Retd) Former DG & IG of Police of Karnataka, Sri Srikumar, I.P.S (Retd)
Former DG & IG of Police Karnataka and Central Vigilance
Commissioner, (4) Sri. Rajat Shubhro, Senior Associate Jana online(I Paid
a Bribe Initiative) and Mrs Swathi Ramanathan activist Janaagraha. The
programme was very well received by the students and the staff.
12.The IQAC conducted a one day orientation and training programme on
firefighting and use of fire extinguisher for non-teaching support staff of
the college. on 18/11/15.Sri Satyanarayana an alumnus and trained
firefighter and fire warden conducted the training. 25 support staff
members and five faculty enthusiastically participated in the program.

IQAC conducted an Academic audit of the departments by eliciting responses
to a detailed questionnaire. The questionnaire was framed by IQAC.

What are the initiatives taken by the college to make the campus ecofriendly ?
Use of renewable energy:
Plant foliage and organic debris are utilized for the preparation of
bio-fertilizers.
Water harvesting system:
Installation of improved roof water harvesting system.
Water recycling.
e-waste management :
Maintenance of e-waste bins at strategic places.
Separate disposal of e-waste is periodically done.

Innovations
7.2.1
Give details of innovations introduced during the last four years which
have created a positive impact on the functioning of the college.
Under the initiative of Dr. Leelavathi D of Botany department, 10 students
of B.Sc (CBZ) have adopted plants. The students regularly water the plants,
prune then and take care of them.

In Botany department plants are grown in waste containers such as coconut
shells, plastic bottles. Students are informed about the role of plants in the
ecosystem.
