The curriculum layout is designed to be used over multiple years and incorporates the engineering design process by encouraging students to improve upon collaborative projects year after year. Several of the units provide the opportunity for students to engage in new projects by grade level. Many of the units also have lessons that extend to lower grades. The “STEM Discovery Camp” is designed for 24 students to work on the same unit at the same time. The other units will be used as rotating stations, aligned with the layout of the STEM lab (computers on the back wall). Furthermore, the middle school teachers have identified several of the cross-curricular standards, including religion, social studies, language arts, music and the arts. We will continue add to the list as the students progress through the units. MS-ETS1 Engineering Design This is a handheld tool that students use to build 3d designs looking at the thermal energy transfer from the pen to the synthetic material. This can be used to create any 3D item relating to the four themes. Theme Relation Students using Animation Studio will be asked to create different stop animation that will be related to not only the theme for the year but correlated to any of the core standards. MS ES, MS LS, MS PS, This kit is designed to cover all science standards. It has 60 individual projects that correspond to all aspects of STEM. See this site for examples of curriculum. http://www.stemfinity.com/Discover-STEM-Summer-Camp Theme Relation This resource has so many different activities that relate to each theme and are cross curricular to all aspects of core learning. Ex: Complex societies students will create a story that looks at the interactions of whales and their complexity of breeding grounds, vocal interaction etc.. They will then create a report and deliver it via stop animation. For example, students will research a planet and create a civilization on that planet. That civilization will need to include but not limited to, government, religion, housing structures, sustainability, background props, impact on the planet etc. Students will need to produce and act out their screenplay. 7.NS.1 Numbers Systems 5.NBT.1 Number & Operations 7.EE.1 Expressions & Equations 5.MD. 1 Measurement and Data 7.G Solve real-world problems involving area, surface area, and Ratios and Proportions 7.SP.1 Statistics and Probability Functions 7.NS.1 Numbers Systems 5.NBT.1 Number & Operations in Base Ten 7.EE.1 Expressions & Equations 5.MD. 1 Measurement and Data 7.G Solve real-world problems involving area, surface area, and Ratios and Proportions 7.SP.1 Statistics and Probability Functions Little Bits Space Kit (C) (M) http://www.stemfinity.com/littleBits/littleBit s-Space-Kit Theme Relation Little Bits Deluxe Kit (C) (M) http://www.stemfinity.com/littleBits/littleBits-DeluxeKit Theme Relation This kit fits into all four themes in different ways, in Exploration, we will use it to explore space, Growth, we will look at the growth of the universe, the This kit is exploratory in nature. STEM Curriculum growth of the space program etc. in Complex Societies we will use this kit to explore creating societies on other planets, and for Survival, we will look at surviving in space and what it takes to live on a planet other than Earth, or in space stations. through the years. Students will be able to eventually see how circuits allow for us to live in a complex and developed world. The middle school already has a comprehensive science curriculum, Science Explorer, Prentice Hall. Supplemental materials take STEM to a higher level. Supplemental materials have been selected with care to incorporate STEM into our entire curriculum, not just the science curriculum. In the middle school students will experience STEM from a point-of-view unique to the higher grades. Students will not experience it as a stand-alone lesson or unit—it is integrated across the entire curriculum. These STEM materials give students the skills to focus on any of the major grade-level themes, while learning the integral skills that it takes to work in the 21st C. By learning through these activities our students will gain an understanding of not only the learning goal, but what it is like in the workplace—real-world applications/problems. These tasks allow students to identify real-world problems and come up with innovative solutions. This will prepare students for the 21st century workplace. In the STEM lab students learn to work together. Sometimes students are placed in mentoring groups where the older students are working with the younger ones teaching them how to complete a task. STEM Curriculum Other times students are working with classmates on a given task. All of these activities prepare students for the workplace where they will be given tasks that require them to work with various people in collaboration. While in the STEM Lab students will be given a center with at least one other peer. Students will be given a task that will have various assignments connected to the task. Students will then have a specified amount of time to complete the task. Students will have a calendar that they will create with dates to turn-in various stages of the given assignment. Once the assignment is completed students will be responsible for turning in a report documenting the progress of their work for the kit or activity. Once this report is complete all students will be assigned to a new kit or activity. One student will move on to the next activity/kit while another students stays back to teach the next group coming up. Once all groups have been taught the next activity, they will rejoin their peer group and begin the new task or activity.
