SEAP is designed so that students can apprentice in fields of their choice with experienced scientists and engineers. This opportunity provides students with valuable experience needed to make informed career decisions. Students apprentice with their mentors on mutually agreed upon projects. At Army Research facilities, the students apprentice in a professional research laboratory setting and learn how their research can benefit the Army as well as the civilian community. Because of the setting, students are treated as research assistants rather than just teenagers. First year participants are awarded an educational stipend of $2000. The students contribute to the research of the laboratory while learning research techniques in the process. This "hands-on" experience gives students a broader view of their fields of interest and shows students what kind of work awaits them in their future career. The students also attend demonstrations and go on field trips to learn more about the inner workings of an Army Research Laboratory. At the end of the summer, the students prepare final reports and present their research at a final seminar. http://www.usaeop.com/programs/SEAP/index.htm RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES B.U. Research Internship Spend six weeks this summer conducting university-level research in state-of-the-art laboratories, alongside some of the sharpest scientific minds in the country http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/research-internship/ FREE RESEARCH SCIENCE INSTITUTE: The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) co-sponsor the Research Science Institute (RSI) and are looking for talented 11th Grade STEM Students! Do you know any students who want to work on really exciting cutting-edge summer research? Have them apply to the (RSI) program to be held on the MIT campus June 22 to August 2, 2014. They will meet some of the world's most talented students and top scientists and have an opportunity to conduct research in amazing labs! The program is free to students except for travel to and from MIT. If you know any current high school juniors, have them take a look at the CEE website or RSI application materials, and more information about the program. www.cee.org If you have any interested students, please contact Maite Ballestero, Vice President, Programs, maite@cee.org. There is still time for consideration. PROGRAMS IN ENGINEERING/TECHNOLOGY FREE TOPS High School Physics Program at MIT- The TOPS Physics Workshop is a two-week program for high school students interested in science who are currently freshmen and sophomores. Participants will explore the physics of heat, energy, and light through hands-on activities and lessons taught by undergraduate physics students. They will also learn about research in the CUA and see how elementary principles of physics are manifested in frontier research. This program is offered free-of-charge and will take place at the Center for Ultracold Atoms at MIT in Cambridge. http://cuaweb.mit.edu/Pages/TopsSection/ActivitiesAndSchedule.aspx?TopsSectionId=6 iDTech at Bentley-commuting and residential Classes in programming, game design, film production and animation. Students enroll in one of two tracks: electrical engineering and computer science or mechanical engineering. The program is designed specifically for girls who have excelled in math and science but who have very little or no prior background in engineering or computer science. Both tracks feature intensive classroom sessions, projects, guest speakers, and lab tours and field trips. http://www.collegexpress.com/summer-programs/massachusetts-institute-of-technology-wome n39s-technology-program/3518/ University of Rhode Island-Engineering program http://www.uri.edu/uritc/outreach_programs/engineering_academy.shtml U.Conn School of Engineering Programs http://www.engr.uconn.edu/engineering2000.php Olin College of ENGINEERING -scroll down to see the dates for Olin College in Needham National Youth Leadership Forum: Careers in Engineering & Technology, an Envision Program, offers you real-world experiences in a wide range of applied engineering and technology fields and applications. Each July, select high school students from across the country and abroad come to Smith College to do hands-on research with Smith faculty in the life and physical sciences and in engineering. http://www.smith.edu/summer/programs_ssep.php Engineering Programs in the Northeast: http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/engineering.asp?sort=programs&subsort=region&subsubsor t=Northeast PROGRAMS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE/MARINE BIOLOGY Field Studies for a Sustainable Future at Smith College http://www.smith.edu/summer/programs_sustainability.php You will be a part of a small community of students interested in moving beyond "green" toward understanding what will be necessary to achieve a truly sustainable future and ensure life on Earth. Much of our explorations will take place outside in the field, as we consider sustainable practices that affect our bodies and landscapes. Learning and living together with a group of equally concerned and engaged people, you will explore how the spaces where we live, work and play can be designed to improve rather than denigrate the environment.
