Philharmonia Season
2011/12
Welcome to the Philharmonia Orchestra’s fifteenth season in residence at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.
As always we’re proud to bring a varied programme featuring the very best of today’s artists.
The season opens with an Opera Gala evening with Sir John Tomlinson, one of the world’s leading
operatic basses. There are concerts featuring two of the Orchestra’s titled conductors: Esa-Pekka
Salonen, Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, conducts Beethoven’s Eroica, and Christoph von
Dohnányi, Honorary Conductor for Life, conducts an evening of Richard Strauss. We also have a
Philharmonia conducting début for 29-year-old Han-Na Chang, a protégée of Lorin Maazel, who
conducts a programme featuring prominent works from Spain and America, alongside a performance
of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez by renowned guitarist Craig Ogden. The Philharmonia collaborates
with Leicester Philharmonic Choir for a performance of Handel’s Messiah. To complete the season,
one of the recently established names of the British conducting world, Edward Gardner, conducts
Janácek’s
monumental Sinfonietta.
ˇ
The Philharmonia’s commitment to working with Leicester’s wider communities remains an integral
part of the Residency and this Season sees the launch of a major new education initiative. Orchestra
Unwrapped will over the coming four years give every Key Stage 2 primary school child in Leicester
the opportunity to hear live the Philharmonia Orchestra at De Montfort Hall, alongside an extensive
programme of teacher training and digital resources to ensure the Philharmonia reaches every primary
school classroom in Leicester. Find out more and how you can play your part in this project on Page 10.

An evening dedicated almost entirely to one of the composers
most championed by Christoph von Dohnányi during his
distinguished musical career: the last great German Romantic
composer, Richard Strauss. The programme spans more
than 60 years of Strauss’s compositional life and is framed by
two sparkling miniature musical pen portraits – the flamboyant
Don Juan, his first tone poem, which set the musical world on
fire in 1888, and the nimble and witty Till Eulenspiegel,
chronicling its eponymous hero’s ‘merry pranks’. In between,
a different Strauss altogether is heard in the sublime and
deeply moving Four Last Songs: an autumnal, eloquent and
honest meditation on the end of life – a piece which the
Philharmonia premièred in 1950.

HANDEL Messiah
Far and away, Handel’s Messiah is the most celebrated of all
his oratorios, and holds a uniquely-admired position among
all choral literature. Completed in just 24 days, and following
a career writing for the operatic stage, Messiah marked a new
period for Handel which eventually proved to be his most
lucrative. The result is a blend of the best baroque styles and
colours: part German passion, part English anthem, part Italian
opera. There is a plethora of beautiful and varied arias from the
grandiose ‘He was despised’ to the more simple lyricism of ‘How
beautiful are the feet’. Of course, this is not to forget the glorious,
if infamous, ‘Hallelujah’ Chorus. Of particular relevance to the
local area, it should be noted that Messiah was reputedly written
while Handel stayed at Gopsall Hall, North-West Leicestershire.

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3, Eroica
Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor
and Artistic Advisor, returns to De Montfort Hall for a
programme featuring Beethoven’s Eroica. For some, this is
considered the greatest symphony ever written, creating
the foundations of Romanticism on the part of its
unprecedented scale, gestures and depth of expression.
The context in which the symphony was written reflects the
work’s raw passion. On hearing that Napoleon had crowned
himself emperor (the symphony’s original dedicatee),
Beethoven famously tore the title page in half, scored out
the offending name, and re-dedicated it to Prince Lobkowitz.
In the first half, Schumann's supremely eloquent Piano
Concerto is performed by Antti Siirala – an intimate
dialogue between piano and orchestra.
Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, suffused with a Mediterranean
spirit, is played in this concert by one of the world’s finest
classical guitarists, Australian-born Craig Ogden.
A different Spanish flavour comes in de Falla’s
Three-Cornered Hat Suites, from a ballet depicting an
elderly local magistrate’s failed attempt to
seduce the miller’s lovely wife. From Spain
we then move to the States, featuring
three central, yet distinctive,
American composers of
the 1930s. Barber is
represented with
his serenely beautiful
Adagio; Ives by his
existential The Unanswered Question; and Gershwin
by his contemporarily urban An American in Paris,
complete with car horns.

Each miniature depicts a new scene, gradually covering a patchwork of contrasting episodes, linked by the recurring theme (the

Before this, the introduction to one of his last great projects,
an historical opera which he did not finish (but Rimsky-Korsakov
