JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: Learning Support Assistant for Language (ESOL) and Literacy or Numeracy (LLN) Term-Time only (38 wks per year), 35 hours per week POST NO: GRADE: Scale 3 pro-rata REPORTING TO: Programme Managers LLN /Head of School PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS: Students Skills for life Cluster Leaders Lecturers – LLN and vocational/academic Tutors Student Support Services staff Administrative Staff External Agencies Purpose of the Post: To work as a member of the Language ( ESOL), Literacy and Numeracy [LLN] team providing effective support to students to develop their LLN skills on college programmes To support the improvement of language skills of the majority of learners across college To support individuals and groups of students in class, out of class and in the Study Skills Centre To perform administrative and pastoral duties associated with supporting learners’ needs. To work with the LLN team, lecturers and assessors in identifying LLN support needs of students through initial assessment and diagnostic activities 2. To plan appropriate support for identified learner/s with the lecturer prior to the teaching session and to assist in organising equipment and materials where necessary. 3. Under the direction of the lecturer and LLN team, to assist learners in the development of their LLN skills in classroom and workshop activities. 4. To support students in developing their LLN skills in small groups and individually within and outside the classroom/workshop, and in the workplace if appropriate 5. To report to the LLN Team Leader and tutors any concerns regarding learners’ progress. 6. To assist in setting targets and recording the progress of individual learners. 7. To communicate when necessary with parents/carers on the progress of young learners. 8. To help create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment for learning, including promotion of good attendance and punctuality. 9. Experience of working with young people or adults in supporting their development of Language ( ESOL), Literacy or Numeracy skills 2. Qualification in supporting learning at Level 3 or above, or willingness to gain qualification 3. Educated to A level/Level 3 standard or equivalent, with Literacy and Numeracy [English/Maths at level 2]. 4. Experience of planning learning and producing learning resources Knowledge, Skills & Understanding: 1. The ability to support and develop Language (ESOL), Literacy or Numeracy skills of learners in small groups and individually 2. The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with staff, students, parents/carers and outside agencies. 3. The ability to supervise students either on an individual basis or in groups and to maintain a calm atmosphere. 4. Ability to identify LLN support needs using initial screening and diagnostic tools 5. Ability to work as a member of a team and to collaborate with lecturing staff 6.
