The Importance of Flaggers
Motorists need flaggers to provide guidance and direction.
Pedestrians rely on flaggers, especially those who are impaired.
Many children and bicyclists pass through work zones and need the guidance of flaggers.
Because flaggers are responsible for public safety and
make the greatest number of contacts with the public of
all highway workers, they should be trained in safe
traffic control practices and public contact techniques.
Flaggers should be able to satisfactorily demonstrate
the following abilities:
Ability to receive and communicate specific
instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously;
Ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to
avoid danger from errant vehicles;
Ability to control signaling devices (such as
paddles and flags) in order to provide clear and
positive guidance to drivers approaching a TTC
zone in frequently changing situations;
Ability to understand and apply safe traffic
control practices, sometimes in stressful or
emergency situations; and
Ability to recognize dangerous traffic situations
and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid
injury.

be aware of all state and federal requirements of flagger

Pavement Marking
1 gallon of traffic paint yields approximately 450 linear feet of 4” stripe or 150 sq. ft.
1 ton of thermoplastic yields approximately 3,575 linear feet of 6” stripe.
You should allow approximately 10 pounds of glass beads per gallon of paint.
You can install approximately 50 four inch markers or traffic buttons per gallon of epoxy.
You can install approximately 5 four inch markers or traffic buttons per pound of bitumen.
You will use approximately 6 to 8 pounds of beads per gallon of latex traffic paint.
You will use approximately 10 to 12 pounds of beads per 100 sq. ft. of thermoplastic.
Temporary Traffic Control
The spacing of channelizing devices should not exceed a distance in feet equal to 1.0
times the speed limit when used in tapers and a distance in feet equal to 2.0 times the
speed limit when used in the tangents.
It should be predicted at the time of set up how a channelizing device will react when
struck by a vehicle at the posted speed.
Pedestrian channelizers shall have no gaps at the bases and be at least 36” high.
To be effective, a traffic control device should meet five basic requirements:
A. Fulfill a need;
B. Command attention;
C. Convey a clear, simple meaning;
D. Command respect from road users; and
E. Give adequate time for proper response.

Removal: The key to success in stripe (traffic markings) removal
is to remove the thermoplastic or paint used in street markings
from the asphalt without causing excessive damage to the
asphalt or concrete. Thermoplastic line removal is the most
difficult because these lines are nearly as hard - and in some
cases harder - than the underlying asphalt. Adding to the difficulty
of such projects is the fact that asphalt is very porous and the
stripes penetrate into the surface pores. This is why grinders (the
most popular alternative) are so ineffective for thermoplastic line
removal. To remove traffic lines using grinders, workers must tear
up the asphalt to the lowest level of paint penetration, usually
about 1/4" - 1/2". However, the unique water blasting system can
quickly eliminate thermoplastic and paint stripes while causing
minimal damage to the underlying surface.
Regardless of what your marking removal needs will be, or
how difficult they are to access, the blasting head options will
very likely be able to do the job. Examples of applications
where the water blasting system is easily adapted with
outstanding results include:

full service airfield markings. The services include markings for
runways, taxiways, service roads, and all necessary gate and
GSE markings. All materials used are FAA specified and applied.
All equipment used is the latest available to help prevent lengthy
shut down times of areas that are important to keep airport
traffic running smoothly.
Stripes & Stops makes quick work of
airfield taxiway markings including the
enhanced taxiway centerline markings
consisting of a parallel line of yellow
dashes on either side of the taxiway
centerline.
Taxiway centerlines
are
enhanced for 150 feet (45.7 m) prior to a
runway holding position marking. The
enhanced taxiway centerline is standard
at all Federal Aviation regulated airports.
There is no better method for removing airfield
markings than Ultra High Pressure waterblasting. It is
much faster than alternative methods, drastically
reducing the time that the active areas need to be shut
down. Because waterblasting is dust free, it is the low
impact environmental alternative.
