taff, visitors, and residents voiced positive comments
complimenting the appearance and effect of the new
fireplace. When considering the construction of the
fireplace, we viewed it as an opportunity to enhance our facility’s
front entrance to create a warm, home-like environment that
provides comfort and support to the people we care for.

Employees, Residents, Families and Community
Join in a Fund Raiser to Help an Employee…
efore the Holiday season, Laurel Somrude LPN, a day shift nurse on one of our
Rehab units, sustained an injury requiring a lengthy hospitalization and a slow
recovery period. Laurel is a single mother of 3 small children; she has been off
work for approximately 6 months. Needless to say, bills have mounted quickly. LindenGrove
employees collaborated to express our support and compassion by hosting a facility-wide
fundraiser to assist Laurel with the offset of
medical expenses and hopefully reduce her stress.
B
All departments rallied to create 19 various
themed baskets to “RAFFLE OFF” and hopefully
present Laurel with a substantial monetary
donation. Enthusiastically, employees
demonstrated their support of Laurel by
participating in the donation of items to create a
basket, purchasing raffle tickets, or making a
monetary donation.
The baskets were on display from Monday, April 4th
through Wednesday, April 20th in the lobby entrance at the
Menomonee Falls facility. This allowed LindenGrove
residents, family members, employees and community
visitors to be engaged in the fund raiser.
Just in time for Easter, 19 winning tickets were drawn
on Wednesday, April 20th. A substantial amount of money
was raised to assist Laurel. All employees, residents and
their families wished Laurel a speedy recovery. Laurel’s
plan is to return to her friends, and co-workers, and
residents the beginning of May. She expressed her
gratitude and was very appreciative to all of those
individuals who helped make her life a “little easier.”
Irish Dancers Clogging up a Storm
T
o celebrate the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, the Cashel
Dennehey Irish dancers performed for residents and
family members on Saturday, March 19. The room
was filled to capacity with on-lookers as four different groups of
dancers performed their specialty dances. There was a group of
first-year dancers, two intermediate groups and a championship
team that was going to Ireland to compete. Observers were
impressed with the dancing as well as the colorful ornate
costumes. Following the performance, the dancers visited with
the guests and shared the history of the dancers’ costumes.

career in a hospital setting. In February,
2000, she decided to place her emphasis in a Long
Term Care facility. Starting as a day shift staff nurse

Falls. In August 2004, she was promoted to the
position of RN Manager. Several of Jaime’s qualities
are maintaining a calm, assertive approach, possessing
a comprehensive clinical experience, demonstrating
knowledge of high standards of practice, and a strong
commitment to customer service.
A
In her new role, her philosophy of practice is to
“attempt to strengthen the team as a whole using a less
reactive and more proactive approach.” All this is
accomplished with a sense of pride and humor.
On a personal note, Jaime is very family-oriented.
She and her husband Tim, along with their two
children Jacob and Julia, enjoy various outdoor sports,
especially camping and being involved with their
children’s school and activities.
The employees look forward to working with
Jaime. Her philosophy, experience and practical
approach will compliment the staff’s commitment to
enhance the residents health status and psychosocial
well-being, employee morale, and facility image.

Pancake Race
indenGrove’s annual pancake race was held March 11th. The pancake race
is an annual tradition in recognition of Lent. It is past custom that families
would have large meals for days prior to Lent serving all the sugar and
flour in the house in the form of waffles, pancakes or donuts! This is to rid the house
of the decadent heavy baked goods we eat and we
often give up for Lent. Having a pancake race has
been just one of those traditions that has formed out
of this tradition.
L
During our pancake race we have three teams of 6
residents including their assisting staff member. It all
starts with the staff member assisting the elder to get
ready for the race! First the staff member helps place
the chef’s hat on the resident’s head, then the apron Volunteer, former employee and pancake race
and oven mitt! The resident intern picks up a

Men’s Club Meets the Cub Scouts in a Derby Race
T
he Mukwonago Linden Ridge Men’s Club participated in the a Cub Scout soap box derby race on March 26th . The
men’s club elders along with many volunteers worked for two days sanding, painting and detailing the derby cars
for the event. Many laughs, stories and new relationships were developed from the interactions.
The Cub Scout leaders were very generous to include the Ridge residents in the race, and allowed the elders to race in
heats the same way the kids raced that day. It was a fun-filled morning with the fastest elder car made by resident Wayne
Barkley taking first place!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
esidents from the Ridge, Grove and Court gathered
for our annual St. Patrick’s Day party. Green was
the color of choice for decorations, shirts, hats,
necklaces, ice-cream and even beer. Residents were
entertained by a favorite musician, Dan Sullivan. Dan, being
an Irishman himself, weaves stories of his family history and
experiences between Irish songs, some of which he has
written himself. There was lots of singing, dancing and
celebrating. The party ended with God Bless America.
R
Go Packers!!
T
he Grove Residents gathered to celebrate
the Packers going to the Super Bowl with
a Super Bowl party. Decorations included
a homemade banner designed by some of our
residents during a craft program. The menu was
developed at a Resident Council Meeting. The
menu included nachos, barbecued meatballs and
crackers and cheese. Beverages served were a
variety of sodas, beer and wine. Activity Staff read
trivia related to the competing teams and previous
Super Bowls. Residents and staff enjoyed the
camaraderie that was experienced in supporting
our home team.

the children, and the children are amazed at how our home is so
much like theirs.

Thinking Spring
ven though the temperature and snow outside says
winter, LindenGrove in New Berlin is thinking
spring. Working collaboratively with the South
Eastern UW Extension Master Gardeners, we have
officially started planting seedlings and repotting plants.
LindenGrove has a sensory garden for all to enjoy
seasonally. Getting started at this time of year reminds us
of the warmer days ahead. Excitement builds as we watch
the seedlings grow until it’s time to transplant them
outside. Then, along with the help of Master Gardeners,
we can enjoy the fruits of our labor, picking beans,
tomatoes, lavender, chamomile, peppers, etc. We can then
use the fruits of our labor to make salsa, eye pillows,
sachets, and much more! There is nothing better for a
gardener, than warming the heart with plants.

Congratulations
LindenGrove-New Berlin!
C
ongratulation LindenGrove-New Berlin! Every two
years we go through a re-certification process to
be able to be Eden Certified. Eden is philosophy
based on the concept that our residents or those closest
to them, make decisions regarding themselves and their
home. Each resident is still learning and growing and
able to make a difference in the lives of others. Eden has
standards that improve quality of care and quality of life.
We are thrilled that our facility has proven that we strive
for these very same things. We have been re-certified
and value this accomplishment. As Eden is a neverending process, we continue to strive for excellence
every day in every way.

Around the World
o help celebrate the various cultures
from around the world, LindenGroveNew Berlin is taking a different
country and celebrating the diversity it has to offer
for one week each month. We learn and celebrate
various aspects of the culture that include music,
food, history, dance, geography, animals, etc.
T
We started with Africa and as you can see,
fun was had by all. Pictured here are Betty and
Judy learning African drumming and Leona
helping to make African Benne cookies.
We moved on to Greek Week and with a little
help from families, we were provided with many
Greek experiences. Greek food was provided by
Nico Bourantas and Peter Limberatos. It was
explained how to prepare, what ingredients to use,
and traditions associated with it. Residents made
Kourambiethes cookies and Spanakopita. Greek
music and dance were provided by family
members. Athene Kralik and her family show off
their talents as pictured below.
Watch for upcoming countries and
celebrations: Asia, Croatia, France, Spain, and
Germany just to name a few. We are always
looking for people to assist in sharing their
cultures. If you’re interested in sharing your ethnic
heritage, please inquire with the Activity
Department.

checking out the Brewer’s schedule and will be looking at going to 1
or 2 of their games. Of course other favorite destinations are the
Zoo, Frame Park, scenic drives, County Fair and stops for custard!
Watch the calendar to see where we might be headed next.

Linden Court—Waukesha has Adopted Military Friends
inden Court—Waukesha has adopted military
friends as many of our elders and families have
served our country in the past. There is a high
interest among our Elders to write letters to bring a little
“home” to the men and women serving now. There is also an
interest in sending seasonal cards to our veterans at Clement
Zablocki Home.

troop were hit by roadside bombers in Afghanistan. He is
recovering from surgery and expected to be heading back
with his troops to Germany. Since this unit has seen too much
action they will be getting some respite at their home base.
The Elders have made Christmas cards, Valentine cards and
now Easter Cards for our veterans.
Most Mondays in the afternoon, you will find an intergenerational program happening with the Elders. The youth
from Lauer Center come to play a variety of games. Some of
the games they play are countdown, bunko (dice games),
Uno, crazy 8’s, horserace or a variety of games that are
brought by the chaperons or youth. In May the youths will be
planting flowers with the Elders.
We have received acknowledgements of “thank you”
from both the vets and service personnel serving in
Afghanistan. Sgt. Brent Bonnell stationed in Afghanistan,
received our handmade cards, candy, stationery, envelopes
and note cards. He was gracious to make sure the cards and
gifts were distributed among his buddies. We are happy to
report that Sgt. Bonnell and his troop will be heading to his
home base for some needed rest and relaxation. Then he will
be deployed again. Sgt. Sean O’Neill will be receiving our
latest box of get-well cards and snacks. Sgt. O’Neill and his

AWESOME 5TH GRADE DONATION
t. Mary’s 5th graders at Waukesha Catholic included us in their service project again this year. They
selected two Waukesha agencies, LindenGrove and Pregnancy Support Connection to be the recipients
of fleece blankets. They chose these two agencies because they feel both are outstanding organizations
whose mission is to help others. They also wanted their blankets to stay local! Their project started in November
when they held a bake sale to raise money to purchase the supplies. Each of the students worked on tying the
blankets. On March 18 they invited us to come and speak to the students and present the blankets to us. During
their Mass that morning two of the blankets were blessed prior to them presenting them to us! It was a privilege
to be there and explain a bit about LindenGrove to the students and their parents. I thanked them for such
awesome blankets and for the great work they did. The students were assured that the blankets would be shared
with residents from each of our facilities on the Waukesha Campus. So, many thanks go out to Mary Kuemmel
and Linda Bucher the 5th grade teachers at St. Mary’s as well as the parent volunteers, Joli Krismer and Michelle
Foote and of course their wonderful students.

LINDEN COURT - WAUKESHA
Joni Schlais is the new manager at Linden Court in
Waukesha. We welcome her to this position.
Carl Rahn, RN, is working at Linden Court and at Linden
Heights.
LINDEN HEIGHTS
Bowling Outing
L
inden Heights residents often participate in Wii
bowling or bowling with our plastic pins and balls in
our activity room, but on January 20th residents
enjoyed an outing to an actual bowling alley in Waukesha.
Following the game, the residents were treated to soda and
nachos and a few brave ones even tried the jalapeño
peppers served with the nachos.
Theme Days
uring February and March many theme days were
held. On February 5th, in honor of National
Celebration of Chocolate Month, an activity was
held involving the history and interesting trivia about
chocolate. The best part was making truffles and eating
them! February 17th was Route 66 Day. Typical roadside
restaurant menu items were the noon meal fare, followed
by a related activity. February 22nd was Camp Day. Campfire
stories were told and camp meals were featured, including
s’mores for dessert.
D
Piña Coladas in coconut cups with fancy straws, travel
posters and tropical decorations, and piano playing by
resident, Mary Wilkinson. Many of the 30+ residents
attending joined in and sang along.
March 8th, Mardi Gras, was celebrated at Linden Heights
with jambalaya at the noon meal, followed by a Mardi Gras
party, complete with beads, masks, hats, noisemakers, live
music by Don Grzanna, and prune or raspberry filled
paczkis, the traditional Polish Fat Tuesday treat.
St. Patrick’s Day also had a special menu – corned beef &
cabbage, potatoes, and carrots with rye bread, and Irish
cream cheesecake. Earlier in March, Linden Heights enjoyed
a very special Irish treat – a wonderful performance by the
beautifully costumed Trinity Irish Dancers on March 6th. A
full house of residents and family members attended this
special event.
Community Groups
any community groups have participated with
residents in activities. Among these events were
a piano and harp student recital, a
demonstration and activities with Waukesha South High
School wrestlers, Bingo with St. Mark’s Church, Bingo and
nail polishing with Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church,
games with Meadowbrook 4-H, and games with St. Mary’s
Troop 4379. Spring Creek Church youth groups come on
one Saturday each month and provide a craft and one or
more activities. Meadowbrook School also has a continuing
relationship with Linden Heights. In January there was a
Meadowbrook Bingo Night and in March, students and their
families came for a Magical Evening featuring a magician.
M
On February 24th, Cruise Day, residents traveled to several
cruise destinations via video. Lunch again had a special
menu, and an afternoon Happy Hour on the Deck featured
