As a girl I traveled with my parents from our home in big city Milwaukee to tranquil Mukwonago for Maxwell
Street Days market and to take long hikes in the Kettle Moraine forest on the outskirts of this quaint burg.
Looking back fondly on those days, it’s ironic that so many years later I ended up living in Mukwonago and
eventually in a career promoting the very village I came to know as a child. My job as director of the
Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is to help you come to know the charms of this area I call
home.
Since the days of my girlhood, this small village has grown, but it is still a small town with good people and a
Midwestern work ethic. Not only is it a great place to raise kids, it’s a great place to bond with nature or visit
unique shops, restaurants, coffee shops and people. Mukwonago has a few well-known events and attractions that
draw people from a large area. Old World Wisconsin is one of the largest natural history museums in the nation;
Ten Chimneys, the charming historic home of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, is a must for fans of the theatre;
and Elegant Farmer’s apple pie was recently voted best in America. Let’s not forget our festivals like Fall Fest –
a terrific family event that celebrates fall with tons of children’s activities, Maxwell Street Days flea market,
Summerfeste Father’s Day parade and Midnight Magic with its parade, craft show and people who come together
to shop and visit until the wee hours.
Because of its location just off of a major interstate and just minutes from Milwaukee, it is also an attractive
location for commerce and industry. Don’t be fooled - we’re a small town, but we mean business. Many large
businesses have settled here in the village and in our industrial park. Here at the chamber we will be happy to
help you and your business with a pleasant relocation to the area. We’re here to help you.

Just a hop, skip and a jump off of I-43 and Highway 83, the village of Mukwonago lies in a unique setting in
southern Waukesha County, beckoning the shopper who looks for more than the usual shopping experience. We

recreational activities. We have excellent schools, a huge choice of churches and subdivisions popping up all

Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Center
The village of Mukwonago was incorporated as an individual municipality in 1905. A board of six trustees now
governs the village. Three trustees are elected at each annual spring election for a term of two years. The Village
President is chosen at the regular spring election in odd-numbered years for a term of two years. The municipal
justice is elected at the regular spring election in even-numbered years. Currently, there are nine other
administrative/management positions in the village.
The Potowatomi Indians first settled the village of Mukwonago in the 1700s. The village is at the confluence of
the Mukwonago and Fox rivers. The term “Mukwonago” translates to “Place of the Bear.” In the spring of 1836,
Sewall Andrews and Henry Camp (the first “white settlers”) constructed their homes about a mile northwest of
the Indian village. Also in 1836, Mukwonago's first plat was drawn; most of the streets in the old part of the
village still bear the names of the early settlers. The Andrews house still stands today and is now home to the
Mukwonago Red Brick House Museum. In the spring of 1836, Andrews started the village's first mercantile
business and built a store on what was to become “the Village Square.”
For the rest of the 1800s, Mukwonago expanded as a farming community. During this period, dairy and crop
production were the main economic activities. In 1885, completion of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste.
Marie Railroad (the Soo Line, now part of Canadian Pacific)—which runs through the village—provided the
population with transportation and distribution of its products.
In the early 1900s, as the Mukwonago area was “discovered,” travelers came to enjoy the recreational activities
afforded by the lakes, springs and outdoors, and the hospitality and tourism trades began to grow. Day trips to the
area became convenient with the interurban line, which the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company ran
from Milwaukee to East Troy.
The area remained relatively static and contained through the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, however,
new home construction, subdivision development and business expansion escalated; the size of the village itself
grew through annexation. Interstate 43 (the Rock Freeway) was constructed. Running from Milwaukee to Beloit
and passing through Mukwonago, it created a simple and convenient connection to both Milwaukee and Illinois.
This favored commercial and industrial development. The creation of the Mukwonago Industrial Park in the
1980s provided a well-defined home for industry and heavier commerce. At the turn of the 21st century,
Mukwonago's Gateway Center (just south of I-43) became the anchor location for large retail businesses and the
D.N. Greenwald Center (medical), with room for many more to come.
Located in southern Waukesha County, the village of Mukwonago is easy to reach from both Wisconsin and
Illinois via I-43, the Rock Freeway. Mukwonago offers picturesque views of Phantom Lake to the west, Vernon
Marsh State Wildlife Area to the north and the Mukwonago and Fox rivers.
Interstate 94 lies 14 miles to the east, while Interstate 43 is easily accessed with an entrance and exit ramp right at
Mukwonago. State Highways 20, 36 and 83 allow for the smooth flow of traffic to several major municipalities.
County roads and rustic roads make travel both convenient and scenic.
Mukwonago is about 30 minutes from both Milwaukee and Racine. A short drive of about 20 minutes will take
you to the popular vacation resorts of Lake Geneva or Alpine Valley. Mukwonago is a growing Midwest town
that works hard to remain classic and quiet.
Mukwonago is conveniently located within 35 minutes of General Mitchell International Airport and within five
miles of East Troy Municipal Airport. Mukwonago has all of the major attractions of southeastern Wisconsin and
has a small-town atmosphere with a big-city attitude for work, education and recreation.
Between the township and village of Mukwonago, there are many wonderful parks to choose from. You can
walk, swim, fish, bike, ski, sled, boat, play sports and much more.
SNOWMOBILING
Snowmobiling is a popular attraction in the area. Experience mile after mile of snowmobile trails. For more

PARKS
State Park-Kettle Moraine Forest Mukwonago is located just minutes from the edge of the Southern Unit of the
Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has over 22,000 acres of forest. Camping, swimming, hunting, fishing,
hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, biking and horseback riding are available. The Southern Unit

County Park-Mukwonago County Park Located approximately three miles west of the village of Mukwonago on
Highway LO. This 222-acre park site includes a high ridge (formed during the last glacial period) that stretches
nearly the length of the park. Recreational opportunities include swimming, fishing, camping, picnicking, nature

Field Park Located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway NN. Enjoy an
afternoon using the 3,000-square-foot facility equipped with a full kitchen, baseball diamond and a large walking

Indianhead Park Located near Phantom Lake, north of Village Hall. This park features a small pavilion, a beach
and plenty of green open space for other activities.
Miniwaukan Park Located at the end of McKenzie Road behind the Mukwonago Industrial Park and Meadow
Park Estates Subdivision. This area is used by many community organizations, including the Soccer Club and
Braves Football. This park features a football field, Frisbee-golf course, six soccer fields, picnic tables and six
baseball fields.
Minor Park Located along Highway LO just east of Highway I. Minor Park is home to the Mukwonago Women’s
Softball League. Two softball diamonds and a wooded picnic area with a small open shelter make up the park.
Beautiful oak trees and landscape draw many photographers to the park for photos.
Washington Avenue Park Located in the block bordered by Park Avenue to the North, Washington Avenue to the
South, Franklin Street to the West and Division Street to the East, directly next to the Mukwonago Community
Library. The park consists of a basketball court and a baseball diamond, as well as plenty of open space.
Phantom Glen Park Located at the end of Andrews Street along Phantom Lake. This small, quaint park consists
of an open shelter with electricity and is ideal for intimate gatherings.

Mukwonago Town Park Located one block south of the Town Hall, at the intersection of CTH EE and Beulah
Road. Most of the soccer programs are held at this park with two large soccer fields, three medium fields and
three peewee soccer fields. The park also has two baseball fields, a playground structure and a park pavilion. The
Town Park is available for rent.
Lauren’s Park Located on CTH EE just a short distance west of CTH I. Lauren’s Park provides four baseball
diamonds for all age groups during the summer programs. This park also contains two sand volleyball courts, one
basketball hoop, a playground structure and a park pavilion for rent.
Oak Ridge Park The town’s newest park is mainly for soccer program practice fields. This park also contains a
new baseball field. Oak Ridge Park is located south of Sugden Road on Oak Ridge Drive. From Highway 83,
turn west on Sugden Road to Oak Ridge Drive. Turn south and the park is on the left.
GOLFING
Mukwonago golfers never have far to go to find a picturesque and challenging golf course. With a variety of
facilities available, you can choose from championship golf courses that feature 18 to 27 holes, a Scottish links

East Troy Electric Railroad Experience living history at Wisconsin’s landmark railroads! In the days before
urban sprawl, highway congestion, paved roads and automobiles, people got around town by trolley. While all
but gone from most American cities, the East Troy Electric Railroad Museum preserves a unique part of the 19th

Mukwonago Museum - Red Brick House Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Red Brick House
is home to the Mukwonago Museum, which preserves the Mukwonago area’s culture for future generations.
Guests can explore the interior of Waukesha County’s first brick house, walk through the Grutzmacher wing and
view Native American artifacts, and trace the history of Mukwonago through the period rooms. The museum is
located in the heart of Mukwonago at 103 Main Street. Open Sundays from 1:00-4:00 p.m., June-October or by
appointment.
Old World Wisconsin Relive the Spirit of America's Heartland Explore this premier outdoor museum of 19th
century rural and immigrant farm life. Costumed interpreters perform the daily tasks of farmers and shopkeepers
in more than 65 historic buildings. Nearly a dozen ethnic groups are represented at the 1870s Crossroads Village
and 10 farmsteads, stocked with many rare breeds of horses, oxen and hogs. The gardens and fields are planted
with many heirloom varieties of grains, flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables. Nature trails, seasonal special

Ten Chimneys Ten Chimneys, the National Historic Landmark estate of Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn
Fontanne, is open to the public as a world-class house museum and a national resource for theatre and the arts.
Almost all of the estate’s décor and collections are intact and remain unchanged since the Lunts first
assembled them in the 1930s and ’40s. A tour of Ten Chimneys is the perfect treat for out-of-town guests. Open

businesses increase in a steady growth pattern. Mukwonago's location is central to the major economic centers of
southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois (Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago) and major transportation corridors,
