English- This term in Reading we will continue to focus on developing and consolidating our
comprehension skills and strategies. We will be focusing on developing the essential skills of: InferringQuestioning- Predicting- Summarising- Synthesing- Evaluating We will also continue our focus on grammar
and punctuation and make links between these in our reading and writing. Writing this term will be based
around specific genres of writing, with a focus on Author’s Purpose. E.g.; ‘what is the purpose of this piece
of writing?’ ‘Is it to PERSUADE, INFORM or ENTERTAIN?’ Children will explore the different types of writing, and
produce their own written pieces.
Inquiry Learning @ Torquay College- In Grade 4 this term we will be focussing on “How science explains our
amazing world?” We will be exploring questions like; What is a scientist? What do scientists do? Students will
chat with scientists via skype. We hope to develop our understanding of scientific process e.g. developing and
testing hypothesis, predicting, collecting data, conducting experiments and setting up controls. Later in the
term we will investigate biological science, chemical science and physical science, earth and space. To end
the term we will be holding a Science Expo to share our amazing work. Parents will be very welcome to pop in
and have a look.
Maths- Our Year 4 students have been working hard in class, extending their knowledge and
understanding in Measurement and Geometry. There has been some fantastic application of space and
shape by students to the world they live in! Our next unit of work is Number and Algebra, these concepts will
underpin many of the Maths units to follow and students will all be challenged to extend their thinking.
Mathletics units will be assigned to each students accordingly and are an optional homework task.
Huff’n Puff- Huff and Puff is 45 minutes of physical activity where students participate in various activities
each Monday. These activities are designed to get the students moving and huffing and puffing through a
variety of team games, ball games and skills. The activities are run by the classroom teachers.

Mothers’ Day Stall: The Year 4 students will be at Science Works on the day of the Mother’s day stall. We
have arranged for them to shop the day before. On Wednesday 4th May the Yr 4 students can bring up to
$5:00 to school to buy a gift at the Mother’s Day stall in the Presentation Room. Any students who miss
buying a gift on Wednesday 4th can call into the office on Friday 6th May as they will have leftover items
available for sale.
Communication: We feel that diaries are a great form of communication and the Year 4 teachers will
endeavor to sign them on Tuesdays and Fridays. As we are encouraging the children to read nightly we
would like you to record the title of the book, pages read and sign it. Parents can also contact teachers via
the school: Email:torquay.p6.co@edumail.vic.gov.au Phone:(03)5261 2360
