Classrooms at Warragul North Primary School were jam packed with students, parents, older siblings, grandparents and relatives for ‘Night School’. Students were excited to attend school in the evening and welcome their family members. The range of activities on offer was truly amazing and clearly illustrated how students are engaged in learning. Science experiments, technology stations, numeracy challenges and games, i-Pad activities and literacy tasks were on offer across the school. As Principal of Warragul North Primary School, I am always very proud to open our school during Education Week. It was very rewarding to see the students enthusiastically showing their families, friends and special visitors their classrooms and the excellent learning they are continually undertaking. Thanks to our wonderful staff for being so generous with their time. Their generosity enabled our families, friends and special visitors to attend Night School and Grandparent and Special Persons’ day. School tours for prospective families were taken by our School Captains and Student Leaders and they showcased our school very well indeed. Top job! O'Dowd's Rd. Warragul North. P.O. Students can reach their potential only when they are happy, healthy and safe. Students also need a positive school culture to engage and support them in their learning. When home and school operate in partnership to provide these conditions, student learning can support young learners to reach their potential. Our Warragul North Primary School values and rules help provide a happy and safe environment for all. I encourage our school community to assist students learn about the values and rules. Being Tolerant of Others - accepting people with their differences and not making overall judgements of people’s character (‘good person’, ‘bad person’) based on their differences or behaviour. This means being kind and friendly. 2. Thinking First - thinking that when someone treats you badly, you need to think about different ways you can act, the consequences of each possible action, and the impact of your actions on how the other person will feel. 3. Playing By The Rules - thinking that by following important school and home rules, you will live in a better world where everyone’s rights are respected. Examples of Getting Along behaviour: Treating teachers and classmates with respect. Following important classroom and school rules. Listening and not interrupting in class when someone else is talking. Being helpful when working in a group. Talking rather than fighting when someone acts unfairly. Sharing materials. Helping someone else with their learning. In a ‘nutshell’ Getting Along means being kind, friendly, including others and co-operating with each other. iteracy ngagement chievement espect umeracy ntegrity urturing etting Along 4 Last week the Year One and Two children had an early start as they headed off on their excursion to Scienceworks. The bus trip was very exciting as they travelled through the Domain tunnel and across the West Gate Bridge. On arrival at Scienceworks the children enjoyed their snack before venturing into the general viewing area where there was many interesting gadgets to explore. A visit to the Alice in Wonderland exhibition followed and the children enjoyed climbing through the rabbit hole and peeking through lots of keyholes. The next stop was the Nitty Gritty City which included a Lego model of Melbourne, including Scienceworks. There was a construction site which proved very popular. After lunch the children relaxed in the planetarium and watched the movie, Tyco to the Moon, and also learnt some very interesting facts about our night sky and the stars. It was a fantastic day and a great learning experience for the Year One and Two students. 5 Scienceworks Student Reflections ... We made future cars. We used computers to choose the type, wheels, features and the colour. We saw cars appear on the big screen. By Miranda (2MU) At Scienceworks I liked climbing through the rabbit tunnel. It was fun making the caterpillars legs work. By Cooper (1BO) The Nitty Gritty Super City was amazing! There was a boat people worked on and buildings people worked on. There were microscopes, a digger that picked up balls, a weather report, a café, a miniature city, bugs and a rope you pulled and stuff went up. By Maeve (2MU) I saw a car from the future at Scienceworks and I sat on a cool motorbike. By Matilda (1VA) We went to the planetarium and we watched two movies. It was relaxing because you could lie down on the chair. First we watched Tycho’s Trip to the Moon after that we joined the stars. By Jayla (2MU) 6 OUR ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY GROUP HAS ORGANISED A Thursday 9th June 7 What is Nude Food? Nude Food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. The best type of nude food consists mainly of fresh food, so that it is healthy and nutritious PLUS environmentally friendly. Promoting Nude Food empowers students to make conscious choices about what they eat, and encourages them to think about their impact on the environment (and their health). You might be amazed with how enthused your child can become on this... To pack a Nude Food Lunch or Snack, you will need: • Cutlery from home is better than throwaway plastic ones • Plastic or metal drink bottles are recommended for refilling with water • Reusable containers for putting all of your food, snacks and drinks into • Lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections can be useful to avoid lost lids or containers Try to avoid: • Zip lock or plastic bags, plastic wrap or aluminium foil • Tetra packed drinks, single serve yoghurts and cheese • Single use plastic forks and spoons • Prepackaged food, i.e. biscuits, snack bars and chips Tips for Packing Nude Food Lunches: • Try to involve the kids in helping decide what to take. This will help to avoid uneaten foods being thrown out, plus will save your family money as well. Also, remember to praise your child if they do eat something healthy which is new for them. • Try to pack the lunches the night before and store in the fridge overnight to avoid the mad rush in the morning. • If your child normally enjoys chips, yoghurt or other prepackaged snacks, buy these in a larger format and you can decant these into smaller reusable containers or lunchbox. • If your child does enjoy chips, why not try making your own vegie versions using sliced beetroot, parsnip or sweet potato and baking in the oven? • Try to use fruit and vegetables that are in season. Seasonal produce is friendly to the environment as well as to your budget, as less fuels are used to transport it into your supermarket. • Go to www.nudefoodday.com.au/resources for Nude Food recipe ideas. It is designed to encourage children to be proud of themselves, their school and to understand the responsibilities and rewards of community participation. During 2015 staff at Warragul North Primary School have agreed to regularly bestow this honour on a student. ‘Aussie of the Month’ for May is: Flynn (0HI) Flynn Furphy is the worthy recipient of this month’s ‘Aussie of the Month’ award. Flynn demonstrates kindness and respect to all his teachers and his peers. He is a caring friend to everyone and follows the school rules at all times. Flynn is a wonderful role model who is attentive and enthusiastic in all learning areas, showing quiet confidence as he completes his learning to the very best of his abilities. Flynn is consistently organised for learning, gathering everything he needs and helping others to do the same. Hello again, Ryan Percy here from School Council. Secondly, the School has its annual 2017 Foundation Students Information Evening on 26 July 2016 starting from 7pm in the BER Building. As the school is funded based on number of enrolled students, I encourage you to get in your friends and families ears to arrange a private school tour with Ms Collins or Ms Taylor and definitely ensure they attend this information evening where everything about the school and the opportunities available to our awesome students will be showcased. I wish to take the opportunity to use this fortnight’s newsletter to inform you of two important ways that you may be able to help the school (and your children) financially over the coming months. Firstly, WNPS now has a School Building Fund and a School Library Fund that the Australian Taxation Office has granted deductible gift recipient status to. Mr Ryan Percy School Councillor Book Fair 13 We had an amazing selection of books arrive from Lamont Books for our Book Fair which was held during Education Week. A huge array of lovely books was displayed in the Library so that children could visit during their library sessions. The children were keen to write a wish list of the books that appealed to them. Many brought their families to the Book Fair open night where they enjoyed sharing the books and purchasing. Thank you to everyone who supported the annual Book Fair. We were thrilled to sell $9639.20 worth of books, which enabled the school to receive books to the value of $3654.00 for the Library. Mrs Ann Burton Library Technician 14 OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE Now that the weather is becoming wintry we often use the gym for After School Care instead of playing outside. The children enjoy a variety of games with older children helping the younger ones. We are also making use of the covered verandah at the OSHC house. One area is set up as a kitchen, another for ball games. We are delighted to report that our OSHC service received an Exceeding National Standards rating in our recent accreditation. Children and staff have celebrated this week with a party theme to activities and food at snack time.
