Barwon Heads Primary School ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ 1574 Barwon Heads Primary School Newsletter 12th May 2016 Barwon Heads Primary School Phone: 5254 2324 Fax: 5254 3073 Website: www.bhps.vic.edu.au Email: barwon.heads.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au Compass Website: https://bhps.vic.jdlf.com.au/ Term Dates: A Word from Our Principal Term 2: 11 April to 24 June With the grade 5’s and 6’s at Lightening Premiership this Friday, I asked the grade 4’s if there were any willing volunteer leaders interested in running our assembly tomorrow. Typically the response was both fantastic and overwhelming. There is no doubt about our students, when it comes to stepping out of their comfort zone and having a go at something new and potentially challenging. We are always looking for opportunities to give our students public speaking experience, regularly getting students from all grades to speak at assembly. The experience can help to build confidence, and resilience. Our students often make it look all very easy in speaking in front of a 500+ audience, but I know that they prepare thoroughly behind the scenes. This week’s assembly will be lead by: Daniel Griffen Pippi McIntyre Liv Quirk Hazel Burgess I’m sure they will be great replacements for our unavailable school captains. Well done to all our grade 4s who tried out. It is great to see so many parents proactively seeking training in how to help their child in the classroom (and at home) Ms Booth has told me she thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and was very impressed with the level of engagement in the questions that were asked. Ms Booth made Barwon Heads Primary School promotes integrity, life-long learning and the attainment of excellence. modifications to the previous program, and as an experienced teacher and educational leader in the school, I know the content was both detailed and informative. Social Services 2015/2016 The two social services BHPS students have voted on supporting in 2016 are: Give Where You Live Beyond Blue Gold Coin donations collected for ‘Out of Uniform’ last day of terms goes towards supporting these social services. We were fortunate last week in having representatives from both the Red Cross, and River’s Gift attend our assembly where we were able to present both organisations with cheques for $500. It was extremely informative for our students to have the representatives provide us with some background into their charities and what the money goes towards. We received this letter during the week On behalf of Red Cross, I would like to thank you and the whole school for the generous donation to Red Cross. It will certainly be appreciated and will help out for people in need. I enjoyed being part of your assembly and am pleased to see such a wonderful Primary school in your town. Your Sincerely, Biddy Gubbins Staffing News We look forward to Mrs Cross returning next week from her 5 week Long Service Leave. Ms Booth and Miss Jordan have been very capably filling the Assistant Principal role in her absence. The shared position allowed them the opportunity to lead new school improvement projects, as well as be on hand to support their teaching grades where required. Like our students, our staff are always willing to step up when required and I am extremely appreciative they do so in such a competent and capable manner. Web Article A parent recently sent me the link to this story which I thought was well worth sharing also. http://www.theage.com.au/comment/-gopqef.html Education Week There will be a number of special activities planned next week and we would like to invite all parents to join in classroom activities with their children from 12.30 1.30 Friday week, 20th May. We also encourage parents to and to share lunch with their child/ren Miss Curtain and 4A have also been working on the construction of an Estimation Exhibition, which will be in the gym. All classes will attend throughout the day to estimate the collections in each jar. Parents are also invited to estimate the contents over the lunch break. NAPLAN Students in Grade 3 and 5 students undertook the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy tests (NAPLAN) this week. Students sat 4 x 40 to 50 minute tests in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy over a 3 day period from Tuesday to Thursday. These tests along with formal assessments undertaken by classroom teachers assist us in measuring the progress of students and in planning for future curriculum. Schools are held very accountable for the results of these tests and all students were expected to complete them. These tests do not however assess all of what makes each of our students exceptional and unique. The people who score the NAPLAN tests do not know that some of our students love to sing, are good at drawing or can teach others to do things on computers or the iPad. They have not seen the way they communicate with others or how they care for others. They do not know that their friends count on them to be there for them. The people who score the NAPLAN tests cannot see how they take care of their brothers, sisters and pets. They do not know if they participate in sports or see that they are caring and that every day Barwon Heads Primary School promotes integrity, life-long learning and the attainment of excellence. they do their best because these attributes are not tested. These are the things they know, their parents know and their teacher knows. The scores they get from these tests will tell us how they performed on that day, but they will not tell us everything. They don’t tell us that they may have improved on something that they once found difficult. They don’t tell you that they brighten up their teacher’s day. They don’t tell you how amazingly special they are. And they don’t tell us how special they make our school and the lives of everyone they interact with. Building Works Our appointed builders will be a regular fixture on our school environment until the end of the year. The anticipated completion date of our 5 new classrooms and external associated works will be January 2017. Despite the obvious and necessary inconveniences that will occur during the building phase, the final outcome will make this period extremely worthwhile. It is yet another exciting time for BHPS and we look forward to the official commencement of the building phase. The first notable inconvenience has been the reduction in the capacity of our office area car park and playground. There are plans for this major project on the window of my office for those who are interested. Mr Darren Roskosch Principal School Communication Update In the weeks to come you will notice a change in the way you receive your information that is usually contained in our school newsletter. Since the introduction of Compass the way in which we communicate with our school community has changed significantly. This was a direct response to our parent opinion survey. Classes have their own newsletters, blogs and class dojo’s has led to a reduction in the amount of information that needs to appear in our newsletter. Over the next few months we will continue to provide both the old type of newsletter and also transfer our favourite items like BHPS Superstars to our Compass program. “YOU CAN DO IT AWARDS” 00A 00B 00C 1A 1B 1C 2A 2B 2C 3A 3B 34C 4A 4B 5A 5B 56C 6A 6B Helena Iluka George Sarah Eden Harper Scienceworks Excursion Scienceworks Excursion Scienceworks Excursion Tallin Beatrix Monty Liv Meg Erin Lenny Emma Max Hero Floyd Leilani Harry Mackenzie Lucy George Scienceworks Excursion Scienceworks Excursion Scienceworks Excursion Harper Taiyo Banjo Ethan Emi Jema Abi Flynn Sienna William Language Awards Well done to the following students for their outstanding work in Indonesian.
