Guercino Research & Conservation Project
Talk: Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting:
Inspiration and Rivalry 9 June, 7pm
Guercino (1591-1666), Jacob Blessing the
Sons of Joseph, c.1620, undergoing
multispectral examination in the Imaging
Studio at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
The Gallery’s painting, Jacob Blessing the Sons
of Joseph by Guercino (Giovanni Barbieri), has
been in the Paintings Conservation studio at
the J. Paul Getty Museum for several months
now.
During these initial months, photographic
documentation has been carried out to
visually record the current condition of the
painting’s surface. In addition, various
methods of technical examination have been
employed; x-radiography, infrared
reflectography, and careful study under a
stereomicroscope are some of the techniques
that have allowed conservators to
differentiate the artist’s hand from that of
past restorers, as well as to establish the state
of the canvas support. New innovative noninvasive methods of examining the painting,
such as multispectral imaging, are providing
information about certain pigments that
Guercino used in creating this masterpiece.
Further research and understanding of the
materials and techniques used by Guercino
is an important stage prior to starting actual
treatment of the painting.
