CLEAPSS - Health and Safety for Secondary Science Subject Leaders - Chelmsford area
Event Summary
High quality practical work is a key feature of outstanding science teaching. In general, school science
has a very good safety record. However, accidents can happen and all science department staff should
understand what is required of them by H&S legislation. Teachers, technicians and managers need and
work together to ensure that students experience a wide range of practical activities and that any risks
suitably controlled.
This one-day course offers a structured professional development opportunity for a school or college
science department. Aimed at subject leaders, the course enables the department to update their
awareness of health and safety legislation and consider the implications for their own day-day practices.
Senior Leader Team members with responsibility for the science department and/or health and safety
would also find the workshop useful.

CLEAPSS - Radiation Protection Supervisor Training - Secondary Staff - Chelmsford
Event Summary
This one-day course is for the school Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), i.e. the person responsible
for managing the safe storage, use and monitoring of radioactive sources in the science department.
CLEAPSS believes that the RPS should be a member of the teaching staff, often the Head of Physics.
(See CLEAPSS leaflet PS75, which explains why the RPS should be a teacher). Technicians are
welcome to attend the course provided they are accompanied by the RPS. Event description
The course is based on the CLEAPSS guide L093 Managing Ionising Radiations and Radioactive
Substances (2013). It includes practical demonstrations and answers questions frequently asked on the
CLEAPSS Helpline. There are opportunities to raise issues and to ask specific questions.
Topics covered include:
legislation and guidance
nuclear physics, radioactivity and radiation - teaching and resources
storage of radioactive substances
using radioactive sources to demonstrate the properties of ionising radiations
doses and biological effects of ionising radiations
radiological protection and its management
responsibilities of the RPS, including Local Rules
different types of radioactive sources and their care (including preparing sources for half-life
