is each person responsible for?
PIKinc. creates, customizes and installs your e-Branch Library and coordinates all the details with you and your staff. But

• choosing subjects and sites for the buttons on your main and submenu splash pages
• giving PIKinc. your library’s IP address, subnet mask and domain name servers
• installing electrical, phone and data lines at the leased site
• buying a router and properly installing it
• assigning a level 1 support person
• providing the level 1 support person at installation to aid in kiosk placement
3M
After you have accomplished the tasks above, PIKinc. will provide:

8. How have customers responded to the e-Branch Library so far?
The e-Branch Libraries around the country are averaging over 4,000 kiosk uses per month with neither additional staff nor
longer library hours.
9. Who maintains my e-Branch Library?
PIKinc. provides a full service maintenance contract for your e-Branch Library. The PIKinc. service agreement includes parts,
labor and software upgrades that are made available generally to all PIKinc. customers. Your library does, however, assume a
portion of the maintenance responsibility. You must assign a Level 1 support person to fill the paper holder and add toner and
generally clean the workstation. PIKinc. diagnostically monitors all machines every night and will notify the Level 1 support
person if something is wrong. Your library’s support person then goes to the e-Branch Library and describes what he/she sees
and works with PIKinc. to resolve the problem. If immediate corrections are not possible, PIKinc. sends a technician to correct the problem. The library support person also attends the installation.

10.
Will I have to pay for copier paper and toner?
It’s up to you. Your e-Branch Library can recover costs for paper and toner by charging customers who wish to print documents right at the kiosk a minimal fee per page. Customers can pay using coins, credit or debit cards. The coin receptor is
standard and is secured by a steel safe inside the e-Branch Library. The money belongs to your library. You may also add an
optional dollar acceptor. The e-Branch Library can also process credit and debit card transactions. PIKinc. contracts with a
secure service bureau that handles the credit card transactions, so there is no need for your library to have an arrangement
with a credit card company. A portion of the credit/debit card income also belongs to the library.
11. What happens if someone leaves the e-Branch Library in one of its applications?
The e-Branch Library software has a watchdog that detects when the screen has been left untouched. It can be set at two minutes or any time length you wish. Once the “no use” time has elapsed, the e-Branch Library automatically returns to the main
menu and is ready for customer use. Prior to returning to the main menu, the software asks users if they wish to continue. If
so, they simply touch the “yes” button and the e-Branch Library will remain in the application.

Davenport Public Library
installs PIKiosk™ at busy grocery store
Many libraries can quickly identify
populations within their communities
that do not receive adequate library
service. These “under-served” can be
anyone not using the library, of course,
but typically they are rural or inner-city
residents for whom transportation to a
branch library can be difficult, or suburban people who prefer quicker
options than driving to their library.
The Davenport Public Library (DPL),
under director Kay Runge, identified
the west side of town—one of the
busiest locations of the city at the farthest distance from a library branch—
as one of these under-served areas. It
was served by bookmobile only. So
Runge and her library board looked
into the purchase of a PIKiosk™, which
she had seen demonstrated at industry
trade shows. The ATM-like kiosk gives
off-site access to virtually all the information services libraries have to offer,
such as online circulation catalogs and
the Internet, including e-mail.
DPL purchased a PIKiosk with state
grant money and installed it on March
14, 1998, in the high-traffic entrance of
a Hy-Vee grocery store. The state paid
for the unit itself and one year’s maintenance costs; DPL was responsible for
electronic installation and phone line
expenses; and Hy-Vee paid the electricity. The PIKiosk was a natural addition
to Hy-Vee’s full-service offerings,
which include a bank branch, pharmacy, florist and photo processor.
West side patrons can now select
“Davenport Public Library Catalog” on
the PIKiosk screen and draw from the
complete common catalog of the 27library consortium called “Quad-LINC”
(Quad Cities Libraries in Cooperation);
reserve materials and place holds as if
they were at the library itself and pick
them up later at the bookmobile; and
check their account status. They’ve also
gained free access to Iowa’s full-text
databases, including reference databases, periodicals, newspapers, maps,
images, businesses, health organizations and encyclopedias.
According to Connie Owings, technical
services manager for DPL, the response
in sheer numbers of “hits” has been
outstanding, with 6,712 recorded in
September 1999 compared to the
PIKiosk average of around 4,000 reference information requests per month
per kiosk. “And we’ve logged only one
user complaint since installation,” she
confesses. “Someone couldn’t get to his
e-mail, which we quickly fixed.”

“We also love it from a maintenance
standpoint,” says Owings. “Since the
bookmobile stops at the installation site
regularly, that staff checks the unit for
problems. So we rarely have to make
special maintenance trips. And no one
knows better than we do how difficult it
is for large numbers of people to share
common workstations and not have a
lot of breakdowns. PIKiosk’s durable
design stands up to the test.”
“It seems obvious to most of us here at
Davenport that the PIKiosk has helped
us extend public information to a population who has every right to it and who
we might never have reached without
the PIKiosk,” Owings concludes.

• Narrow the Digital Divide
• Perfect for “on-the-go” customers
• Enhances Public Image
• LSTA Grant Opportunities
12. Who will be involved in the installation and set-up of my e-Branch Library and what
is each person responsible for?
PIKinc. creates, customizes and installs your e-Branch Library and coordinates all the details with you and your staff. But
before installation can occur, you and your staff are responsible for:
• acquiring a location for your e-Branch Library
• specifying the color and copy for the kiosk surround graphics (signage)
• choosing subjects and sites for the buttons on your main and submenu splash pages
• giving PIKinc. your library’s IP address, subnet mask and domain name servers
• installing electrical, phone and data lines at the leased site
• buying a router and properly installing it
• assigning a level 1 support person
• providing the level 1 support person at installation to aid in kiosk placement
3M
After you have accomplished the tasks above, PIKinc. will provide:
• surround signage
• graphics for your main and submenu splash pages
• all system integration
• on-time delivery of your e-branch library
• on-site kiosk installation
