Marriage Notices from The North
Carolina Whig, 1852-1857
These marriage notices from The North Carolina Whig, a newspaper published in Charlotte,
North Carolina, cover the period from 1852 to 1857 and were compiled by OMGS member
Glenn M. Cook. The remaining notices running from 19 January 1858 and to 30 September
1862, which was the last extant issue carrying marriage notices before the Whig ceased
publication in 1863, will be posted on this webpage in December 2005.
Notices of weddings were not restricted to Charlotte and Mecklenburg County but also came
from the surrounding counties of Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan,
and Union as well as Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Duplin, and Wake. South Carolina counties
were represented by York, Chester, Charleston, Kershaw, and Lexington. Former Mecklenburg
residents sent their announcements in from McKinley, Alabama; Paulding County, Georgia,
Panola, Mississippi; and Tipton Co., Tennessee.
The Whig marriage notices bridge the gap between notices that have been abstracted from
Charlotte’s other newspapers and published separately, some partially on the Internet. The
following published marriage abstracts may be found in the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room
of the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County: The Charlotte Journal (1835-1851), the
Mecklenburg Jeffersonian (1841-1849), and the Charlotte Democrat (1871-1876).
