LIFE AT NZIS...
IT’S ALL GO, GO, GO!
SPORTING ACADEMIES
NZIS has developed sporting academies and sport teams at all campuses in order to provide more opportunities and pathways for our
students. These sporting academies are high-performance, targeted
centers of excellence that help outstanding athletes reach their full potential. Attendance and completion of NZIS educational requirements
are paramount to selection in the academies.
NZIS Rugby and Rugby League Academies
NZIS Sports Teams
Our NZIS Rugby and Rugby League Academies are designed
to maximise success for students wanting to continue on
to higher levels in sport and education. We have identified
the need for potential professional players to have another
pathway to achieve success. These academies provide
opportunity for young talent to increase specific skills across
their codes. Former professional players Daniel Farani, Ali
Koko, Johnny Leo’o and Wade Brunsdon run the academies
and give the students a great learning experience.
NZIS runs several sports teams, such as indoor netball,
indoor cricket, netball, basketball and touch. This all helps
build the social cohesion of the student body and helps those
from out of town to quickly become part of the NZIS family.
NZIS High Performance Academies
We have been successfully running high performance
academies at the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch
campuses for the last few years. The aim of the academy is to
assist our top performing sports individuals with training and
off field preparation.
The focus for the academy is to improve strength, power,
speed and agility to push our students to attain a higher level
of conditioning. Academy sessions are designed to show the
different forms of high end conditioning exercises
that professional athletes utilise and allows students
to work these into their own trainings.
NZIS Volleyball Team
Our NZIS Volleyball Team has been extremely successful
over the past 15 years, competing in local and regional
volleyball league competitions and held the title of
national champions. Former New Zealand coach and
Deputy CEO at NZIS, Shelley Addison, is proud of
the NZIS volleyball team achievements. Our academy
allows young players from the NZIS programme to play
alongside experienced NZIS and national team players.

ACTIVITIES
Work Placements
Orientation Week
These opportunities are provided for you to get
invaluable experience at the ‘coal face’ of the sport,
fitness and recreation industries. They often lead to jobs
directly from your work placement. You can get work
experience opportunities and placements in a wide
variety of industries: regional sports bodies, trusts and
organisations, fitness, leisure, and recreation centres,
schools and gyms. We encourage you to apply your new
skills from the classroom in a practical way and gain
awesome experience on the job at the same time.
When the first week of course arrives, you can expect a lot of
social interaction!
Returning and new students get immersed in our induction
activities from fitness testing to dragon boating, quiz nights,
“operation snapshot”, rock climbing, rafting, social events
and much more!
Sport & Fitness Related Practicums
You can earn credits through doing practicums based
upon fitness and sport, and develop skills through
activities like massage, strapping, aquatics, refereeing,
specialised fitness classes and training methodologies
in modules. There may be some additional costs.
Sports Exchange
China Cultural Tour
Accommodation
Sharing with other NZIS students is a great way to form
life long friendships. We can provide assistance and
help you find a safe, centrally located accommodation
to make your stay at NZIS enjoyable, cost effective
and hassle free. You can choose between flatting with
other NZIS students or generic flatting arrangements.
When enrolling on NZIS courses, be sure to request
an accommodation registration form to ensure an
arrangement is found that suits your needs.
Camp Week
During first term, camp week is a highlight where you are
taken out of your comfort zone and into a challenging outdoor
environment. During this time, team cohesion is developed as
the students get to know each other.
This exciting competition is a chance
for students to show their excellence
in sports. The Sports Exchange is
all about fun, social interaction and
healthy competition!
Event Management Experience
Our students are involved in a large number of events
throughout the year, either as part of their study or as
part of experiential learning. NZIS students have been
instrumental in organising the National Secondary School
and Club Volleyball Championships, their own Clash of the
Houses, the NZ Super Games, the NZIS Golf Tournament,
as well as assisting with Fight for Life. Our conference,
NZIS ‘Fit for Life’ attracts fitness industry participants
wanting to advance in their professional development.
Each year students compete between
campuses in a variety of sports
including rugby, netball, volleyball,
indoor cricket, soccer, crossfit and
athletics. The games are played over
four days and is NZIS’s event of the
year.
USA Women’s Rugby Tour
International Sports Tours
Each year NZIS offers new opportunities for students to travel
overseas on sport and cultural exchanges. Previous tours
include volleyball at Tsuda Sport Institute in Japan, men’s
& women’s rugby in USA, indoor netball & basketball in
Australia, netball in Fiji and more.
