Result
This high bay replacement project has been carried out for the H1 Hangar of
Etihad Airways, the national Airline of the United Arab Emirates.
The hangar has the capacity to accommodate three full-size aircrafts at any
time.
According to evaluations of the difficulties and challenges faced by the maintenance team at Etihad Airways, the hangar’s round-the-clock operation of 24
hours a day placed continuous stress on the existing metal halide fixtures, accelerating lumen depreciation and necessitating repeated replacement of the
lamps.
Two problems played an obstacle to timely operation and maintenance of a
large fleet of the hangar’s 120 aircrafts: first, the lights were difficult to reach at
their height of 25m, and second, the illuminance levels offered by the existing
fixtures were well below the recommended lux level to perform aircraft maintenance tasks.
These difficulties adversely affected the operation of the hangar, thereby being
problematic to service a large fleet of 120 aircrafts.
After analysis of the challenges faced by the operations team and an on-site survey, the SEGA-500 High Power High Bay was selected as the optimal solution to
meet all requirements while appealing aesthetically and eliminating glare issues
related to high power light sources.
The total quantity of fixtures halved from 226 units of 450 metal halide lamps to
113 units of SEGA-500W while meeting the recommended average lux level for
aircraft hangars of 400-450 lux. The additional energy savings and added convenience of lighting control operations were provided in the form of GigaTera’s
Wireless Lighting Control Solution, (GeSS) by applying the IPC Wall Switch inside
the duty manager’s office. Through this system, 6 zones have been created for the
hangar for customizable lighting based on sections of the facility and operational
schedules. Also, the color rendering (CRI) has been improved to a rating over 80,
resulting in a more visually pleasing work environment.
When both the GigaTera lights and the old metal halide lights are run at full power,
the GigaTera lights achieve 45% energy savings. However, higher savings are easily
achievable for a maximum of 82% energy savings by turning off lights in unoccupied bays through the GeSS system. This convenient method of controlling and
turning off lights adds to the longevity of the LED lighting to further eliminate
maintenance needs by more precisely using the light only when it is needed.

Benefit
The hangar had originally operated with 125 sets of metal halides in a 2x450W
configuration, resulting in an average output of less than 200 lux.
Based on the type of work performed in the hangar, the lux level needed to be
improved to an average level of 400-450 lux, as well as improvements to the maintenance needs of the fixtures and energy savings for optimal operational and energy efficiency.
The replacement of the existing metal halide lights with GigaTera’s LED high bay
solution has not only given a big margin of 45%-82% in energy savings, but also
has improved the average illuminance levels by 125% with a high level of illuminance uniformity. All of these improvements, further added by an increased
CRI of over 80, has created a work atmosphere that is comfortable and pleasing
to worker’s eyes to improve the efficiency of operations. Additionally, the client’s
goals of reducing the maintenance needs of fixtures have been furthered through
the use of wireless controls for precise control over when lights are used as they
are needed.
