Alberta Innovates Visual Identity Guidelines November 2011 PAGE 1 1. Introduction About the visual identity The visual identities for the Alberta Innovates organization reflect the renewed spirit of cooperation and alignment between the Alberta government and Alberta Innovates and within the Alberta Innovates organization. These visual identities reflect this alignment by leveraging core elements of the Alberta brand. The scripted “A” shape within each coloured box captures the strength and spirit of both our province and the new system. The brand colours are part of the Alberta brand colour family and the typeface is modern yet official and credible, emphasizing the legitimacy of the new visual identity. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 2 2. Our Identity Icon Logotype 2.1 Alberta Innovates family of logos Under the banner of Alberta Innovates, the Alberta government has created five new agencies that are building on Alberta’s strengths in the bio, energy and environment, health and technology sectors. The visual identity for each new agency shares the look and feel of the new primary visual identity for Alberta Innovates, but the fresh, modern colours provide the main differentiating element. The logotype is executed in the same typeface but uses colour, tone and line weight to distinguish the umbrella name from the agencies and to make it easier to read. 2.2 Ownership of logos In order to maintain uniformity of the Alberta Innovates brand, the Government of Alberta has registered and owns the official marks or trade-marks for the Alberta Innovates name and logo and the names and logos of the five agencies. The Government has granted a license or necessary permission to each of the agencies for use of the Alberta Innovates name and logo and the applicable agency name and logo. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 3 2. Our Identity 2.3 Minimum Size 2.4 Clear Space If the visual identity is too small, it may be difficult to read and understand. Make sure it is clear and legible where ever it is used. In order to size the visual identity without distorting it, use the scaling tool in your graphics software program. Insert the appropriate percentage to make sure the visual identity is scaled properly in both directions. The visual identity needs space to make sure it is prominent and recognizable. As a rule of thumb, make sure the space around the visual identity is the same size as the “A” in “Alberta Innovates”. Nothing should invade this clear space around the visual identity. * 0.375" or 1 cm or 40 px Things to remember: The minimum size is determined by the height of the square, not the height of the text. 0.375" or 1 cm or 40 px Minimum Size Clear Space ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 4 3. Standard Usage * Things to remember: The improper usage guide applies to all agency logos. 3.1 Proper Usage 3.2 Improper Usage The graphic portion is referred to as the icon. The text portion is called the logotype. Together, the icon and logotype make up the Alberta Innovates logo. The icon and logotype must be always used together. Here are some examples of improper usage. Please refer to Sections 8 to 12 for specific information regarding each agency. Full-coloured logos on a white background are the preferred choice for all applications. Black or other colour backgrounds should be avoided and are the rare exception. Do not design materials that require reverse out logo applications. Colour Use only the approved colours. Colour Do not use the logo in any one colour other than solid black. Effects Do not use any effects, including drop shadows. Screens The logo should not appear as a screen. Logotype Icon and the logotype should be used in the approved configuration and should not be modified. Logotype Do not recreate logotype using any other typeface. Size Relationship The size relationship between the icon and the logotype should remain constant. If any elements of the logo need to be re-sized, they should be re-sized proportionally. Proportion Never stretch or condense the logo. Minimum Size The logo should not appear at a size where the total height of the icon is less than 0.375” ,1cm or 40 pixels. If absolutely necessary because an external application requires it, a one-colour version with reverse text may be implemented on a black background. Backgrounds of other colours require reverse logos and text. Alberta Innovates ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 5 3. Standard Usage * Things to remember: The improper usage guide applies to all agency logos. 3.2 Improper Usage The following illustrations give examples of improper use of the agency logos. Please note that there are certain instances where Alberta Innovates logo is preferred over agency logos. Please refer to Section 3 for more information on how to use the Alberta Innovates logo. Gradient Gradient on the icon adds the dynamic feel of the logo. Logo should not be appear in full color without the gradient. Logotype Only use specified colours on the logo type. Do not alter the colours on logotype. Logotype Only use specified colours on the logotype. Do not alter the colours on logo type. Gradient Do not alter the location of gradient. Reversed logo Please use care and caution when the logo has to be used in reverse application. For correct usage, refer to Section 5 to 10. Icon Only use the specified icon for each organization. Do not mix and match colours. If you are at all uncertain if a particular usage conforms to these guidelines, please contact: Cindy Bedard Communications Advanced Education and Technology Phone: 780-427-9494, cindy.bedard@gov.ab.ca Two or more agency logos When there is a need for using two agency logos, please use the Alberta Innovates logo. Frame Do not use a frame around the logo. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 6 3. Standard Usage 3.3 Vertical Treatment In cases where there is limited horizontal space, it is acceptable to use a vertical treatment of the Alberta Innovates logos. Please note the minimum size requirement and clear space rule for the vertical treatment is the same as the horizontal treatment. Refer to Sections 2.3 and 2.4 on page three of this document for more information. When resizing the visual identity, rescale the logo type and icon together to ensure there is no distortion between the two elements. Here are the acceptable vertical treatments of the visual identity for each of the agencies. * Things to remember: the size relationship between the icon and the logotype should remain constant. If any elements of the logo need to be re-sized, they should be re-sized proportionally. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 7 3. Standard Usage Alberta Innovates poster 3.4 Working with Government of Alberta logo The Government of Alberta logo only appears on materials that have the Alberta Innovates logo (see the poster example on the right), not those that have the agency logos. On the majority of materials that have the agency logos, the words "Funded by the Government of Alberta" shall appear below the agency logo in lieu of the Government of Alberta logo. For an 8.5 x 11 inch document, 11 pt Helvetica Neue is the standard. Larger applications should be adjusted accordingly. These words should be typeset no smaller than 6.5 point Helvetica Neue. It takes more than a genius to solve the problems of the world. YOU’RE ONE CONNECTION AWAY from bringing your life’s work to the world. The following chart illustrates the colours that fall within the Alberta Innovates family of colours. Colours other than those indicated in this chart should not be used in Alberta Innovates materials. * Gradients When using gradients, use the gradients of the Alberta Innovates agency icons to ensure overall consistency. Things to remember: Avoid lighter tone of identity colors for text, especially for Power Point Presentation or online viewing. Spot Colors Whenever possible, use the agency colours as the main colours. If secondary colours are required, choose colours within this chart. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 10 6. Photography 6.1 Photographic Elements Alberta Innovates is an organization that prides itself on its people. Photos should be used in materials to reflect the importance of human relationships and talents to the success of Alberta’s research and innovation system. There are three basic rules that determine whether a photo can be used in an Alberta Innovatesproduced material: 1. Photos must be about Alberta. 2. Stock photos are discouraged. If used, the contract of use must be kept on file. 3. Where possible, photos should include people and/or people interacting with technology, preferably, made-in-Alberta technology. ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 PAGE 11 7. Alberta Innovates 7.1 Introduction This is the primary logo for Alberta Innovates and should be used when representing the organization as a whole. The preference is to use this logo instead of multiple Alberta Innovates agency logos. For example, the Alberta Innovates logo should be used when a material or piece of communication comes from more than one agency. Similarly, the Alberta Innovates logo should be used when the material or communication originates on behalf of Alberta Innovates as a whole and not a specific agency. Agency logos should be used for targeted and stakeholder audiences while the Alberta Innovates umbrella logo is more suited to general public audiences. 7.3 Black and White (for exceptions only) 7.2 Colour Pantone 312C Pantone 431C Full colour application 96C/0M/11Y/0K 0R/170G/210B 15C/0M/0Y/60K 95R/106G/114B Black application Pantone 132C Pantone 147C 0C/28M/100Y/30K 187R/141G/11B 0C/28M/100Y/56K 95R/106G/114B Greyscale application EXCEPTION ONLY Two colour reverse application Pantone 152C Pantone 167C Pantone 168C John Smith 0C/51M/100Y/1K Manager 243R/144G/29B Division Name 0C/60M/100Y/17K 192R/80G/23B 0C/57M/100Y/59K 110R/51G/25B 6th fl, Park Plaza 10611 - 98 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2P7 Tel 780-427-9281 Fax 780-415-9485 Cell 780-868-5664 Reverse application Pantone 376C Pantone 377C Pantone 371C john.smith@albertainnovates.ca 50C/0M/100Y/0K 119R/184G/0B www.albertainnovates.ca 45C/0M/100Y/24K 113R/149G/0B 43C/0M/100Y/56K 79R/111G/25B Funded by the Government of Alberta Business card ALBERTA INNOVATES VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES NOVEMBER 2011 Pantone 512C Pantone 669C 50C/100M/15Y/10K 76C/78M/0Y/47K 135R/33G/117B 54R/44G/102B PAGE 12 8. Examples These samples show how the logos are to be incorporated on a variety of print and electronic applications. Because the logo identifies Alberta Innovates and its agencies as the source of the material, it should always be placed where it is prominent and recognizable. However, it is important to consult the guidelines or contact Advanced Education and Technology to ensure the logos are incorporated properly.
