of!bigger!and!more!powerful!data!centers.!Many!companies!cannot!meet!this!challenge!costE
effectively!inEhouse,!and!are!therefore!increasingly!resorting!to!outsourcing!operations!to!larger!and!
centralized!data!centers!around!the!world.!However,!while!they!support!the!virtual!world!and!the!
amorphous!cloud,!data!centers!exist!in!the!real!world.!One!of!the!main!challenges!they!face!is!
sourcing!clean,!reliable,!and!affordable!electricity.!This!is!critical,!as!the!power!grid!has!become!the!

analysis!will!happen!in!real!time!(or!close!to!realEtime),!particularly!in!industries!where!the!data!
become!useless!if!not!analyzed!and!acted!upon!immediately.!!

A!few!examples!help!to!highlight!this!trend.!Weather!forecasting!is!becoming!increasingly!granular!
and!extremely!data!intensive,!with!the!need!for!highly!accurate!and!granular!forecasts.!The!electric!
power!grid!is!on!the!verge!of!getting!‘smart’!with!the!ability!of!millions!E!if!not!billions!E!of!devices!to!
respond!to!nodal!market!signals!and!localized!grid!conditions!in!real!time.!Medical!research!is!also!
increasingly!relying!on!supercomputing!capability,!and!other!industries!are!also!experiencing!similar!
gains.!But!this!dynamic!is!only!just!getting!started.!A!brief!overview!of!two!examples!–!weather!
forecasting!and!power!grid!management!–!will!serve!to!highlight!the!value!of!realEtime!analytics,!the!

Weather!forecasting!is!one!field!that!benefits!greatly!from!the!ability!to!process!increasingly!larger!
data!sets!more!quickly.!All!of!the!world’s!major!weather!services!are!continuously!working!to!create!
higher!resolution!weather!predictions!(more!locally!accurate),!and!to!look!out!further!into!the!future,!
as!far!out!as!30!days.!!

As!a!consequence,!these!institutions!are!making!big!bets!on!supercomputing.!The!U.S.!National!
Oceanic!and!Atmospheric!Administration!(NOAA)!announced!in!January!of!this!year!an!investment!
