Grant Wood AEA’s Creative Services is now offering reduced
pricing on Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display communication books due to the increased volume ordered last year.
New PODD Printing Request Forms have been developed to
reflect this pricing. GWAEA SLPs will find the new form on the
Speech Lounge. District staff interested in obtaining a PODD
communication book for an individual student should contact
the SLP assigned to their building to access the necessary
Creative Services request form.
Creative Services worked with Julie Freed, GWAEA speechlanguage pathologist, to develop the originals we use to print
each of the PODDs offered on the request form. All the PODDs
are offered in a preschool or school-age version. Pages were
chosen to reflect a general range of students. If you receive
a PODD and you find you need or want pages that are
different or more specific for your student, please request
them as custom pages. PODD pages will come to you printed
front-to-back and laminated; you will need to do the trimming
and construction of the book.
Some deviations from the standard book can be requested. PODDs can be printed at any percentage of the original
size at the same cost of the standard PODD. When ordering a
reduced-size PODD, it is important to determine binding, the
margin needed on the binding edge, and trimming.
The background can be changed from the normal gray to
another color, but these will be charged as custom pages due

Kathleen Goslinga, GWAEA media assistant, provides a
professional development session for teachers at Nixon
Elementary, Cedar Rapids School District, on the Iowa AEA
Online resource CultureGrams, Oct. 19, 2012.
Grant Wood AEA and Iowa’s Area Education Agencies provide support
for a variety of online educational resources. These online resources have
experienced an increase in usage by buildings in the Grant Wood AEA service area.
Iowa AEA Online (www.iowaaeaonline.org) offers 13 online resources
that are provided free of charge to teachers and students across the state
through an initiative of Iowa’s Area Education Agencies.
In addition to the resources of Iowa AEA Online, Grant Wood AEA offers
three additional resources for schools in our service area. They are EBSCOhost, FollettShelf and netTrekker. (www.gwaea.org/media/electronic.html)
For assistance accessing these resources, contact your building’s teacher
librarian. If you would like professional development assistance with the
online resources or to schedule an inservice in your building, contact the
Media Center at Grant Wood AEA, 319-399-6700 or 800-332-8488.

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
Online resources experience a “jump” in usage
by Charlotte Haddy
GWAEA Media Center
Supervisor
Did you know that in Australia about 88 percent of Australians live in urban areas, mostly
in coastal cities? Australia is also
the world’s driest inhabited continent and there are more kangaroos
than people.
This information is just a tiny
snippet of the vast array of information available in Culture Grams
an online resource that was a new
addition to the Iowa AEA Online
offerings in 2011-2012.
What began eight years ago
with a few modest resources, has
grown to 13 online resources one
of which is CultureGrams. All are
provided free of charge to teachers and students across the state
through an initiative of the Iowa
Area Education Agencies.
In addition to the Iowa AEA
Online Resources, Grant Wood
AEA offers three additional resources for schools in our service
area. They are EBSCOhost,
FollettShelf and netTrekker.
Use of the online resources
has been fairly consistent since
2008. In 2011-2012 the use
exceeded anyone and everyone’s expectations by increasing
544%. We like to think of it as
the “jump.”
This dramatic increase could be
attributed to the following:
• An increased focus on the
integration of the online resources into the classroom
by media staff and technology consultants.
– Every district and many
non-public schools have
received training or support in the use of the
online resources.
– Districts that received
planned activities from a
member of the Media
Center staff or technology
consultant saw an increase
in most online resources
while others stayed steady.
– In 2011-2012, every
district saw an increase
in at least one or more of
the online resources.
– In 2011-2012, Encyclopedia Britannica replaced
World Book as the encyclopedia option and use of
this product skyrocketed.
Some buildings saw over
a 1000% increase in use.
• The online resources are introduced and promoted in C21.
• Since 2005, many issues of
info@ and The Linker have
featured articles on one or
more of the online resources.
Last year, Iowa AEAs spent
$1,256,621 on the Iowa AEA
Online resources. If every school
in Iowa had contracted directly
with the individual companies,
the cost would have been approximately $17,452,000.
For 2012-2013, Grant Wood
AEA’s cost for the Iowa AEA Online Resources and the additional
resources of EBSCO and netTrekker is $288,756.75. Titles for
e-Books found in FollettShelf are
purchased separately.
The online resources provide
educators and students in the
Grant Wood service area with access to quality resources that have
been reviewed by a committee,
are safe and age-appropriate.
Iowa AEA Online is a virtual library that provides no-cost access to 13 high-quality, web-based resources for
accredited public and non-public PreK-12 schools. Students and staff have access at school and at home.

Nixon Elementary increases use of online resources, materials usage
by Valerie Taylor Hill
GWAEA Public
Information Specialist
Educators at Nixon
Elementary in the Cedar
Rapids School District
experienced a 1,000%
increase in their building’s
online resources usage
during the 2011-2012
school year.
At the same time, the
building experienced a
428% increase for materials
usage from the Media Center at Grant Wood AEA.
Dee Crozier, principal
at Nixon Elementary, explained that professional
development activities facilitated by Grant Wood
AEA provided support for
these increases. “During the
2011-2012 year, our teachers were involved with a
book study focusing on
Daily 5, which helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and
working independently,”
Crozier said.
“Reading was our biggest concern and additional resources were needed
to support our work with
students,” she elaborated.
Through a visit to Grant
Wood AEA and staff from
Grant Wood AEA coming out to the building, the
teachers received professional development on
available online resources
and how these resources
support students.”
“Through these activities, the teachers learned
what was available,” she
continued. “The remainder
of the year was spent incor-
porating the online resources as part of our building’s
professional development
activities.”
“The 2012-2013 school
year is our second year of
training on the online resources. Grant Wood AEA
is bringing the training to
our building before school
so our staff can continue
to learn about available resources. It’s important to
find the time to share information about these free
resources.”
The online resources include those of Iowa AEA
Online as well as additional
resources offered by Grant
Wood AEA.
Iowa AEA Online (www.
iowaaeaonline.org) is a
virtual library that provides no-cost access to 13
high-quality, web-based resources for accredited public and non-public preK-12
schools. Students and staff
have access at school and at
home. (See article above.)
Iowa AEA Online is
funded and provided by
Iowa’s Area Education
Agencies.
In addition to the
resources of Iowa AEA
Online, Grant Wood AEA
offers three additional resources for schools in our
service area. These resources include EBSCOhost;
FollettShelf and netTrekker.
Kamber Boeckmann, a
first-grade teacher at Nixon

to help students build fluency. “I use the video resources for many social-emotional videos. The resources

“I love the tag readers
and the listening library,”
Boeckmann continued. “I
plan to come to Grant Wood
AEA soon to check out materials for the year. I used
them all the time last year.”
Cassandra Wood-Jun, a
fifth-grade teacher, shared
that the online resources
provide students with
access to resources.
“Currently, the resources
are providing support for
my classroom’s reading
groups and support for social studies.”
Kathleen Goslinga,
GWAEA media assistant,
said, “The online resources
provide districts cost effective, online educational
tools for all grade levels.
Access is available 24/7
and provides a safe learning
environment for students.”

The Grant Wood AEA PEP Program: A resource for parents and educators
The Grant Wood AEA
Parent-Educator Partnership
Program is the agency’s
name for the state-level program known as the Parent
Educator Connection (PEC)
Program.
Initiated in 1985, the
program began as a way to
involve parents in the education of their children with
Individualized Education
Programs (IEPs).
The GWAEA PEP Program is located on the main
level of the Grant Wood
AEA 33rd Avenue Facility at
1120 33rd Ave S.W., in
Cedar Rapids.
Our Mission
The mission of the PEP
Program is to promote
strong home-school partnerships, which assist chil-
dren and youth to do well in
school accomplishing IEP

AEA Parent Educator Partnership Program at 319399-6702 or 800-332-8488.
Why would someone
call PEP?
PEP offers information
for parents, educators and
school administrators:
Parents:
• How to prepare for
your child’s next IFSP
or IEP meeting
• Parent/student rights
and responsibilities
• Transition
• Information on services
and support groups

conferences
• Resources avail-
able to check out

talk with
Educators and School
Administrators:
• Conferences, support groups, workshops or newsletters
• Someone to work with
or support a parent
• Resources on specific disabilities or disability awareness
and understanding
• Brochures regarding
PEP, Parent Rights,
and tools to prepare
for IEP meetings
Resources in the PEP
Resource Library
The Parent Educator Partnership (PEP) Resource Library has books,
videos, DVDs, magazines,
and handouts on a variety
of specific disabilities and
disability topics for parents
and educators. The library
also includes a children’s
section with books and a
few videos where the topic
of the story is about disability, the main character has
a disability, or the resource
is information on a specific
disability.
The PEP Library also
contains books, videos, and
DVDs on parenting any
child. Typical parenting topics such as normal growth
and development timelines,

Instructional media/school technology
New and improved library media centers
Norman Borlaug Elementary –
Iowa City School District
The summer of 2012 saw the closing of 81-year-old
Roosevelt Elementary School in Iowa City and the opening of Norman Borlaug Elementary. During Roosevelt’s
last year, Teacher-Librarian Anne Marie Kraus planned and
implemented the transition of the library and computer lab.
While vigorously weeding the Roosevelt collection, Kraus
systematically ordered a sizeable new collection. “The Borlaug library is remarkable in its breadth and depth. We had
the good fortune of merging the longevity of Roosevelt with
the currency of Borlaug,” observes Kraus. Planning that
merger required some careful collection development, measuring, mapping, and number-crunching.”
The results are exciting to use, and beautiful to look at,
in its stunning setting, with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The construction crew dubbed the library “the tree house,”
referring to the second-floor panorama of trees and nature
on three sides.
The library and all the classrooms are equipped with a
SMART Board, projector, document camera, and speakers,
as well as computers for student use. Placing this technology
in every teaching area allows classrooms to move forward
with 21st Century technology skills.
“It’s been a lot of work, but our efforts are now coming
to fruition,” says Kraus. “We had a beautiful dedication
ceremony, and we are building a new community here.”
Anamosa Middle School – Anamosa School District
The library at the new Anamosa Middle School is named the Walt Fortney Learning Center. Walt Fortney was a leader
in the middle school concept and a middle school administrator in Anamosa.
Highland School District
The library was opened during the 2011-2012 school year and is about three times bigger than the old library. Students
enjoy the additional space and the natural light that comes through the myriad of windows installed in the northeast corner
of the library. The lab of 24 computers allows entire classes to take advantage of online resources, and the recent transition
to an accessible online catalog has brought the library renovation full circle. The library serves grades 6 through 12.
Vernon Middle School – Marion Independent School District
Vernon Middle School received a brand new library as well as a new circulation system this year. Students are enjoying
the much larger space and are particularly favoring the big comfy seats for reading and studying.
Washington High School –
Washington School District
Washington Community Schools opened a new high
school at the start of the 2012-2013 school year. Included
in this new facility is also a brand new library. The library
is centrally located in the new building making it a popular spot to hang out. Washington High School rolled out
1:1 computers to all 9-12 students this year as well. WHS
now has a full-time teacher librarian and 1:1 coordinator
to help manage and facilitate the use of the Mac Book Pro
computers along with promoting information literacy in
the library.
