Course Purpose:
Many historians, scholars, and practitioners regard the community college as the most unique
characteristic of American higher education. There can be no debate that the growth and development
of these colleges has altered the postsecondary system of education in this country and redefined the
concept of an educated person.
The purpose of this course is to help you gain a better understanding of the development and
organization of this educational institution, its accomplishments, its problems, and its future. You
should know the characteristics of the institution and its units, be acquainted with its historical origins
and its contemporary role, and be able to describe and make judgments about the students, faculty,
staff, and administration by the end of the semester.
Although many of you already know much about a particular community college and a particular
division in which you have worked, the comprehensive picture of the institution gained through the
class activities will increase your effectiveness as a faculty member and/or administrator.
Course Organization:
The material in this course is organized into seven units. Each unit deals with the identifying
characteristics of the community college and with its segmental role vis-à-vis other postsecondary
education institutions. In addition to this general syllabus, each unit will have additional instructional
activities and materials to assist in the learning process.
This is not a lecture course; we are not just covering material. It is the responsibility of each person in
the class—student and instructor—to contribute both from the literature and her/his experiences so that
our portrait of the community college is as comprehensive as possible. Certain instruction activities are
structured to facilitate this acquisition of knowledge.
Four of the six days will be spent on community college campuses focusing on course areas. This will
give you a ―feel‖ for these institutions. All different, but still the same.
