Unidrive
Overview
The incredibly versatile Unidrive was the first
universal AC drive capable of providing V/Hz, open and
closed loop vector, servo and regenerative control in
every unit. It combines all five AC drive technologies so
you only have to learn one drive, support one drive and
inventory one drive.
For quick setup of basic applications, the Unidrive’s
most common parameters are arranged in one concise
menu. Hundreds of user-configurable functions
separated into 20 logical menus provide quick setup
for advanced application. For positioning, ratio control,
camming and multi-axis systems, plug-in option
modules easily extend the Unidrive’s capabilities.
—Multiple Motor
—Open Loop V/Hz
High horsepower Unidrives cover the range from
200 to 1600 HP. The 300 amp power module and
control pod (the “brain”) are available as components.
They are also available as a packaged drive solution that
includes fusing and a disconnect. (See our Packaged
Drive Section, pages 120-123 and 128-133.)
With the Unidrive’s extensive selection of
communication, application, feedback and I/O modules,
you can easily upgrade the performance of your drive.
Yet, it is simple to configure by using the drive keypad,
a remote keypad (CTKP), or UniSoft, our Windows
based drive set-up tool. You can tailor each Unidrive
to be the drive you want when you want it.

Regen Applications
Unidrive
The Unidrive is suited for use with AC brushless
servo motors. Servo control is ideal for applications
requiring load transfer to and from any position, at any
speed. The Unidrive is designed for both stand-alone
and multi-axis system applications.
—Hoist
In regen mode, two standard Unidrives operate
together to provide full four-quadrant control of an AC
motor. The system consists of two basic sub-systems,
one being a Unidrive operating in any of its standard
operating modes (open loop, vector or servo), and the
other is a Unidrive operating in its regenerative mode.
The link between the two sub-systems is simply the DC
bus connections. In this mode, the Unidrive is capable
of either supplying power to the DC bus of the Unidrive
controlling the motor or removing power from the DC
bus of the Unidrive controlling the motor and returning
it back to the power line.
For more information, refer to the Packaged Drive
Section on pages 134-135.

Unidrive
Motor Feedback
Unidrives have a built-in encoder port to readily
accept motor rotational feedback. There are three
option modules available to complement or extend the
range of motor speed / position feedback capabilities.
Each of these modules creates a simulated encoder
output (UD51 repeats) as either line driven quadrature
channels or as frequency / direction signals to facilitate
follower applications. All differential outputs conform
to EIA485 voltage and drive specifications. Wire
connections on these modules are made using 16 pin
removable terminal strips.
and / or position by using the sin/cos type of encoder.*
It supports single and multi-turn (up to 4096 revolution)
encoders. Resolution exceeding 1 million counts /
revolution is available using a 1024 line sin/cos encoder.
In addition, the Unidrive can interrogate the encoder for
its initial position upon power-up using simple 2-wire
RS485 communications. This provides offering absolute
position characteristics needed for many positioning
applications.

Unidrive Digital Lock
Motors with Feedback
Second Encoder Module (UD51)
This module provides the Unidrive with the ability
to monitor speed and / or position of an additional
encoder. Typically this module would be used to enable
the Unidrive to follow a master drive or external
frequency in a digital lock application with adjustable
ratio control (0.001 to 4.000). Maximum frequency
output:
210kHz for quadrature signals (differential)
420kHz for frequency and direction signals (differential)
Unidrive Digital Lock
Electronic Lineshaft
Resolver Feedback Module (UD53)
This module enables the Unidrive to control the
speed and position of motors outfitted with resolvers.
It also creates a differential marker channel output
synchronized to the zero crossing of the resolver
rotation. Because of their ruggedness, resolvers are
often used in hot, demanding environments.
Hi-Resolution Encoder Module (UD52)
This high-resolution encoder feedback module
enables the Unidrive to extend the accuracy of speed

Precision Analog Input Module (UD78)
Input / Output Modules
This large option module (LOM) is designed to
provide a differential high speed analog input with
enhanced precision. It is typically used in servo
applications when the Unidrive is being commanded
by an analog signal from an external position controller
or CNC. The precise analog input has low offset and
deadband characteristics. Using an external 24VDC
backup, the module provides absolute positioning by
tracking the encoder position during outages. The
RS232/485 channel is optically isolated and supports
UniSoft and SystemWise programs.
Extended I/O Module (UD50)
This module enables the drive system designer
and the Unidrive to solve more complex applications
by providing additional inputs and outputs that the
Unidrive can access locally. These connections on a
16-pin removable terminal strip are programmable
using UniSoft or the drive’s keypad. Their assignments
are stored within the drive’s memory.
Resolution: (closed loop): Infinite (fractional bits accumulated)

Cloning Module (UD55)
The Cloning Module can copy and store up to eight
drive parameter data sets. No PC or other external
connection is needed to download or upload a set of
parameters to / from the drive and the cloning module.
Using the cloning module minimizes drive programming
time for OEMs setting up multiple drives with the
same or similar programs. It’s also ideal for transferring
parameters between drives for replacement purposes.

Applications Module (UD70)
The applications module (UD70) contains a highspeed microprocessor which provides a low-cost facility
for a system designer to write application specific
programs without needing a PLC or other stand-alone
controller. The module is programmed (via the RS232
port) using our Control Techniques SyPT (System
Programming Toolkit) that complies with IEC 611313 Ladder / Function Block or DPL (Drive Programming
Language).
The module uses a dual port RAM to interface
to the drive’s main processor, providing intimate
high-speed bi-directional access. It can read and modify
any parameter within the drive, enabling customized
real-time calculations under a multi-tasking run-time
environment. The Intel i960 32-bit RISC processor and
256K of user program FLASH memory (equivalent to
>2000 lines of ladder logic or basic instruction code)
provide a powerful base for a designer to accomplish
complex algorithms for demanding time-critical
process control.
The optically isolated RS485 port serves as a
communication port for our CTIU operator interface
units. It is fully configurable, supporting many
communication modes including an ANSI 2 or 4-wire
protocol at data rates up to 19.2kbaud. A Modbus
protocol with RTU and ASCII slave modes is also
available.
Application Software

Fan and Pump Duty Assist Control
The Duty-Assist control is an effective method
of controlling multiple pumps or fans in parallel to
maintain the required process demand. Pumps and
fans are often used in parallel banks to avoid motor
overload, guarantee security of supply through system
redundancy, reduce running costs due to system
load cycles, and provide a wide range of control and
flexibility.
The system consists of a ‘Duty’ Drive and assist
starters. The assist starters can be of any type, (e.g,
Contactor, Wye-Delta, Auto-Transformer, Soft Starter or
Inverter); the choice is dependent on the system limits.
The Duty drive can control one dedicated motor (Fixed
Duty), or with additional external switchgear could be
selected to control other motors within the parallel
configuration (Flexible Duty).

RS232 / 485 Serial
Communications
Module (UD71)
UniSoft is a complimentary Windows based drive
configuration tool designed to enable the complete
control and display of all parameters within a Unidrive.
Functions within UniSoft allow data to be uploaded,
viewed and saved, or retrieved from disk, modified
and printed. It can be used off-line in the office or
on-line on the plant floor. UniSoft communicates with
the Unidrive via the computer’s serial port to a UD7X
communications module using a communications cable
(CTD-PC-232-XXX). (XXX = ft.)
This module
provides the Unidrive
with an optically
isolated serial
communication
channel. All drive
parameters can be
accessed through either
the RS232 or RS485
ports, which support baud rates up to 19.2kbaud. The
drive can act as a slave on a network and transmit
data when interrogated by a master controller, such as
a PC or PLC. The RS85 channel supports a multi-drop
communication network with up to 15 drives on one
link without repeaters.

Universal Keypad (CTKP)
Encoder Feedback Connectors
(UDBV1 & UDBV3)
The CTKP Universal Keypad is
an ideal maintenance tool for use
with CT’s digital drives (SE, GP,
VTC, Unidrive, Mentor II, Quantum
III) and option modules (UD7X,
MD series). Five navigation keys
designed to mimic the Unidrive
keypad and plain text parameter
descriptions make the CTKP easy to
use for viewing and modifying drive data.* The keypad
is designed for hand-held or panel mounting. The IP65
rating, screw-down terminals and stress relief for cable
connections assure a rugged and robust design.
This connector is used to simplify motor feedback
wiring by “breaking out” the 15 pin D-connector
signals to screw-type terminals. The 8-position terminal
connector (UDBV3) can be used in closed loop vector
mode for encoder feedback. The 15-position terminal
connector (UDBV1) is used in servo mode because it
accepts both the encoder and commutation signals.
These connectors provide a convenient method for
motor feedback using simple screw terminals rather
than requiring tedious soldering.
A RS485 cable with a DB9-P female connector on
the Unidrive / UD7X end and dressed wires on the CTKP
end is available for ease of connection (order Catalog
