Lights, camera and action! This weekend saw Robert Parker and Co. jet into London to host the inaugural Wine Advocate ‘Matter of taste’ event at the Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square. With over 700 wines on show from more than 620 wineries – all rated 90 points or more – this was a near unparalleled tasting both in terms of quality AND range, and everyone from the causal enthusiast to the most hardened oenophile found themselves well catered for. Not even the best efforts of TFL (who closed the District and Circle and therefore the main access to Sloane Square) or the cold, grey, wet weather deterred the crowds who jostled for position until the door were flung open at midday, and it was a welcome sight to see the Wine Advocate team mingling with the throng – a nice touch given their packed schedule of masterclasses. A special mention must also go to Jeb Dunnock, WA’s Rhone (amongst other things) reviewer who took the time and effort to stop and talk at some length – he even volunteered to help out on tasting table but was then swallowed up by the crowd. Next time Jeb, next time…. With over 25 wines on show Justerini & Brooks were well represented at the tasting, and even amongst such an incredible selection of wines on show from across the globe there were some clear stand outs. Lucien Crochet’s brilliant value 2012 Sancerre Le Chene (92pts) was bright, mineral driven, zesty and intense, whilst Teunta Terre Nerre’s 2011 Caldera Sottana (92pts) from the slopes of Etna was the epitome of poise, balance and ethereal elegance - Burgundy-esque but without the price tag. With a little air, Robert Chevillon’s 2011 Nuits St Geroges Pruliers (92pts) blossomed into a real beauty, developing admirable complexity for a wine so young and is showing clear potential to both age and improve. Azelia’s 2007 Barolo Bricco Fiasco (95pts) really stole the show on the Italian table, showing the opulence of the vintage whilst still remaining bright, aromatic and focused. By 6pm the last people vanished out of the door followed soon after by the Wine Advocate team, leaving us with only one question. Will we see them again next year…? We shall wait with baited breath. Wines In Bond have not had UK Duty and VAT paid on them. Most of our wines are available for purchase under bond, as fine wines often need to be laid down in order to allow them to mature. Many clients choose therefore to store them in our bonded warehouse and pay the tax as and when they wish to get the wines delivered. Please note that Wines purchased In Bond can be exported to non-EU countries without the need for Duty and Vat to be paid. If you wish to get wines delivered for drinking, the duty and VAT will need to be paid. The wine is then said to be duty paid. All taxes must be paid in order for us to be authorised to ship or deliver wine (unless the wine is bonded and being moved to another bonded warehouse or being shipped directly outside of the EU.) En Primeur (EP), or "Wine Futures" is the purchase of wines before they are bottled and shipped to the UK. En Primeur wines, which can only be purchased Under Bond, offer you the first opportunity to purchase a given wine. We offer wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy, The Loire, The Rhone, Germany, and Spain En Primeur.
