Media visits to the Finger Lakes have escalated in recent years but the 2015 season got off to an unusually early start. The growing popularity of the region as a vacation destination, coupled with the opening of the Corning Museum of Glass’ new addition, prompted the CVB to jump into action a month ahead of schedule to accommodate writer interest. In several cases that meant opening and staffing outside of regular hours, but there were immediate opportunities to promote Chemung County the group just didn’t want to turn down. The Chemung Chamber and its CVB are working with the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau and the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as regional initiatives with Finger Lakes Wine Country, to coordinate additional press visits for the season, including a week-long tour the first week of June. Partnering with other tourism offices has enabled the southern Finger Lakes to attract top-tier writers which otherwise may have been out of reach for the individual counties, as well as to maximize tourism dollars. Trolley Tours to Launch in July The Chemung Valley History Museum, TLC Limo and the Chemung Chamber have been busy readying for the return of the annual Trolley into Twain Country tours next month. A one-of-a-kind experience found only in Mark Twain Country, the one-hour guided tours will depart from the lobby of the Chemung Valley History Museum on the hour from 10:00 - 2:00 on Tuesday through Friday and 10:00-1:00 on Saturday throughout July and August. For full details, go to www.marktwaincountry.com. Trolley Master Mark Delgrosso. CVB Tours Twain Country Seventeen members of the Chemung Chamber’s Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) recently took part in a familiarization tour to gain first-hand knowledge of local tourism attractions. The group participates in such a tour each spring to help local tourism professionals keep abreast of new attractions and updates before the arrival of summer visitors. Stops on this year’s tour included: Live Well Upstate Center for Natural Health, Turtle Leaf Café, Castle on Glen, Tanglewood Nature Center & Museum, GCP Discount Liquors & Wines and Frazzles Frozen Yogurt. TLC Limo provided the trolley to transport the group. Live Well Upstate to Open Region’s First Floatation Center Imagine floating effortlessly like a cork while each muscle in your body lets go and your mind and body get a chance to reset. Thanks to Live Well Upstate, both locals and visitors will be able to find such an experience in Elmira when the natural medicine clinic opens the region’s first float therapy center this summer. According to owner and health practitioner, Seamus Kennedy, float therapy has been described as the ultimate relaxation experience. “Users lay in a tank filled The float tank at Live Well Upstate. with 850 lbs. of Epsom salt dissolved in 10 inches of skin-temperature water and need no exertion to stay afloat,” he explained. If that’s not enticing enough, Kennedy added that users may opt for light and music in the spacious tank and that “an hour of float therapy is comparable to four hours of sleep.” Live Well Upstate also provides massage therapy, acupuncture and nutrition guidance. For more information on its services, including floatation therapy, call 607-733-3373 or go to www.livewellupstate.com. 3 Member News County Clerk Reminds Residents to “Renew Local” Chemung County Clerk Katie Hughes is reminding residents that they can play an active part in keeping their hard-earned dollars working in our community by renewing local. Many people do not realize that every time the State mails you that little pink envelope to renew your vehicle registration, they offer you only three options. Each of the State-provided options sends your money off to Albany and then you have to wait and wait to get back your registration sticker and card. When you use any of the options the State offers, Chemung County doesn’t receive a single dollar, not one dollar, all of your money goes directly to the State. Hughes says your best bet to renew your registration is at our local License Bureau. The recently remodeled License Bureau, located in the Chemung County Human Resources Center at 425 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira, has a drop box located outside the building as well as an express renewal line for registration and driver’s license renewals to move customers through the Bureau as quickly as possible. Residents can also mail their renewals to the License Bureau at: Chemung County License Bureau P.O. Box 588 Elmira, NY 14902-0588 “Did you know every time you send your vehicle registration back to the State in those pink envelopes Chemung County loses 12.7% of the vehicle registration fee?” said Hughes. “I want to keep our money working for us in Chemung County and you will receive your registration back within a few days, not a few weeks. When purchasing a new car, ask your dealership to complete the registration transaction in Chemung County as well. Every dollar from renewals or new registrations that are kept in Chemung County helps to keep our taxes as low as possible,” added Hughes.
