ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 2 TEKS Update • The State Board of Education (SBOE) has authority for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). • Typically, the SBOE reviews/revises one or more subject areas each year. • Review and revision process takes between one to two years from start to finish. • The SBOE is expected to approve a streamlining process for science and social studies. English and Spanish Language Arts and Reading TEKS Review • The English and Spanish language arts and reading TEKS review committees will convene for their next face-to-face meeting in mid-February. • At the February meeting, the committee will review informal feedback submitted to TEA, ensure vertical alignment, meet with the SBOE-appointed expert reviewers, and finalize their recommendations for revisions to the TEKS. The review committee revisions include • aligning the Prekindergarten Guidelines with kindergarten TEKS, • replacing out-of-date references, • clarifying outcomes to reflect current research and best practices in early childhood education, and • sequencing the outcomes to reflect a developmentally appropriate continuum of instruction and learning. HB 2398 (TEC § 29.0915 (a-3)) - A school district shall offer additional counseling and may not refer a student to truancy court if the truancy is a result of being homeless. HB 679 (TGC § 2306.1101) – Mandates a statewide study on homeless youth (including migrant youth) and report to Legislature to determine number of homeless youth, needs, current programs, funding, etc. SB 1494 (TEC § 25.007) –Identifies numerous actions to ease schools transitions for students experiencing foster care and homelessness.
