Supplier Award from
Porsche to Schaeffler
German luxury carmaker Porsche has awarded The Schaeffler
Group its 2011 Supplier Award in recognition of the continued
successful collaboration between the two companies.
For decades, Schaeffler and Porsche
have cooperated on a number of
successful projects. The most
important components in Porsche’s
latest variable valve control system,
the Porsche VarioCam Plus, were
amongst those Schaeffler products
praised by Porsche during the award
ceremony.
Prof. Peter Pleus, President of
Schaeffler Group Automotive,
passed the 2011 Supplier
Award on to Schaeffler’s Engine
Systems Business team based in
Herzogenaurach, Germany. “We
are very proud of this award,” said
Prof. Peter Pleus, “because it is
proof of our innovative capabilities
and manufacturing quality, which
are based on the achievements
of our creative, quality-conscious
employees.”
Various rolling bearing solutions
used in the Porsche 356 have
laid the foundations for the longstanding partnership between
the two companies. Porsche
was also one of Schaeffler’s first
customers as Schaeffler began
to produce its novel, LuK-branded
diaphragm spring clutches in the
mid-1960s. It was also during this
decade that Schaeffler built up its
expertise in combustion engines by
developing high precision valve train
components. These components
were first tested in the Porsche 917
Le Mans racing car.
In the mid-1980s, as Porsche
launched its technologically
advanced Porsche 959 model,
Schaeffler was again selected as
one of the company’s high-tech
development partners. One of these
developments was Schaeffler’s
hydraulic chain tensioner. This new

component proved to be extremely
effective in what was considered
the most innovative sports car of its
time.
With Schaeffler’s support, Porsche
is also setting the benchmark in
variable valve train technology.
Switchable bucket tappets and
camshaft phasing units are key
components of the Porsche VarioCam
Plus valve train system, a highly
efficient, powerful engine technology.
Examples of successful collaboration
projects between Porsche and
Schaeffler in engine, transmission
and chassis systems are
numerous. Schaeffler components
for conventional drive trains for
internal combustion engines now
also includes hybrid modules. More
recently, Schaeffler has expanded
its innovative range of products for
electric vehicles.
“The collaboration with Porsche has
been very fruitful for both parties,
in terms of development and
manufacturing,” commented Prof.
Peter Pleus. “Schaeffler and Porsche
are borne by a spirit of innovation
and by the highest standards of
quality. We are therefore very proud
to receive the 2011 Porsche Supplier
Award, which is an incentive for
our team to keep on developing
pioneering innovations for the future.”

Launch of a new
super power
Sept/Oct 2011 PTR 9
A new, heavy duty specialist chain hits the UK. Donghua
Limited, the UK distribution centre for one of the world’s
biggest chain manufacturers, is launching their Heavy
Super Power (HSP) chain this autumn. Aimed initially at
the agriculture market, the HSP chain can be used in any
industrial sector with harsh and aggressive applications
where customers depend on reliability and long-life from
their chains.
Managing Director, Bob Wellsbury,
said: “I’m very excited about
introducing our latest product to
the UK market. It’s an incredibly
tough chain with ultimate tensile
strength up to 50 per cent higher
than DIN standard chains.” He
added: “Very few manufacturers
produce this type of chain,
and we undertook a series of
technical product tests before
releasing the chain to the market.
I think people will be pleasantly
surprised at how well our HSP
chain compares, especially when
it costs 30 per cent less than
comparable chains!”
Because Donghua has improved
the roller crush strength of this
chain they feel they are now able
to compete with similar super
heavy duty chains. The HSP chain
is produced using state of the
art iso-thermal heat treatments
to give consistency, has widewasted design plates to give
extreme fatigue life and has high
interference fit between the pins
and the plates.
The HSP chain is available in
ANSI 50 to ANSI 200 sizes.

Synthetic lubricants improve
equipment durability in
construction and mining
The latest ’synthetic’ lubricant technology is increasingly
helping to deliver enhanced performance and contribute
towards greater equipment availability in a variety of
industrial processes.
Every maintenance engineer wants
to be certain a lubricant does the
basic job of providing protection
to a piece of machinery’s vital
components and moving parts.
The lubricant must reduce friction,
as well as protect against acids,
deposits, water contamination and
wear in a range of harsh operating
conditions.
The construction industry, for
example, relies on lubricants
to keep heavy-duty equipment
working in extreme temperatures,
in wet conditions and over long
periods. Equipment failure, and
the associated downtime, can
result in significant costs and loss
of revenue.
In recent years, however, the
development of synthetic
technology has led to the
production of lubricants that can
offer greater reliability, enhance
durability and even reduce fuel
consumption.
Recently, Consorcio Camargo
Correa (CCC), a construction
company based in Brazil, was
engaged in the construction
of a large dam in Venezuela. A
significant part of the operation
involved excavating stone from the
river that feeds the dam.
In the early stages, CCC
repeatedly found that the bucket
pins in its heavy-lift excavators
were wearing out much faster
than normal. This meant that an
increasing amount of time was
thus being spent on equipment
maintenance, slowing down the
progress of the project and adding
to the overheads.
Knowing that lubricants play a key
role in protecting vital components
such as bucket pins, CCC enlisted
the help of technical specialists
at Shell Lubricants to help find a
more durable alternative.
It is critical that lubricants and
greases are able to do their jobs
in the most arduous conditions
Shell began by dispatching a
field team to examine CCC’s
operating environment at the dam.
Noting that the machinery spent
a lot of time submersed in the
river, the team identified water
contamination as the source of
the problem.
The extreme condition had been
watering down the existing lubricant,
and the bucket pins had to be
replaced every 250 hours. Once
the ’challenge’ had been identified,
Shell’s product application
specialists worked to find a waterresistant alternative. A new grease,
Shell Gadus S3 V460 2, was
selected.
This high-performance, hightemperature grease is designed for
slow-moving, heavily loaded large
bearings subject to shock loads.
It is highly water resistant, making
it ideal for the CCC operation. The
product is based on a high-viscosity
index mineral oil and contains a
lithium-complex soap thickener.
With Shell Gadus S3 V460 2, CCC
identified several distinct operational
benefits. Excavator component life
(including the bucket pins) was
extended from 250 to 350 hours an
increase of approximately 40 per
cent. In addition, there was a noted
productivity increase thanks to the
enhanced availability of equipment
and a reduction in unscheduled
downtime.
In financial terms, the introduction
of the new grease resulted in an
estimated 28 per cent reduction in
operational costs, which equates
My... what big sprockets you have!
When FB Chain Ltd took on the
task of manufacturing conveyor
chain and sprockets to be used in
the refurbishment of a paper mill
conveyor, they ended up making
their largest sprocket ever. The
largest of two sprocket was 1
½ metres across and both had
induction hardened teeth. They
were manufactured by FB
Chain’s sister company
in Germany.
Graham Barber, FB’s conveyor
chain product manager (shown in
the picture) said “the difficulties
did not come in manufacturing the
sprockets but with the logistics
of manoeuvring them around the
factory and transporting them
to the client once they were
completed, as these sprockets
weighed over a tonne.”
Graham went on to say,
“changing sprockets can
be very time consuming
and expensive so
adding self cleaning
grooves or induction hardened
teeth which has only a minimal
impact to the price but can greatly
extend both conveyor chain and
conveyor chain sprocket life.”
FB Chain Ltd can manufacture
either conveyor chain plate
wheels or sprockets with a boss
on both sides or just one side
only. FB conveyor chain wheels are
made using specially selected
high grade materials but can
also be manufactured in Hardox
with teeth that can also be either
flame or induction hardened to
give superior results in the more
arduous applications.

to an estimated annual saving of
$3.8m (£2.3m) for CCC.
This project showed that water
resistance is an important property
for industrial lubricants. The latest
lubricant technology enables
operation not only around water,
but also under water in some
cases, such as in turbines of hydro
electricity facilities, some of which
are found 180m below water level.
In an industrial setting, it is critical
that lubricants and greases
are able to do their jobs in the
most arduous conditions without
compromising protection. For
instance, mine operators in Russia
may require a product to perform
in sub-zero conditions, while steel
manufacturers need their lubricants
to cope with temperatures in
excess of 180°C. This is where the
real science of lubricants comes
into play with the use of synthetic
components and additives, products
such as Shell Gadus can be
designed to behave a certain way
in extreme conditions, such as not
solidifying in low temperatures.
This advanced generation of
lubricants could help even more
industrial sectors deliver significant
operational benefits.

Efficient mobility solutions
at IAA Frankfurt Motor Show
The Schaeffler Group received some very prominent visitors to its exhibition stand at the
recent IAA 64th International Motor Show (15-25 September 2011) in Frankfurt, Germany.
The show itself attracted a total of more than 928,000 visitors across the 10 days.
At the opening of the show,
Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela
Merkel visited Schaeffler’s 500
metre-square stand as part of her
tour of the trade exhibition halls.
The Chancellor was welcomed
by Schaeffler Group partner
Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler, Georg
F.W. Schaeffler, Chairman of
the Supervisory Board and Dr.
Juergen M. Geissinger, President
and CEO of Schaeffler Group.
The Chancellor was able to gain
valuable insights into current
developments in energy-efficient
vehicles.
An important delegation from the
UK also visited the Schaeffler
stand. This group included
Mark Prisk, MP for Hertford
& Stortford and a minister in
the Department for Business,
Innovation and Skills, who was
welcomed onto the stand by
Richard Hall, Director & General
Manager, Automotive Division, at
Schaeffler (UK) Ltd. Mark Prisk
was introduced to a number of
key Schaeffler innovations that
help to optimise the drive train of
internal combustion engines and
to meet the demands of global
energy-efficient mobility. He was
given a guided tour of the stand
by Prof. Peter Pleus, President of
Schaeffler Group Automotive.
Schaeffler’s stand included a
number of innovative products
and solutions for the automotive
industry, including efficient drive
trains for internal combustion
engines, new components
for hybrid vehicles, as well as
advanced solutions for electric
mobility. One particularly novel
solution unveiled on the stand
was a new thermal management
module that reduces fuel
consumption and CO2 emissions
by up to 4 per cent by optimising
and controlling the temperature
of engines and transmissions, as
well as hybrid components and
batteries.
The ‘advanced Drive’ and
‘eSolutions’ concept cars
attracted special attention
on the stand. The eSolutions
demonstration vehicle showed
a large number of solutions
for future mobility including
Schaeffler’s eWheel Drive, a
wheel-hub drive for new vehicle
architecture and the eDifferential,
which enables unique driving
dynamics in electric vehicles.
The advanced Drive
demonstration vehicle showed
products that optimise the
energy efficiency of drive trains
for internal combustion engines.
The micro hybrid and the startstop function were presented
as important solutions for the
future.
Components and systems from
Schaeffler’s various brands (INA,
FAG and LuK) can be found on
vehicles of almost every major
carmaker. On average, every car
worldwide contains around 60
components from Schaeffler.

New Series of 1 mm
Pitch Timing Belt Pulleys
from SDP
A new series of 1 mm pitch timing
belt pulleys from Stock Drive
Products (SDP) (ISO 9001:2000
Registered Manufacturer)
are designed for miniature
applications. The metric pulleys,
identified as the A 6A18M...

The SLW range from linear expert
igus UK comprises a standard drylin
W slide which is adjustable via a
leadscrew for precise movements.
The latest addition to this range is
the SLW Stop-and-Go.
The drylin SLW Stop-and-Go allows
multiple carriages to be on the same
leadscrew but controlled separately,
offering a significant cost saving
to customers. To lock the carriage
into position the knob is lifted up,
this disengages the nut from the
leadscrew and the other carriages
are still able to move freely. When
the knob is released and pushed
back into the carriage, the leadscrew
nut re-engages.
The SLW range is available in
anodised aluminium or stainless
steel, and has high torsional stability
as well as being flat, compact and
completely supported. SLW systems
can be mounted for movement in
both the x- and y-axis, this is known
as the SLW cross slide. Again,
these systems are adjusted using
a trapezoidal thread and, as with
all igus drylin systems, are 100%
lubricant free and corrosion resistant.
The drylin SLW can be used in
a number of industries, such as
machine building and automation.
Additionally, the stainless steel
system, which comes with 3
options of liner – iglidur J for wet
environments, iglidur X for high
temperatures or iglidur A180 for
applications that require FDA approval
– is well-suited to applications in the
food and packaging industries.

Modified ex-stock gears
boost speed and extend life
Faster performance as well as
increased capability and service
life have been achieved by a new
drive system on the upgraded
Cavity Auto Scanning Laser
System (C-ALS®), a core product
for York-based Measurement
Device Limited (MDL). Several
of the transmission components
that complete the drive system
were supplied by R. A. Rodriguez,
including KHK spiral bevel gears.
These were speedily modified
from stock items for MDL’s use,
a service for which KHK via R.
A. Rodriguez, is now the market
leader.
C-ALS® is a miniaturised,
ruggedized 3D laser scanning
system designed to survey
remote, inaccessible voids and
cavities, safely. The motorised
2-axis scanning head ensures
a complete 360° scan covering
the entire void to a range of
150m/500 feet. Its probe
incorporates pitch-and-roll
sensors and has the option of an
internal compass. These sensors
ensure accurate orientation and
positioning of the scanned point
cloud. A system of lightweight 1m
rods provide a fixed azimuth and
enables easy deployment down
hole, up hole or horizontally.
In the process of developing a
new generation of cavity scanning
system, MDL has been working
closely with R. A. Rodriguez on
the selection and supply of a
number of components for a much
improved vertical drive system.
Modified KHK spiral bevel gears
were an important element in
the design, products for which R.
A. Rodriguez is KHK’s European
master distributor.
These high precision, strong gears
have high load ratings and run
at speed with minimal noise and
vibration, important performance
factors for MDL. Options include
fully hardened keyways and
pilot bores that allow additional
customer modification. MDL took
advantage of this facility without
incurring any compromise on lead
time.
Steven Ball Snr, MDL’s Chairman
concludes: “The new, drive system
allows the probe to scan four times
faster than the previous unit. Its
capability and service life is also
increased many times over. The
combination of a more robust drive
system with C-ALS® improved
ingress protection opens up the
product’s use in a number of new
markets.”

Delta Tau Geo Brick LV family
Variohm EuroSensor
signs distribution deal available from Heason Technology
Variohm EuroSensor, the electronic
component distributor and
manufacturer for specialist sensors,
has added a new range of magnetic
technology rotary encoders to its
comprehensive position sensor
range following a new UK and
Ireland distribution agreement with
the USA based technology leader,
Avtron Industrial Automation Inc.
The agreement brings Avtron’s
Wide-Gap™ magnetic sensing
technology to Variohm providing
extremely durable, highly safe and
exceptionally reliable solutions for
rotary position sensing in oil and
gas, wind turbines, cranes, mining
and many other ‘heavy’ engineering
applications.
As an alternative to optical encoders
which can be fragile and damaged
by contamination, the wide-gap
magnetic technology used in Avtron
encoders can ‘see through’ dust,
dirt water, oil and grease. The
non-contacting technology uses a
rotor system with radial north and
south pole inserts and a stationary,
magnetoresisitive sensor. Version
are available as separate rotor/
stator units without bearings or as
fully housed and sealed assemblies
for severe duty use complete with
support bearings. Diagnostics can
be built into the assembly allowing
users to remotely identify problems
before costly shutdown is required.
Avtron’s latest hollow-shaft magnetic
encoder, the XT45, is aimed at
offshore oil-rig position sensing
applications. It has a 5000 ppr
resolution with full quadrature A,B
Avtron XT45 hollow shaft magnetic
encoder
and Z channel output - and boasts
a severe duty specification that
includes a shock rating to 300 g,
vibration to 20 g in any direction with
an operational temperature range
from -40º C to +100º C. The labyrinth
sealed encoder is rated to IP67 and
a polyurethane enamel paint finish
shrugs off dirt, oil, mild acid and salt
water contamination. It has universal
5...24 V operation, a self diagnostic
alarm output and is fully protected
from wiring problems and surges.

When Small is beautiful
There are plenty of instances when
smaller, independent suppliers
of automation equipment can
offer better service, provide more
cost-effective solutions, cut costs,
and even supply components
that are better suited to a
customer’s application than larger
manufacturers. So says Andrew
Fallows, managing director of Motor
Technology, a specialist supplier of
servo and automation equipment
and systems.
”Independents, like Motor
Technology, are not tied to any
one manufacturer,” says Fallows,
“and so if we’re designing a drive
or automation system we can
source components from different
suppliers, if doing so enables us
to specify a more effective solution
or reduce costs. We can design
systems based on our knowledge
of a wide range of products and
technologies, and can provide
solutions that not all manufacturers
will have available.”
Take motors as an example. Large
manufacturers will often attempt
to lock out motors from other
suppliers forcing customers on
to their preferred product line.
This is unsatisfactory when some
applications might benefit from a
motor with higher inertia, a simpler
feedback device or a different
winding, than what is being offered.
Motor Technology sources product
from a number of suppliers and can
provide the customer with the motor
most beneficial to the application.
Another example is direct drives.
Direct drives are suitable for
applications requiring a high degree
of accuracy, smooth running,
backlash-free operation and high
acceleration. Best of all, direct
drives allow the system designer
to dispense with many power
transmission components such as
gearboxes, couplings, toothed belts,
sprockets and chains. This can
reduce the cost of ownership of the
system, increase efficiency and cut
energy consumption.
Not all companies manufacture direct
drives and so it’s likely that less
suitable solutions might be offered so
that the manufacturer can supply its
own technology. This might not only
be less efficient than a direct drive
solution but also more expensive.
The drive electronics also play
a big part in providing the right
solution. High dynamic applications
might require the ultimate in drive
performance or it may be that
engineers are less interested in high
performance and want to cut costs by
integrating the PLC or motion control
within the drive.
Some customers might be servo
novices, getting to grips with the
technology, and looking for a drive
that is simply ‘plug and play,’ whereas
others might want to delve into the
control loops and change parameters
‘on the fly’. Being independent
Motor Technology can benefit all
these customers, regardless of their
requirements, by offering the full
range of products and solutions.
A further benefit of independent
suppliers comes when old servo drive
technology needs to be replaced. A
manufacturer would want to replace
old components with their modern
equivalent, which will involve the
additional cost of new cabling and
engineering so that the new part
will fit the old assembly. A better
solution for the customer might be to
replace the old unit with a compatible
product, manufactured under license,
as this would be easier and quicker
to install and less costly.
”There are plenty of reasons
for championing the smaller
independent,” Fallows explains, ”At
Motor Technology, for instance, we’ve
got over 25 years of experience in
servo and automation technology
with a wide range of suppliers of
components and equipment. We
can mix and match products from
different suppliers to make sure
customers get the very best solution
in terms of cost, reliability, ease-ofuse and efficiency.”

The world’s first laser
triangulation sensor to
use blue laser technology
Micro-Epsilon has launched a world
first in laser triangulation sensor
technology with its innovative Blue
Laser Sensor. The new sensor
offers significant benefits for users
who need to measure the position
or displacement of red-hot glowing
metals and also translucent targets.
Micro-Epsilon’s optoNCDT 1700BL
series of Blue Laser Sensors
operate on the laser triangulation
measuring principle and use blue
(violet) laser technology. The
sensors are ideal for measurements
on hot, glowing metals, particularly
in hot steel processing applications,
as well as for measuring organic
materials such as skin, foodstuffs,
plastics, veneers and wood.
The wavelength of the blue
laser offers significant technical
advantages.
With red, glowing objects, a
conventional red laser has a high
signal interference from the object
surface, because it emits the
same or very near wavelengths of
light as the red laser. However, the
blue laser works at a wavelength
of 405nm, which is far from the
red part of the visible spectrum.
This means it is easier to filter
this type of emitted light from the
object, which ensures very stable
signals. The blue laser therefore
measures extremely well on both
glowing metals and ceramics. This
is a unique advantage, for example,
when it comes to measuring the
wear or deformation of automotive
brake discs under load.
In addition, there are significant
benefits to be seen when measuring
against translucent objects such
as organic materials, paper,
some plastics and wood veneers.
Unlike a red laser, the blue laser
light does not penetrate into the
measuring object because it has
a lower intensity laser spot and
therefore offers more stable, precise
measurements on targets that
conventional red laser sensors have
difficulty measuring.
Micro-Epsilon’s Blue Laser Sensors
are equipped with new high-end
optical lenses, a new intelligent
laser control and evaluation
algorithms. The sensors are suitable
for red glowing metals up to 1,600
deg C, and for silicon up to 1,150
deg C.
The optoNCDT 1700BL operates
using the laser triangulation
principle. A laser diode projects
a visible point of light onto the
surface of the target object. The
light reflected from this point is then
projected onto a CCD array. If the
target changes position with respect
to the sensor, the movement of the
reflected light is projected on the
CCD array and analysed to output
the exact position of the target.
The measurements are processed
digitally in the integral controller. The
Baldor Motion’s e100
Ethernet enhancements
benefit Heason Technology
As a preferred systems integrator for
Baldor Motion, Heason Technology’s
in-house design and assembly
capability benefits from the global
motion control leader’s versatile
e100 intelligent servomotor
drive and controller range which
continues to expand with additional
communication and application
development features.
The e100 family includes the
MicroFlex e100 and MotiFlex
intelligent single-axis drives as well
as the NextMove e100 multi-axis
motion and machine controller. At
the heart of these motion products
the real time Ethernet Powerlink
standard combines with TCP/IP
and Baldor’s Mint system building
environment to provide a universal
drive platform that can suit a wealth
of applications from standalone
motion control to PLC hosted
networked systems.
Baldor recently announcement that
it has added even greater flexibility
by re-engineering the e100 range
with full compatibility with another
two Ethernet standards, namely
EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. These
design improvements do not require
additional cost or plug-in cards and
significantly widen the potential
data is output via analogue (I/U) and
digital interface RS422 or USB.
Chris Jones, Managing Director at
Micro-Epsilon UK Ltd comments:
“As well as being the world’s first
laser triangulation sensor to use
blue laser technology, the optoNCDT
1700BL also has an integral
controller, which automatically
compensates in real time for
difficult-to-measure surfaces. The
sensor’s unique real-time surface
compensation [RTSC] feature and
patented high-speed evaluation
algorithms dramatically reduce
signal noise. When customers need
to measure against hot glowing
metals, they can adjust the laser
on time of the sensor to give them
the optimum exposure time on the
CCD for that particular surface. This,
in turn, provides a higher accuracy
measurement due to lower noise
level on the output signal.”
Most suppliers can only offer
sensors with a fixed measurement
rate, which is selected by the
manufacturer as a ‘best case fits
all’. This means that for most
surfaces, the user then has to
rely on averaging the output data
to reduce the noise level or error
on the output, which gives lower
accuracy. However, using MicroEpsilon’s software algorithms,
for integration of Baldor’s motion
products into large scale PLCcontrolled networked systems.
Baldor have also added a new
single axis version of Mint software
to its e100 intelligent drive range.
Called Mini Lite, it offers all of the
multitasking language power of Mint
for complete control of the drive,
on-board I/O, communications
and Ethernet networking features.
MiniLite is a free of cost
enhancement and will make system
commissioning even simpler for
multiple serial drives where a single
point of access via Ethernet is
required.

the measurement rate on the
sensor can be slowed down for
difficult surfaces. This means it
can compensate in real time, and
the exposure time of the laser
light on the CCD can be optimised
for the surface of the object to

accuracy measurements.

Special labelling machine
for multiple box sizes
York-based, Sessions Label Solutions
likes a challenge. It is a company that
takes on labelling projects that most
of its competitors reject. However,
thanks to its considerable design and
applications know-how Sessions is
immensely successful at what it does.
For this reason the company was the
obvious choice for a special purpose
labelling machine for a confectionary
company of international renown.
A single machine was required
to apply security labels to all four
sides of a box of sweets and also to
accommodate a range of pack sizes.
And that meant designing a system
whose labelling heads and parallel
conveyors could be moved in unison
to pre-determined positions to accord
with box dimensions. Having used
HepcoMotion® linear motion products
for many years, Sessions once again
put its trust in this brand for this
application too.
The basis of the resulting system
is two pairs of parallel conveyors
mounted on linear slides that are
coupled together to form an ‘L’
shape. These parallel conveyors
on each leg of the handling system
provide the means to adjust the width
to suit the different box sizes. For the
maximum box width of 400mm the
conveyors are at their widest apart
and for the smallest, 100mm, they are
brought together and almost touching.
This has to be precisely accomplished
as the customer requires L-clip labels
to be applied. To achieve this, the
box has to overhang the 30mm wide
conveyors on two opposing sides, so
that label can be affixed to the side
and bottom faces of the box. The
linear speed of the conveyors is 30m/
per minute with a maximum product
throughput of 60 boxes per minute.
Indeed one of the most popular
features of this product is its stainless
steel cover that effectively seals the
unit from debris. It is therefore a
natural choice for many food handling
applications that require a spacesaving and hygienic drive.
To move the conveyors in and out,
Sessions chose the HepcoMotion®
double-acting PSD80. This linear
actuator is perfectly suited for this
duty, with drive from a stainless
steel lead-screw operating with a
bearing polymer nut. It employs
HepcoMotion®’s Herculane ultra-high
performance wheels mounted in an
adjustable carriage body for zero
play linear motion. The double-acting
version of this unit proved ideal for
Sessions as it allows the adjustment
of both conveyors from the operator
side.
The labelling heads of this special
purpose machine are fixed to the
carriage plates of HepcoMotion®’s
flagship GV3 linear motion system
that easily provides the required
positioning accuracy of ± 1mm.
The entire machine is mounted on
the HepcoMotion® MCS aluminium
machine construction system. “We
like this product because it looks
smart, it’s easy to build and versatile
to accommodate changes,” Gary Hall
adds. “Quick delivery and good price
are important factors too.”
“The ability of the PSD80 to run
dry was an important factor in our
choice,” explained Sessions Sales
Director, Gary Hall. “So too was its
neat design, especially the enclosed
screw on the linear adjustment.”
In operation, the conveyors and
label heads on both sections of
the machine are manually adjusted
to suit the dimensions of the next
batch. On leaving the packaging line,
the boxes then travel down the first
pair of conveyors to the label heads
where the L-clip labels are applied
to the first two opposing sides of the
box and secured underneath. They
are then turned through 90° by the
cross over unit and steered along
the second pair of conveyors for
the application of L-clip to the two
remaining faces.
Gary Hall concludes, “The system
and the HepcoMotion® products
are working very well. We have
successfully fitted HepcoMotion® to
many of our systems over the years
and have always found them to be
good value and good quality products.
Both are very important factors in an
industry where costs- and production
efficiency are vital ingredients”.

Continued growth since ‘Flying Start
Business Award’ in 1991!
This month, marks 30 years of
business for Arrow Engineering,
Salford. In 1991, Russ Arrowsmith,
of Arrow Engineering, entered, a
then, Granada Television’s business
enterprise challenge; ‘Flying Start’,
a competition for local Business’s,
to expand and develop their
business profile. Russ entered ‘that’
competition, by setting up his own
machine shop.
‘Flying Start’ was a televised
business competition of the 1980’s
/ early 1990’s very similar to
Dragons Den today, where companies
that entered were scrutinised and
questioned regarding their business
plan and their potential growth
capabilities. At that time ‘Flying
Start’ had the highest cash prize of
any televised competition, with a top
cash prize of £40K. Companies from
the Granada TV area would compete
in separate heats, which would lead
to a Grand final.
