These seminars bring well respected, industry specialists into the classroom with the attendee students. Content focuses on batteries, technical aspects of the DC system, and manufacturing, maintenance, and testing issues. Enjoy learning and networking while earning 0.4 CEU’s. All seminars are on Monday from 1:30PM to 5:30PM. Each $99 seminar helps you better understand batteries and material presented at the conference. There is no prerequisite for any seminar. Stationary Battery Basics Seminar Instructors: Garth Corey, Rick Tressler Do I use the same charge voltage for all my different batteries? What is the impact of using the wrong charge voltage? When is a battery operating in a cycling environment? A standby/float environment? What are the management differences? What are some of the more predominant battery failure mechanisms? What can be done to avoid and control them? How can I get the most life out of my batteries? This session can help. Our two instructors spend the afternoon discussing fundamentals of the lead-acid battery. Beyond the Fundamentals Seminar: Advanced Topics in Lead-Acid Batteries Instructors: Curtis Ashton, Steve Clark This seminar provides additional, in-depth information for attendees who need a more intense understanding of their battery systems. Beyond the Fundamentals explores five key topic areas that will assist in understanding more about what goes on inside as well as outside a battery. These topics include discussions on the following: • Advanced lead acid fundamentals. • Application, selection, and considerations for both conventional flooded and VRLA types. • Data collection, record keeping, IEEE recommendations, warranty, and trending health. • Failure modes, the aging process, warranty issues, and end of life determination. • Periodic visual inspection criteria, where problems arise, and causes of troubles throughout the service life of a battery. Focus On Seminar: Load Testing Instructors: Bill Cantor, Ed Rafter, Lesley Varga When should I load test my battery? What equipment is required? How much current should be used? What parameters need to be monitored? When is a low voltage cell a problem? When do I bypass a cell during a test? If you have stationary batteries, you should be testing them periodically and in accordance with industry recommended practices. Attend this seminar to learn the answers to these questions and more. Instructors will use their knowledge and experience along with the framework of IEEE standards as the road map to an excellent learning experience on this frequently misunderstood topic. 4 THE BATTCON TECHNICAL COMMITTEE Each year, members of the Battcon Technical Committee volunteer their time to review and select the papers submitted for presentation at Battcon. How the Current Draft Standard of NERC PRC-005-2 Maintenance Requirements will Reduce Battery System Reliability Peter J. DeMar, Founder, Battery Research and Testing, Inc. The existing proposed NERC PRC-005-2 maintenance requirements standard allows for the substitution of internal ohmic measurements in place of load testing. This is a step backward in assuring operability of the station battery. This paper will show that there has been substantial proof that internal ohmic measurements cannot be used for proving capacity or capability and recommends that this substitution not be allowed. Initial Test Results on Proposed 80% Service Test, One Test Covers Duty Cycle and Trends Capacity Kyle Floyd, Consultant, EXCEL Services Corporation A new type of battery discharge test named the 80% Service Test was proposed at Battcon 2010. Initial conceptual testing results look promising with more testing underway.
