In the world of nuts and bolts and other mechanical fasteners, things are
usually lat, parallel, perpendicular, and rigid, just the way engineers like it. But a
professoratCaliforniaPolytechnicStateUniversity,SanLuisObispohasdisruptedthat
notion. Saeed Niku, a professorof mechanical engineering at Cal Poly working with
studentsinoneofhisclasses,hasdevelopedthe“FlexibleFastener,”aboltdesignedto
bend.Attheheartofthefastenerisashankmadeofastrong,yet lexiblematerialsuchas
Kevlar,nylon,steelcable,orwirerope.Threadsmadeofsteelcoiledlikeaspringwrap
aroundthecoreandarebondedtoitalongthelengthandateachend,alongwithahead
atoneend.
Thefasteneris“axiallyrigidbutlaterallycompliant,Nikusaid.“Youcantighten
thescrewlikeanyscrew,butitcanalsomovesideways.”Itcancarryaxialloadsyetis
lexibleenoughtoconnectnon-parallelsurfaces,gothroughmismatchedormisaligned
holes,orhandlemachineapplicationswheresmalllateralmovementsarerequired.A
patentdrawingofthefastener.TheideafortheFlexibleFastenercamefromaprojectin
Niku’sPhilosophyofDesignclassin2000.Threestudentswereworkingonaproject
wheretherewasaquestionaboutputtingscrewsintothewoodenframeofCalifornia
housesforearthquakeprotection.Theywantedtoboltthehousestothefoundation.
Nikucameupwiththeideafora lexiblebolt,andthestudentstookitandmadesamples.
Aftertheclassended,Nikutookovertheprojectandre inedthedesign.TheNational
Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Alliance and the Lemelson Foundation initially
fundedtheeffort.
TheFlexibleFastenercanbemadeinmanydifferentsizes,fromassmallas
3/16 inch in diameter to as large as desired. According to Jim Dunning, program
managerinCalPoly’sOf iceofResearchandEconomicDevelopment,whichengages
industrythroughtheCaliforniaCentralCoastResearchPartnership,thefastenercanbe
manufacturedtovariousdegreesofrigidity.Nikusaidthefastenercanbeusedwith
“anything basically that is not parallel or aligned or needs to move sideways.” In
construction, it can attach parts with non-parallel surfaces without a need for
countersinks,asinatruss.Itcanbeusedinrepairingandrefurbishingproductsand
structureswhereholesdonotlineuporaremisplaced.Youcanactuallyjustbenda
screwintothenon-parallelsurfacesandattachthem.Itcanalsobeusedinrobotics
applicationswheresimultaneouslateralcomplianceandaxialstiffnessisdesired,asin
attachinga ixturetotherobotthatcanmovesidewaysforassembly.

Arti icial leaf technology is sprouting new growth. For decades, engineers and scientists have been pursuing a
practicaltechnologytocopynature’strickofconvertingsunlightandwaterintopurehydrogen.Theefforthasbeenslow,but
newnanomaterials,chemicalprocesses,andpublic-privateinvestmentsarestrengtheningthearti icialleaf’spositionasa
promisingbranchofthesustainableenergyindustry.Arti icialleavesandotherspeciesoffaux-photosynthesis,ifscaledup,
could signi icantly reduce greenhouse emissions, curb fossil fuel demand, and bring low-cost power to resource-starved
regionsinthedevelopingworld.IntheU.S.,wherecarsandtrucksproducea ifthofthenation’sheat-trappingemissions,
electriccarsaresteadilygaininggroundandaninfrastructuretokeepthemjuicedupisdeveloping.Althoughelectricvehicles
arefreeoftailpipeemissions,theirgreenadvantageisdiminishedatthechargingstation,wheretheytapintoconventionally
producedpower.
Newhydrogen-poweredcarslikethe2016ToyotaMirai–selectedbytheUnionofConcernedScientistsasoneofthe
ivecleanestnewcarsonthemarket–usesahydrogen-poweredfuelcellinsteadofabattery.Hydrogenisacleanef icientfuel
thatgivestheMiraianditsilkarangeofdistancebetween ill-upsonpartwithagasoline-poweredcar.However,because
hydrogendoesn’toccurnaturallyonEarth,itmustbemanufactured,andthepreferredrawmaterialformosthydrogenmade
today is natural gas or through electrolysis, which converts high-purity water into hydrogen using large quantities of
electricity. The arti icial leaf would eliminate the carbon footprint altogether by using only sunlight to achieve the same
chemicalreaction. Thearti icialleaf’spotentialstemsfromaprocesscalledwatersplitting.Itinvolvesplacingspeciallycoatedphotoabsorbingelectrodesintowater,wheretheycatalyzeaphotoelectrochemicalprocessthatbreaksthemolecular
bondbetweenthewater’shydrogenandoxygen.Dependingontheneed,thehydrogencanbeusedimmediatelyorstoredand
furtherprocessed.Theengineeringchallengehasbeento indtherightbalanceoflowcost,highef iciency,androbustness.
Materials that work well as photocathodes for hydrogen extraction work best in an acidic water; oxygen-extracting
photoanodes,however,requireabasicenvironment.Manyofthebestcatalyticcoatingshavebeencostlyandscarcematerials
thatareeconomicallyoff-limitstocommercialexploitation.
Early arti icial leaves proved the concept on a small scale but were too
expensiveandunstabletobescaledup.In2011,however,MassachusettsInstituteof
TechnologychemistDanielNocera(nowatHarvard)revealedadevicehailedasthe
mostpracticalapproachyet.Histeamdevelopedcobaltandnickelcatalystswiththe
abilitytosplitwaterfromanysourceusinglightatambienttemperatureandpressure.
Reporting10timesmoreef icientenergyconversionthannaturalphotosynthesisover
at least 45 hours of continuous operation, the technology fueled the launch of
SunCatalytix. The company shifted emphasis to a closer-to-market low-battery
product before its acquisition by Lockheed Martin last year. Although it’s not yet
certainifthisparticulartechnologywillseethelightofday,there’splentyoflifeleftin
thearti icialleafsweepstakes.
TaketheJointCenterforArti icialPhotosynthesis,forexample.JCAPwaslaunchedin2010withtheambitiousgoalof
