MIG Welding
A continuous wire feeding welding process utilising 0.9mm solid
wire and 1.2mm fluxed-cored wire. Students will learn to weld
a range of metal thicknesses ranging from 2.0mm – 12.0 mm.
Certificate in Advanced Welding students also undertake a range
of positional welding techniques.
PRACTICAL
TIG Welding
A non-consumable electrode process utilising filler rods to form
the weld. Students will have the opportunity to weld carbon
steel, stainless steel and aluminum materials ranging from 1.6mm
– 6.0mm in thickness. Techniques learned on the Welding and
Fabrication Skills programme are further refined for Certificate in
Advanced Welding students.
MMA Welding
A consumable stick electrode process utilising 2.5mm, 3.2mm and
4.0mm diameter rods. Students will learn to weld a range of carbon
steel thicknesses ranging from 5.0mm – 12.0mm, using both rutile
and low hydrogen compositions. Certificate in Advanced Welding
students also undertake a range of positional welding techniques.
Thermal Cutting
Students will routinely use oxy-fuel cutters in the preparation of
exercise plates as well as doing plasma, air arc and oxy-fuel
gouging. Training is also given in the use of the uni-directional
creeper cutter.

Further education
National Certificate in Engineering Fabrication (welding strand)
National Certificate in Motor Industry (automotive heavy engineering)
Sonny-Lee Marks, NZ Welding School graduate,
now Chassis Fabricator at Kraft Engineering.
“I’d been working in forestry for four years and wasn’t
going anywhere. Welding was an interesting option for
me. I’d never touched a welder before starting on course
and now I’m building trailers for logging trucks…I work at
Kraft Engineering where I use the skills I learnt at the NZ
Welding School; specifically being able to read plans,
dimensions, and measurements. I would advise others
to give welding a go as many options arise in welding,
i.e. apprenticeships, trade certs, welding tickets… I love
welding the big stuff and being able to see the finished
product.”

TESTIMONIALS
Daman Huata, NZ Welding School graduate, now
welder/fabricator at Electrical Machinery Supplies
(EMS)
“I was looking for a new career path so I looked into the
New Zealand Welding School and chose to become a
certified welder. I enjoyed the time I was there, especially
the friendship of the tutors and the amount I learnt in
such a short time. At EMS I work in heavy fabrication;
making track frames, guards, gussets and belly pans.
The NZ Welding School really helped me understand
drawings. The best thing about what I do is being in the
workshop, learning new skills daily and having a good
income at the start of my career. My advice to anyone is
if you think you want to do it [welding], do it and love it.”
Arthur McLellan, NZ Welding School graduate, now Engineer at Top Gear
Welding and Fabrication.
“I am now employed as an engineer at Top Gear Welding & Fabrication in Rotorua
where I weld and fabricate to customer’s specifications; steel scrap bins, stock
car chassis etc. They won’t give you a welder on the first day. You start with
grinding, sweeping the floor and doing smoko but hang in there, if you stick with
it you will get to weld… Now I have an income, and a great job and career. I see
welding as a necessity. We will always need to weld so the opportunities are
boundless.”
