NZQF NQ Ref 0096 Version 5 Page 1 of 11 National Certificate in Motor Industry (Brake Service Engineering) Level 3 Credits 101 This qualification has been reviewed. The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December 2016. Purpose This certificate is designed as the national qualification for people working in the Brake Service Engineering branch of the Motor Industry. This qualification is a means of recognising knowledge and skills required to carry out all tasks required in brake service engineering, from advising customers on brake and clutch problems, maintaining stock control, costing jobs, machining discs and drums, overhauling brake components, rectifying clutch faults, to diagnosing and rectifying braking faults on vehicles. The certificate is designed for people wishing to work in a safe and professional manner; to maintain standards for the brake engineering industry; and to provide a means of recognising prior learning for those already working in the industry. Details regarding industry recognition and registration can be obtained from the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation in the first instance. Unit standards in this qualification have relevance to other automotive engineering qualifications, and those people who wish to consider additional unit standards or qualifications should contact the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation for advice. Replacement Information This qualification, the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Servicing) [Ref: 0138], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Radiator Repair) [Ref: 0188], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Steering, Suspension, and Alignment) with an optional strand in Heavy Commercial Vehicles [Ref: 0246], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Exhaust Servicing) [Ref: 0372], and the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Tyre Servicing) with optional strands in Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Tyres, Agricultural Equipment Tyres, Off-The-Road Equipment Tyres, Industrial Tyres, and Steering and Suspension [Ref: 0373] have been replaced by the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Vehicle Servicing) with strands in Brake and Clutch, Exhaust Systems, Radiator Repair, Steering and Suspension, Tyres, Underbody and General Service, and Vehicle Security, and with an optional strand in Heavy Vehicle Steering and Suspension [Ref: 1420]. Special Notes It is expected that most people will undertake training towards this qualification in the form of apprenticeship with the use of record of achievement books and training manuals. It is recommended that in the first instance, a “training plan” be developed with the assistance of a NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation representative.
