By the time the dirt had settled, Bison Stadium had been transformed into a first-class athletic facility. The facility changes included placing a new artificial turf on the playing field, a surface called FieldTurf. This will allow Bethany to practice and play at Bison Stadium throughout the season, regardless of weather conditions. In addition, lights were installed, which will enable the Bison to conduct full practices outside late in the season when daylight begins to dwindle and allow Bethany to possibly host home night games in the future. Football isn’t the only program which will benefit from the facility upgrade. With the new surface and lights, the men’s and women’s soccer teams will be able to play at Bison Stadium as well. They will play the first home night games at Bethany at this year’s Homecoming when they host Geneva in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. (women’s) and 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3. Bethany’s track and field programs also received a boost, as the football field is surrounded by a new rubberized track surface. Other improvements included a steeplechase pit and jump, and areas for pole vault, high jump, long/triple jump and throwing events. The renovations stretched over to the softball diamond too. Top soil removed from the Bison Stadium playing field was spread on a recently regraded field, which will include a new backstop and fencing. The decision to renovate the athletic facilities was not just done with varsity athletics in mind, according to Bethany President Dr. Scott D. Miller. “The entire campus and community will benefit from these improvements,” Dr. Miller noted. “Not only will our intercollegiate program benefit, but the improved track will benefit the community walkers and all facilities will benefit our recreation/intramural programs as well.” 3 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany, Chatham, Geneva, Grove City, Saint Vincent, Thiel, Thomas More, Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg and Westminster - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2007-08, the conference had 35 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 19 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, AllPAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Westminster women captured the 2007-08 trophies. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic AllAmericans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named a record 660 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. Washington & Jefferson Men, Westminster Women Capture 2007-08 PAC All-Sports Trophies The Washington & Jefferson College men and Westminster College women captured the 2007-08 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) All-Sports Trophies. The all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition. First-place finishes are worth eight points (seven for men), second place is worth seven points (six for men) ... eighth place is worth one point. Miller, 48, became the 19th president of Bethany College on January 1, 2008. Well known nationally for his contributions to higher education, he was one of 17 presidents nationwide featured in a Kauffman Foundation-funded book entitled The Entrepreneurial College President (American Council on Education/Praeger Series on Higher Education, 2004, pages 132-133). Five years ago, he was featured in the book The Small College Guide to Financial Health (National Association of College & University Business Officers, 2002, pages 126, 192-194). Prior to coming to Bethany Dr. Miller served as the 15th President of Wesley College (1997-2007) in Dover, Delaware. Dr. Miller’s tenure as Wesley president was remarkably successful. He built on the institution’s rich heritage as Delaware’s oldest private college, inspiring record applications, a climbing enrollment, increased Dr. Scott D. Miller alumni participation and giving, a greater minority presence, and ultimately, national President recognition for the institution. He led the college community in the creation of From Here to 2010: A Plan for Wesley College, a widely endorsed $84 million blueprint which charts the institutional course for the foreseeable future. Dr. Miller was the 16th president of Lincoln Memorial University (1991-97) in Harrogate, Tennessee. He served as Executive Vice President (1988-91) and Vice President for Development (1984-88) before being named president. He was also an interim public information officer at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Director of University Relations and Alumni Affairs at the University of Rio Grande (OH). He is also a former newspaper journalist for The Edinboro (PA) Independent, The Buckhannon (WV) Record and The Weston (WV) Independent. Dr. Miller earned his B.A. from West Virginia Wesleyan College, M. A. from the University of Dayton, Ed.S. from Vanderbilt University, and Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from The Union Institute & University. He has also completed post-graduate studies at Ohio University and Harvard University. He is married to the former Annie Cook (a registered nurse), and they have two daughters, Katie, 23, and Ashlee, 20. President’s Cabinet Dr. Michael Mihalyo Provost & Dean of Faculty 5 William Keifer Executive V.P. & General Counsel Sven de Jong V.P. for Institutional Advancement Stephanie Kappel Executive Assistant to the President Head Coach Tim Weaver Tim Weaver is entering his third season as Bethany’s head football coach and in June, 2008, took on the additional responsibility as the school’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. In his first season on the Bison sideline in 2006, Weaver guided the team to a 4-6 overall record, the most wins since going 6-3 in 2001, and a 2-4 record in the PAC, the first conference victories by the Bison since 2002. Overall, seven school records were broken, including four by wide receiver T.J. Parker, and eight players earned All-PAC accolades. Bethany continued to make strides in 2007, as they Tim Weaver went 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the PAC again. BC Head Coach started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2001 Davidson/1990 and posted victories over Westminster and Thomas More later in the year. The record book continued to take hits, as 13 marks were either broken or tied, and 10 players, the most in four years, received All-PAC laurels following the campaign. Weaver arrived at Bethany following a three-year stint at Columbia. His best season came in 2004, when the Lions improved from 117th the previous year to 59th in I-AA in yards allowed per game. In the last two seasons at the helm of the Columbia defense, seven players on that side of the ball earned All-Ivy League recognition. Prior to serving as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the Lions, he was at Harvard for four seasons. Prior to his step up to the Ivy League, Weaver was the defensive coordinator at West Virginia Wesleyan from 1996-99. Weaver was a four-year starter at defensive end/linebacker for Davidson College in North Carolina, where he graduated in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology. He began his coaching career at Western Connecticut State in the fall of ’90, where he was the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator for two years. He then went to Hofstra University, serving as the defensive line coach for four seasons before taking the job at West Virginia Wesleyan. When looking at his goals for the program, Weaver will always have short-term milestones he wants to achieve, but he will never lose site of the one long-term goal he brings to the Bethany campus. “I only have one long-term goal,” said Weaver. “It’s that every student-athlete who plays for Bethany will graduate and win at least one conference championship in their time here. That’s my idea of a competitive program. Get everyone a degree and a ring. We said that to every recruit we talked to at Harvard and that’s the same approach I want to have at Bethany.” Weaver and his wife, Kelly, reside in Bethany with their two daughters Delaney (6) and Casey (2). He also oversees the quarterbacks. Bethany’s offense continued to operate at a record-setting pace in 2007 under Garvey’s watch. Nine new offensive marks were established, including Single-Season Total Offense (4,105), Single-Game Total Offense (739 vs. Saint Vincent) and SingleGame Rushing Offense (482 vs. Saint Vincent). In his first season under center, QB Milton Joyner set a new BC record with 21 touchdowns passes as he earned Second Team AllPAC, one of six offensive players to garner all-league honors. In Garvey’s first year calling the plays in ’06, Bethany finished second in the PAC in passing offense (198.9) behind QB Brent Owens, who broke the school’s single-season completion percentage record (62.0). Bill Garvey Garvey came to Bethany after spending two seasons at Off. Coordinator/QBs Stonehill (Mass.) College, a Division II program that plays in the Iona/1997 Northeast-10 conference. In 2005, the Skyhawks posted a 4-6 record for their most wins since the 2001 season. Prior to his time at Stonehill, Garvey was at Harvard University from 2000-2004 and worked with Weaver for three seasons. Weaver and Garvey also share another connection on their resumes, as they both worked at Hofstra University at separate times. Weaver was the defensive line coach from 1992-96, while Garvey started his coaching career with the Pride as a graduate assistant from 1997-99. Garvey attended Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he was a three-year member of the football team and was on the 1993 squad that captured the MAAC championship. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems. Garvey and his wife, Gina, reside in Bethany with their two children Emma (4) and Will (3). Long-time West Liberty State College assistant Keith Phillips is in his second year as the Bethany defensive coordinator. In his first season heading up the defense, Phillips’ defense allowed nearly five points per game less than the previous season and four of the Bison’s All-PAC selections came from the defense. Phillips’ experience includes 14 years as the defensive coordinator at West Liberty State, including the 2000 season in which the Hilltoppers won the WVIAC championship. That year saw West Liberty rank first in the WVIAC in total team and rushing defense, as well as takeaways (35) and quarterback sacks (37.5). The vaunted Hilltopper defense also ranked 10th in the nation in rushing yards allowed. Keith Phillips During his tenure, West Liberty was ranked first in the conference in total defense three times and ranked in the top Def. Coordinator West Liberty State/1989 two in scoring defense on four separate occasions. Under his tutelage, Hilltopper players earned First or Second Team allconference accolades 59 times, including three WVIAC Defensive Players of the Year, and nine of those players would earn All-American honors. Pior to coming to Bethany, Phillips served as the defensive coordinator at Wheeling Park High School under head coach Mark Nardone. The Patriots went 12-8 during Phillips’ time, including a 7-3 mark in 2006. The Park defense recorded three shutouts and held seven teams to 10 or fewer points over those two seasons. Phillips, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from West Liberty State in 1989, resides in Wheeling with his wife, Terry, and three sons: Zachary, Nathan and Brett. 7 Assistant Coaches Andy Upton is in his fifth year with the Bethany program. The assistant head coach is in his third year guiding the wide receivers. In 2006, his first season coaching the receivers after two years of heading up the offensive line, Upton helped T.J. Parker finish his career as the most prolific wide receiver in BC history after he broke four school records. Last year, both BC wideouts earned all-conference recognition, as Matt Cruse (52 rec., 763 yds., 9 TDs) was named Second Team and Taylor McNeil (52, rec., 711 yds., 5 TDs) received Honorable Mention distinction. Upton came to Bethany after spending five years as an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va., where he worked with the wide Andy Upton Asst. Head Coach/WR receivers, tight ends and special teams. He helped lead the Bobcats to the 2002 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Championship. W. Va. Tech/1996 In addition to his football responsibilities, Upton handled the coordination of advertising and fund-raising programs for the Bobcats and worked with the sprinters as an assistant track and field coach for one season. Prior to his time at West Virginia Wesleyan, Upton worked for a season at his alma mater, West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he coached the wide receivers. Upton graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, with an emphasis on Marketing. He received his Master of Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan in 2001. Upton, who is also the head men’s and women’s track and field head coach at Bethany, and his wife, Rebecca, the head women’s basketball coach at Bethany, reside in Wellsburg. Andrew Rossi Offensive Line Bethany/2004 The 2008 season will be Andrew Rossi’s fifth as an assistant coach with the Bethany football team. After coaching the defensive line his first two seasons, he is in his third year leading the offensive line. Under Rossi’s guidance, the Bison line gave up just 15 sacks in 2007, the fewest in the PAC, and helped BC move up from seventh in the league in rushing in 2006 to third last season (185.7). Rossi was a three-year starter on the offensive line for the Bison, starting every game in 2003 as a senior. As a sophomore, he started for a line that set the Bethany record for fewest sacks allowed in a season. He moved to center as a junior as Bethany broke 14 offensive records during the season. Rossi was also an outstanding student, earning a spot on the PAC Academic Honor Roll four times. Rossi graduated from Bethany in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in communication. He is pursuing a master’s degree in counseling from West Virginia University. 8 Assistant Coaches Stephen Potter Defensive Line West Virginia St./2007 Tom Murphy Running Backs Baldwin-Wallace/2007 Marcus Wilder Defensive Backs Miami (Fla.)/2002 9 The 2008 season will be Stephen Potter’s second on the staff and first as the defensive line coach for the Bison. Potter worked with the running backs a year ago and was a big reason Bethany jumped from seventh in the league in rushing in 2006 to third last year. Marcus Santini completed his first year with 473 yards on 78 carries for a 6.1 average, tied for third-best in BC single-season history. Potter came to Bethany after a one-year stint as the varsity offensive and defensive line coach at George Washington High School in Charleston, W.Va. In addition, he was the defensive coordinator and co-special teams coordinator for George Washington’s freshman team. Prior to his time at GW, he played four years and was a three-year letterman along the offensive and defensive lines at Division II institutions West Virginia Tech and West Virginia State. Potter earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from West Virginia State in May of 2007. Tom Murphy is entering his first season as the Bethany running backs coach. Murphy joins the Bison from Baldwin-Wallace, where he served as a student-assistant coach in 2007. He was the assistant wide receivers coach and junior varsity program’s offensive coordinator. Murphy’s gridiron career at B-W saw him earn four letters and start three years at wide receiver. Voted the team’s Most Outstanding Receiver in 2005 and 2006, he caught 59 career passes for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns. His most productive season came as a senior in ‘06 when he grabbed 26 receptions for 496 yards and two scores, as he became just the 20th receiver in Yellow Jacket history to go over 1,000 career receiving yards. During his freshman season, Murphy helped B-W finish 10-1 and reach the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Murphy graduated from Baldwin-Wallace in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in health promotion and education and is pursuing a master’s degree in educational leadership at West Virginia. Marcus Wilder is entering his first year coaching the defensive backs with the Bison football program. This will be Wilder’s seventh season as a coach. Most recently, he served as the DB coach at Louisburg Junior College in North Carolina. Wilder also spent two years as a graduate assistant coach working with the defensive backs at Florida International. In ‘06, the Panthers ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense and 28th in total defense. In his second season at FIU, Wilder coached CB Lionell Singleton, who earned 2nd Team All-Sun Belt. Other stops in Wilder’s coaching career included one year at Hampden-Sydney College and two years at Monacan High School in Virginia. Wilder’s playing career included three seasons as a walk-on defensive back at Miami (Fla.). He was a member of the 1998 Hurricane squad which went 9-3 and scored a 4623 victory over North Carolina State in the Micron PC Bowl. Wilder graduated from Miami in 2002 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and earned a master’s degree in sports management from Florida International in 2007. Support Staff/Cheerleaders Michael Hughes is in his sixth year as head athletic trainer at Bethany College. A native of Michigan, Hughes has an athletic training background in many areas, including high school, hospital, clinical, industrial and NCAA Division II and Division III college levels. Hughes received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Athletic Training/Health and Wellness from Olivet (Mich.) College in 1997 and earned his Master of Science degree in Athletic Training from California (Pa.) University in 2002, graduating magna cum laude. Prior to arriving at Bethany, Hughes worked as an athletic trainer at Olivet and California, as well as Quincy High School in Michigan. In addition to being an athletic trainer, Hughes is a CPR/AED/First Aid instructor and emergency medical technician and holds certifications in the following areas: athletic training, Michael Hughes strength and conditioning, personal training, health and fitness, disaster managament and basic Head Athletic Trainer life support instructor. He is also an assistant professor in Bethany’s physical education/sports studies program. In the community, Mike is a member of the Training Center Faculty at Wheeling Hospital and is an Athletic Training Approved Clinical Instructor at Wheeling Jesuit. One of the changes affects Weaver, who led Bethany to their second consecutive 4-6 season (2-4 in the PAC) last year. In addition to being the head football coach, he is now the director of athletics and recreation and one of his main duties has been to oversee the revitalization of Bison Stadium. Bethany’s home field underwent extensive work over the summer, which included the installation of a new FieldTurf playing surface and lights. The first game at the Bison’s refurbished home is Sept. 13 against Kentucky Christian University, a first-year NAIA program, and the updated facility brings quite a few perks to the entire program. “Any kind of progress is exciting and a project like this is the best kind,” said Weaver, whose teams have broken or tied 20 school records in his tenure. “Our day-to-day operations will be helped tremendously. We won’t have to worry about the condition of the practice field, we can stay out under the lights for practice late in the season when daylight ends quicker and we can practice on the same surface we’ll play most of our games on as well. “And obviously it’s going to help in recruiting,” said Weaver. “It’s a better looking facility, but it also shows institutional commitment to the program .” When Weaver took the reins to the program in December of 2006, he had a clear vision of where he wanted to take the program and how long it would take to get there. Coming into year three, Weaver says everything is going to plan to this point. “We are right on schedule as to where we wanted to be and have hit all our progress landmarks,” said Weaver. “We’ve grown from about 80 players in the program to nearly 110 this fall, saw a significant increase in wins the first year, then saw major statistical improvements during the second year. The gap between us and the top teams in the league was so considerable when we arrived, we couldn’t be too discouraged when we lost. Now we feel we’ve closed that gap and the next step is to beat those teams.” 11 The one major change for the Bison offense will come at quarterback. Milton Joyner paced the BC offense to a school-record 4,105 total yards last year, as he threw for more than 2,000 yards and 21 TDs, while rushing for five more scores. The lone returner at the position is sophomore Dan Pegg, who completed 5-of-6 aerials for 47 yards in the ’07 season finale. While the Bison coaches like Pegg, he will have to fend off some skilled freshmen for the starting job. The new quarterback will hope to see the running game show continued improvement. After gaining just 71 yards per game on the ground in Weaver’s first season, BC’s ground production jumped to better than 185 yards a game last year. Sophomore Marcus Santini (above) was a big reason for the improvement, as he churned out 473 yards on just 78 carries (6.1 average) and scored five touchdowns despite missing three games because of injuries. The questions to be settled in camp include who will be the primary back-up behind Santini at tailback and who will rise up to grab the fullback position. In addition to a solid ground game, the Bison offense also features a talented receiving corps, possibly the deepest in the PAC. Junior Matt Cruse (below) returns after catching 52 passes for 763 yards and a schoolrecord tying nine TDs last year, which earned him Second Team All-PAC. Senior Taylor McNeil matched Cruse in receptions for 711 yards and five scores, while also amassing more than 1,450 all-purpose yards. Add in junior Matt Dahle, who had 11 catches for 153 yards, sophomore Randy Rankin, who pulled in 15 passes for 147 yards, sophomore Clint Wilson, as well as junior TE Jorge Laboy, and there will be no shortage of targets for whoever gets the call under center for Bethany. 2008 Season Preview Another key to the offense’s production last year was the play up front. The Bison return four out of five starters on the offensive line, including First Team AllPAC guard Brian Liptock (right) and Honorable Mention tackle Chad Sedlacek. Junior Chris Bailey, a two-year starter at center, and sophomore tackle Bob Rovnanik, who started six contests, are also back. What solidifies this position for BC is the depth they have acquired following two strong recruiting years. The defensive side of the ball is where Bethany must see improvement. Although the Green and White held three teams to 14 or fewer points last year, the most since 2002, they still ranked eighth in the league in scoring (31.4) and total defense (390.6). The key to bettering those numbers starts up front, where Weaver is looking to senior Chris Boland (left), who had a team-high three sacks, and sophomore Brad Ragghianti, who made 31 stops as a freshman, to pace the way. The big area of change on the defense is at linebacker, where Bethany graduated all three starters from a year ago. While there may be a shortage of experience, there won’t be a shortage of competition to fill those spots. The competition is so open, Weaver didn’t single out a favorite for any of the positions. The defensive backfield will be the strong point of the unit, with three starters back and a fourth who saw considerable time last year. Sophomore FS Nelson Mitzen (right), the team’s leading returning tackler (65), was Second Team All-PAC after also leading Bethany with two interceptions. On the corners, senior Brandon Zeman was Honorable Mention All-PAC with 35 tackles despite missing the final four games because of an injury, while junior Michael Salters is back for his third year as a starter. Bethany’s special teams will have plenty of returners who can break a big play at any time, including McNeil, who set a school record for kick returns (34) and yards (643) last year. Sophomore transfer Jermaine Washington will also get a chance to bring back kicks, while the punt returning duties will be handled by Dahle, who took a punt back for a score last year, and Cruse, with Washington also possibly pitching in there. The Bison punter will definitely be a freshman, as Mike Elias graduated. The kicker could be sophomore Nick Comer (below right), who hit a pair of extra points last year, but he’ll be pushed by three freshmen in camp. In order for the Bison to continue to hit the progress landmarks that Weaver has set, their main objective is to get better defensively, while giving their quarterback a chance to be successful on offense and making plays on special teams. “If we want to continue to make strides as a program, we have to improve defensively,” said Weaver. “This is the year for us to make significant improvements, especially against the run. Offensively, whoever the quarterback is, we have to get him ready to play and put him in situations where he can succeed. And we have to look to make plays on special teams, whether it is returns or fakes to get any advantage we can.” 12 2008 Roster # 14 94 66 61 78 50 35 55 27 57 71 29 69 57 17 26 76 1 4 6 51 70 41 89 54 86 53 39 22 45 81 64 83 21 52 46 40 62 91 9 62 71 79 15 92 25 90 88 61 85 89 63 19 28 13 Name David Abel Zach Adams Terry Akers Mickey Alkire Deaven Allen Chris Bailey John Becher Chris Boland Alex Bota Ryan Busch Ray Bussard Logan Buzzard Derek Cannon Kevin Collins Nick Comer Jay Copper Eric Corrigan Matt Cruse Matt Dahle Brad Davis Dennis Davis Terry Davis Joe Douglas Zac Duffy Dontavis Edwards Casey Elson Ron Ermlick Gordon Everett John Falconi Nick Fields Brandon Foster Brandyn Frey John George Randy Gibson Dan Gigler David Grillo John Gyure John Haag Brad Hartley Jake Hartley Ty Holland Greg Iverson Joe Jones Jeff Joyce Thomas Kisner Jeff Krek R.J. Joyner opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown strike to WR Brad Zink on the initial drive of the year. A 24yard field goal by Matt Blumer made it 10-0 at halftime. The Bison put the game away with a pair of scores in the final period, one coming on a 59-yard scoring toss from Joyner to WR Matt Cruse and the other coming on a oneyard sneak by Joyner with seven minutes to play to cap the scoring. Bethany’s balanced offensive attack rolled up 447 yards, including 225 through the air and 222 on the ground. RB Nick Neratka rushed for a career-high 137 yards, while Cruse led all receivers with six catches for a career-high 122 yards. The Bison defense turned in a strong effort as well, holding the Terriers to 258 total yards and getting three sacks. LB Bill Wineberg led the defensive effort with 12 stops, including a sack, and earned PAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. BETHANY, W.Va. - Behind school-record totals in total offense (739) and rushing yards (482), the Bison improved to 2-0 with a resounding 66-7 victory over Saint Vincent in BC’s home opener. The scoring bonanza started with an 83-yard scoring pass from Joyner to Cruse four minutes into the game and Bethany would build a 49-0 halftime lead. Geneva scored first for a 7-0 lead, but the Bison moved within a point on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Joyner to WR Taylor McNeil, although the extra point was blocked. The Golden Tornadoes answered back with two TDs before halftime to take a 21-6 advantage into intermission. Midway through the third, BC reached the end zone when an 11-play, 90-yard drive culminated in an eight-yard scoring connection from Joyner to Cruse to make it 21-13. Bethany had two possessions with a chance to tie, but a Geneva interception set up the clinching touchdown with less then two minutes to play. Joyner totaled 217 yards through the air, his third straight game with 200+ passing yards. Cruse was the top target with six catches for 88 yards and the score. Zeman was the top tackler on defense with 12 stops in the loss, while DB Dante Fuscardo amassed nine hits, including a sack. GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel compiled 425 rushing yards and scored 17 points off Bethany turnovers to score a 3713 victory over the Bison in Greenville. The Tomcats grabbed the lead by scoring late in the first quarter, but BC answered on their next drive when FB John Rhodes bolted 15 yards for a touchdown to make it a 7-6 Thiel lead. The hosts came right back with a long scoring run and a field goal just before the halftime gun to take a 17-6 halftime lead. Thiel’s lead expanded to 24-6 early in the third quarter, but the Bison defense set up their next score. DB R.J. Faldowski returned a fumble 26 yards and the next play saw McNeil take an end-around 49 yards for a touchdown to bring the Green and White back within 11 at 24-13. That was as close as Bethany would get, a the Tomcats put the game away with 13 late points, including a touchdown on a fumble return. The Bison ground game accounted for 192 of the team’s 218 total yards, including 78 from Santini. LB Chance Kildow was the defensive leader with 12 tackles and a break-up. GCC pulled out to a 12-0 lead, but a three-yard scoring run by Santini late in the second quarter made it a 12-7 Wolverine lead at halftime. A Grove City field goal made it 15-7 early in the third, but the Bison tied the game when Joyner fired a 49-yard scoring pass to Cruse and Santini ran in for the two-point conversion. The rest of the game belonged to the hosts, as they answered right back with a touchdown to move in front 21-15. Then an interception and muffed punt led to the final two GCC scores and the 36-15 final. Bethany finished the game with more first downs (2420) and total yards (445-396), but scored just once in six red zone opportunities. Santini was the main Bison highlight, carrying 21 times for 151 yards and a TD. Joyner threw for 193 yards, with Cruse bringing down five passes for 95 yards. On the defensive front, DB Nelson Mitzen totaled 12 tackles for the Green and White. BETHANY, W.Va.. - Bethany’s Homecoming festivities were overshadowed by a Waynesburg defense which allowed just 113 total yards in a 45-7 Yellow Jacket victory. Waynesburg RB Robert Heller paced the visitors to a 210 halftime lead by rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the first 30 minutes. The Yellow Jackets tacked on the first 17 points of the second half before the Bison notched their only points when Joyner lofted a 31-yard scoring aerial to Cruse late in the third quarter. Bethany’s offense was limited to only 24 yards on the ground and 89 through the air. McNeil led all receivers with six receptions in the contest. Posting a team-high in tackles was Mitzen, who made 10 stops and forced a fumble. Waynesburg vs Bethany (Oct 13, 2007 at Bethany, WV) Bethany vs Grove City (Oct 06, 2007 at Grove City, Pa.) The Bethany defense set up the clinching scores, as a fumble recovery was followed on the next play by a 53yard scoring jaunt by Santini. The freshman back also followed an interception by breaking off a 30-yard run to paydirt to cap the Bison’s win. Joyner went on to earn PAC Offensive Player of the Week after completing 26 passes for 321 yards and two scores, while adding in two rushing TDs. Nov. 10, 2007 Game 9 Carnegie Mellon at Bethany Nov. 3, 2007 BETHANY, W.Va. - Bethany’s two-game winning streak was stopped, as the Bison fell behind 28-6 and could not climb out of the hole in losing 42-19 to Carnegie Mellon. After the Tartans opened the scoring, BC rallied to make it 7-6 on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Joyner to Zink. Carnegie Mellon answered with three straight TDs, including an interception return. Bethany scored just before the half when Joyner tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Cruse for a 28-13 score at the break. Carnegie Mellon secured the win with scores on their first two drives of the second half. The Bison closed the scoring on a one-yard TD reception by Cruse, which was his ninth of the year to tie the single-season record set just one year earlier by T.J. Parker. Cruse was the top receiver for the game, grabbing 10 of Joyner’s 19 completions for 81 yards and the two scores. Joyner finished the day with 206 yards through the air and three scores, while RB Nick Czapor led the ground game with 73 rushing yards. Kildow led all defensive players in the contest with 12 hits, while Mitzen and LB Michael Wells had eight each. WASHINGTON, Pa. - Bethany went toe-to-toe with undefeated W&J for nearly three quarters, but the Presidents scored 42 of the game’s final 49 points to record a wild 77-39 victory over the Bison. A total of seven BC records were either broken or matched during the game, with Joyner and McNeil having a hand in all of them. Joyner threw five touchdown passes in the game to five different receivers, including Zink (2 yds.), TE Mike Elias (11), WR Eric Terrell (29), Neratka (16) and McNeil (52). That tied the Bethany single-game record and gave Joyner 21 touchdown tosses on the year for a new single-season standard. The Bison QB also accounted for 453 total yards to establish a new singlegame mark. McNeil was the top target, pulling in 13 passes to tie the single-game record for 221 yards, second-most in a game by a Bison receiver. He also set records for most kickoff returns (34) and kick return yards (643) in a year. The game also saw a new Bethany record for most combined points in a game by two teams (116).
