Therese Chambers Arth Gino Bompiede Marlene Herman Mary McGraw Erin McIntyre Joe Outlaw Jessica Shuleva A s we finally break free from a particularly harsh winter, I am buoyed by a number of local roadway projects that will eventually make moving around the neighborhood easier. Those projects include the spot reconstruction of Rocky River Drive, now nearly complete. Larger projects encompass the resurfacing of Warren Road between Munn Road and Lorain Avenue, and Triskett Road in the future from Lorain Avenue to West 117th Street. Puritas Avenue is also being resurfaced from Rocky River Drive all the way to West 130th Street. And finally, an important safety upgrade to the crosswalk on Lorain adjacent to Kamms Plaza may be complete by the time you read this. Please be careful in these construction zones, and be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicycles. Our neighborhood is continuing to thrive thanks to our many independent business owners and the support of our residents. New businesses include Red Lantern Kitchen & Bar and West Park Music, both at Kamms Plaza, Gyro World and the Somalian Food Market on Lorain, and the new Car Parts Warehouse that will completely renovate and occupy the former Kelly Hardware Store. Many other projects are “in the works” and will be revealed in the coming months. If you know of a new business looking for a new location, or an entrepreneur planning to start a business, please send them our way. We’ll help them navigate the process and find them a good home! This winter truly tested everyone’s mettle. From experiencing record snowfall to freezing temperatures, we really had a doozy. Happy to say we made it out relatively unscathed. Our infrastructure certainly took its lumps, but it’s great to see the lawn mowers and rakes getting revved up for a good spring cleaning. With my youngest child’s First Communion right around the corner, I need to get busy around my own house, too! Speaking of infrastructure, Rocky River Drive remains under construction south of Lorain. This digging out and re-pouring of concrete will continue for a while. We have recently applied for some additional funds from the Ohio Department of Transportation as well as from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency to close a few gaps. The condition of that roadway has been a challenge for years, and the resources required to re-construct it are huge. All parties realize the desperate state of the roadway and the dire need for attention along its entire stretch from the airport to Hogsback Lane. The 5th Annual Hooley on Kamm’s Corner™ jumps off on May 10. I really can’t believe it’s been five years since we took a simple ribbon cutting and created a wonderful neighborhood event for young and old. We have a dynamic lineup of entertainment on two stages continuously from noon until 8 p.m. along Lorain Avenue. Please plan to bring the family up to the corner and invite your friends and co-workers who may never have had the pleasure. Wonderful food, kid’s activities, and great entertainment for all! Let’s make the 5th Hooley™ the very best. The locker room improvements at Gunning Recreation Center are still in the design phase. A full analysis of the Center reveals that there are significant improvements needed in every corner. Yet, my focus has always been the locker rooms, because if there isn’t a place to sit and change, then no one will. And that’s not good. We have a very nice facility that needs constant attention, and my feeling is that we need to start in the locker rooms. If guests don’t have a good experience at the beginning or end of their visit, then they are 5 not likely to return. And, when they don’t return and demand better, we will continue to slide in terms of upkeep and maintenance. Last week, I was briefed on the final design engineering concepts for Impett Park. The focus was on the playground equipment as well as park layout. Great concepts, but we still need to take a look at a restroom/ concession option. That was made even more clear this week as we had St. Joseph Academy softball on two fields, two other baseball teams practicing, high school rugby in the outfield, men’s rugby on the pitch, four youth rugby teams sharing the football field, soccer on the tennis court, and, of course, a full house on the playground. I’m not complaining. It’s a great problem to have when a neighborhood park is in such demand. My hope is that a design for a restroom/concession concept will be completed in May with a public meeting to follow shortly thereafter to determine the best use of these funds. Orange barrels have already popped up throughout the neighborhood. Warren Road from Lorain to Munn is under construction as is Puritas Avenue. Meanwhile, I am waiting for the specifics on Munn Road in cooperation with the Office of Capital Projects and Cuyahoga County. Thankfully, we passed an ordinance recently to accept proceeds from the County’s share of the State gas tax to resurface Munn Road. I am well aware that this is just a drop in the bucket. Our streets are in desperate need of repair. The local funding mechanisms simply don’t go as far as they did in the past, which is why we are seeking help from any and all partners. As you leave the house now that the weather has broken, please shop locally. Introduce yourself to the new and improved Red Lantern in Kamms Plaza. Get your haircut at the corner and stop for a soup or a sandwich at one of the many great options we have within a block or two. Whether along Lorain Avenue, Warren Road, or Rocky River Drive, you will always find great people running wonderful small businesses who would love to tell you about it. See you at the Hooley™! Golf Outing To Raise Funds for YMCA The West Park Family YMCA hosts its Annual Golf Outing on Friday, July 27, at the Hickory Nut Golf Course in Columbia Station. This traditional event brings together community leaders, neighbors, and YMCA advocates to raise funds for the Y’s Annual Support Campaign. Since it was built in 1957, the branch has continued to serve the West Park community. Generations of families have learned important lifelong skills there, such as water safety, physical education, and character development. The Y continues to serve the community with over 2,700 members. Through fund raising events such as the Annual Golf Outing, the Y is accessible to all. The Y is able to make its programs and facilities open to everyone because of the scholarship program and the power of volunteerism. The Y does not turn anyone away due to inability to pay. Last year’s Golf Outing contributed over $10,000 to the Annual Support Campaign. As a result the Y was able to: • Provide safe, enriching, and fun Day Camp activities. • Provide swimming lessons to area youth. • Give away school supplies and backpacks to youth in order to begin a successful school year. The Y is committed to strengthening the foundation of the community through programs that promote youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living, all of which would not be possible without the support of its community partners. Help strengthen the health and wellness of our neighborhood children, families, and individuals. If you are interested in sponsoring or participating in the event, please contact Branch Director Brandon Bussey at 216-9415410 or bbussey@clevelandymca.org. Meet Our New Staff Members Ben Campbell Director of Commercial & Industrial Development When ward boundaries changed in January, KCDC’s service area gained additional industrial property reaching to and including Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. And, last year’s strategic planning process determined a greater focus was needed on commercial, retail, and industrial companies. The result? Meet Ben Campbell, Director of Commercial and Industrial Development! In this newly created position, Ben is helping KCDC to foster an environment that attracts and retains businesses here. A graduate of Cleveland State University’s (CSU) College of Urban Affairs, Ben has spent over two decades working to improve Cleveland neighborhoods with a focus on economic development. How did Ben develop an interest in helping Cleveland neighborhoods improve? During a nine-month internship with Cleveland City Hall while in college, Ben worked in many different Cleveland neighborhoods. “That put the hook in me,” he explained. After graduating from CSU, his first job was with Cudell Improvement. Next he joined Slavic Village Development (SVD) in 1995, and during his 19 years there, he gained valuable experience with commercial and industrial development, transportation improvement projects, real estate development, and Julie Dahlhausen Housing Assistant Julie Dahlhausen recently joined the KCDC staff part-time to help track housing issues. A native of Aurora, Julie is thrilled at the opportunity to contribute to Kamm’s Corners. “Having interned with KCDC, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the people and businesses of Kamm’s Corners. I’m excited to join the KCDC family and help maintain the neighborhood’s exceptional environment.” Housing Assistant Julie Dahlhausen. But, when this new position opened up here in West Park, he jumped on it. “What could be better than having the opportunity to work where I live and have raised my family?” Originally from San Francisco, Ben grew up in Bay Village. He bought a house in Kamm’s Corners 13 years ago and lives here with his wife, Claire, and two daughters. “We love West Park and don’t have any plans to go anywhere else,” he said. Outside of work, Ben’s interests include gardening, reading, and camping. Ben Campbell, Director of Commercial & Industrial Development 7 Julie is a recent graduate of BaldwinWallace University, graduating with a focus on community revitalization and grassroots activism. Outside of working with nonprofits, Julie works at Savor the Moment Coffee Shop, which allows her the opportunity to develop friendships with many Kamm’s residents. She is an avid hockey fan and enjoys collecting records. Pinewood Derby events have been a Cub Scout tradition since 1953. Cub Scouts taking part in the event build their own cars with adult supervision. Each participant receives a car building kit that contains a block of pine, four plastic wheels, four axles, and decals. The boys either trace a provided car pattern or one of their own design onto a block of wood. Adults cut out the blocks utilizing a band saw. The scouts then sand, paint, and decorate their cars with an assigned racing number. It is truly impressive to see the great variety in the appearance of the racers. Creativity and imagination abound! First Place - Jasian Gibson. Second Place - Marcus Whitmore. Third Place - Jeremy Murray. The final operation is to attach the wheels to the cars and add weights to bring the total car weight up to 5 ounces. This is skilled operation important to a car’s performance on the track. The cars are powered by gravity. A standardized sloping track is provided that has three lanes. The finished cars are placed upon the track three at a time and simultaneously released for an exciting downhill run that can approach speeds of 20 miles per hour! There is plenty of excitement and cheering from the side lines at each run. The gym was packed with race fans viewing the gravity fueled action! The Pinewood Derby benefits both Cub Scouts and adult leaders who through the derby process itself experience strengthening bonds, sharing responsibility, developing teamwork, learning new skills, exercising creativity, building sportsmanship, and making new friends. Our local event was administrated by Scout Leaders Lou Toth, Unit Commissioner, Edwin Hubbard, District Director, and Doug DeWerth who volunteered from Troop 293. A helping hand was also provided by West Park Kiwanis members Herb Hampson, Cliff LaRocque, Bruce Hansen, and Gabe Dery. Over the years, Cub Scouts have built close to 100 million Pinewood Derby racers. Laid end to end, the cars would reach from Cleveland to New Dehli, India! That’s a lot of cars and even more fun! Congratulations to everyone who took part in this great race! $5 Off any FULL GROOMING of $40 or more! Its purpose is to invite people to connect through gardening. West Park is not yet on the tour, but gardens here will be sought for inclusion in 2015. Please read the KCDC e-newsletter this fall for details. Meanwhile, plan to enjoy the Fourth Annual GardenWalk Cleveland, taking place the weekend of July 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. No tickets are necessary for the tour. Each neighborhood will have a designated headquarters where visitors will find garden maps, restrooms, and water. This year, master gardeners will be available at neighborhood headquarters to help with the tour, answer questions, and give gardening advice. Beginning July 1, maps of all the gardens will be available at Petitti’s Garden Centers, Dave’s Markets, and at gardenwalkcleveland.org. Last year, GardenWalk Cleveland counted over 1,000 visitors during the two-day event. This year’s neighborhoods include Detroit Shoreway, Larchmere, Tremont, and Slavic Village, with more to come. GardenWalk Cleveland is made possible through the generous sponsorship of organizations and individuals committed to connecting people with each other, with nature, and with the beautification of Cleveland. Visitors can tour at their own pace and will get a unique opportunity to meet people and enjoy a huge variety of gardens and farms in our city’s neighborhoods. “I was so impressed with the gardens I saw and the friendliness of the people,” said a guest last year. “There were plants that I had never seen before, creative ways to garden in small spaces, and one of the gardeners even gave me a cutting of one of her plants. I can’t wait for next year.” GardenWalk Cleveland was started in 2011 by Jan Kious with Bobbi Reichtell. Each year since then, they’ve worked along with a group of volunteers to plan a weekend showcasing the beauty of Cleveland’s gardens, including private home flower gardens, community gardens, urban farms, vineyards, and orchards. GardenWalk Cleveland strives to be an enjoyable and welcoming garden experience. GardenWalk Cleveland is a free, self-guided tour of gardens. Many gardeners who participate in the event enjoy discussing their gardens with the walkers. New Classes Begin for Master Gardener Volunteers Ohio State University Extension and Master Gardeners of Cuyahoga County, Inc. announced registration for the 2014 Master Gardener Basic Training Class. “We are excited about the opportunity to offer our program in an evening format,” says OSU Extension Educator Jacqueline Kowalski. “With the course normally offered during the daytime, so many interested individuals could not be accommodated. This new format allows us to reach a broader audience.” The OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program is open to any interested individual. Classes begin August 25, and they continue through October 29, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Two full-day field trips are also planned as part of the course curriculum. Classroom training, lectures, and hands-on learning activities are presented by Ohio State University Extension faculty and staff. Topics covered in training include: soils and fertilizers, entomology, integrated pest management, plant pathology, plant propagation, invasive species, houseplants, lawns, herbaceous and woody ornamentals, vegetables, herbs and fruit. The focus is on providing non-biased research based education and training in order for persons to become confident volunteers. Volunteer opportunities vary and are presented through the training program. Interested individuals can attend one of three informational sessions scheduled Tuesday, May 13 at the Fairview Park Library, 21250 Lorain Avenue, Fairview Park; Wednesday, May 14 at the OSU Extension Office, 5320 Stanard Ave., Cleveland; and Thursday, May 15 at the Shaker Heights Main Public Library, 16500 Van Aken Blvd, Shaker Heights. All sessions begin at 7 p.m. At these sessions there will be the opportunity to meet with Ohio State University Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers for an in-depth look at the Master Gardener program. The answers to any questions you might have regarding training, volunteer opportunities, and special events will be handled. The Master Gardener volunteer description provides some of these details. Attending an information session is recommended, but not mandatory in order to submit an application. In addition to the informational sessions, information on the course can be found on the Cuyahoga County Master Gardener website at cuyahogamg.org under How To Become A Master Gardener. As help from the community poured in, the goal was raised to $25,000. Then 50 heads to shave became 102 shaved for the cause resulting in final donations totaling $42,022! Right from the start, St. Mark Pastor Father Miceli got into the “Shave Your Mane” spirit. He told the students that if they raised $10,000, he’d shave his head. When they reached that goal, he countered with $20,000 to also shave his beard! Well, his head ended up hairless by the time it was all over! Ten students from Our Lady of Angels joined the event and were the top team in donations! It was an entire community effort. Many establishments in Kamm’s Corners, Lakewood, Rocky River, and Fairview donated gift cards and made in-kind donations to the “shavees” and the event itself. In addition to volunteers, 14 local barbers donated their time and talent. Dr. Robin Norris, a pediatric oncologist and a St. Baldrick’s grant recipient at University Hospitals, spoke to the crowd of over 500. Georgianne Orbany and her son Michael from St. Bernadette School spoke. Michael is a warrior fighting cancer for the second time. Amy Haddad and her son Shane from St. Christopher also spoke. Shane, too, is fighting cancer. Julie Haylor and her daughter Alexis also from St. Christopher spoke as well. Alexis in third grade, and she is currently in remission. Amanda Cole, mother of Gavin Cole, a 16-month-old boy who passed from a rare form of brain cancer in January 2013, was also honored. It was an emotional, educational, and energy filled afternoon. The next “Shave Your Mane” is scheduled for March 2015. ? Questions ...we have the answers. Not wanting to poke at Mother Nature, we can only hope that the winter cold and snow is gone for this year. Daffodils and crocuses have come up, trees are turning green, backyard grills are again sizzling, and we are more than ready for that delicious taste of freshly grown vegetables and fruits you can get from Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market or from your own back yard. Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market always offers a great shopping experience and a neighborhood destination. We feature farm fresh produce and products and much more, every Sunday from June 8 through October 12. We have new operating hours this season: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Going into its eighth season with over 30 vendors, the market boasts a breadth of offerings. We have vegetables and fruits of course, but also meats, cheeses, eggs, pasta, bread and pastry, scented soaps, olive oil, and everything in-between. Some of the participants offer organic produce, and others offer hormone-free, naturally raised meats. Farmers, artisans, and professionals participating at our market come from as close as a mile away to dozens of miles away, but virtually all of the offerings are from Northern Ohio and are grown or made by the vendors themselves. Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market boasts weekly live musical entertainment from locally famous and sometimes internationally famous artists. Dozens of very talented people grace our stage – too numerous to mention. But suffice it to say our market attendees are always entertained. We also have a weekly chef demonstration that features local chefs showcasing their talent. Many utilize produce from the market vendors, demonstrating what can be done with the great fresh produce available at our market. To help kick-off opening day on June 8, Yesteryear Horse & Carriage, sponsored by the West Park Kiwanis Club, will offer horse-drawn wagon rides for only $1 per person. Our featured chef demo will be from the celebrated “farm to table” restaurant, AMP 150, located inside the Marriott Hotel on West 150th Street. Music will be provided by local favorite Jeff Sherman. As always, our farmers market will host a free Perennial Exchange the second market (June 15) and the second last market (October 5). Just dig and bring some perennial plants or flowers to share or trade. No selling. This is all free! Credit, debit, and EBT cards are accepted. Select vendors accept WIC and SFMNP coupons. The report emphasizes the many contributions that help to make the Foundation so successful – from its donors, investments, grants, awardwinning programs, and leadership. Community West Foundation is a well-known organization that touches lives and profoundly impacts our community. This past year, the Foundation shared over $5 million in grant funding to help many worthy causes. The Foundation has seen a great increase in philanthropy and raised over $4.2 million in gifts and contributions from a donor base of nearly 2,000 supporters. Donor Advised Funds are growing at a fast pace at the Foundation, and fund holders gave nearly $1 million in support of 111 charities, extending the reach of the Foundation even further. But do you know the story of the West Park Club? Here’s a brief history. Kiwanis International The Kiwanis is an international organization of clubs that was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915. Originally focusing on business networking, by 1919, the Kiwanis became dedicated to community service. In 1924, the Kiwanis International adopted six permanent “Objects” as guiding principles that define them. • To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards. • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship. • To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities. • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill. Over the years the Kiwanis became more focused on children’s causes. In 2005, they adopted “Serving the children of the world” as their official motto. The 2013 West Park Independence Day Parade Kiwanians at the Heroes Run with St. Joseph Academy Key Club volunteers. Joe “Flipping Fool” Outlaw keeps them fed at a Kiwanis pancake breakfast. The West Park Kiwanis Club The West Park Kiwanis, organized in 1927, was the third Cleveland club to be chartered. Now in their 87th year of service to the community, their laudable history of service projects is far too long to completely enumerate here, but their achievements include: • Construction of the New York Central underpass at West 143rd Street and Lorain Avenue, thereby eliminating a dangerous railroad crossing. • Instrumental in having the Cleveland Board of Education approve and build John Marshall High School where the first Key Club in the U.S. chartered. President Marilyn Valentino (left) helps induct President-elect Lloyd Gross into the Ohio Kiwanis Legion of Honor Society. 25 • Instrumental in working with the Cleveland School Board and Traffic Department in the installation of the flashing traffic lights in front of all schools. • Originally sponsored, and was instrumental in obtaining the construction of the West Park YMCA building. • Sponsor of the Key Club at St. Joseph Academy. • Sponsor of Builders Clubs at Puritas and Riverside middle schools. • Sponsor of K-Kids Clubs at Puritas, Riverside, and Douglas MacArthur elementary schools. • Financial support to Bell Greve Center for Behavioral Health and special education classes at Newton D. Baker School of Arts and Our Lady of Angels School. • Sponsorship of the Kamm’s Corners Independence Day parade for 25 years! • Support of Meals on Wheels. • Support of the Bread Basket food programs. • Support of the Heroes Run. • Support of the West Park YMCA. • Support of KCDC. • Support of Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market. • Donated hundreds of books to the pediatric ward and a monitoring tread mill to the cardiac rehab program at Fairview Hospital. • Support of the West Park Historical Society. Whether it’s hosting a table at a KCDC Asphalt Cinema or serving hot chocolate at the Kamms Plaza Christmas Under the Clock gathering, Kiwanis members are always ready to lend a hand. To raise funds in support of all the above activities, numerous family friendly fun events are hosted throughout the year. It’s hard to find someone who has not been to a Kiwanis spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast. Under the leadership of immediate past president Marilyn Valentino, the club branched out and innovated new fund raisers including the West Park Dine & Dance, several Zumba-Thons, Dine & Donates at area restaurants, and even a “Dunk the Outlaw” dunk tank. The Kiwanis Club of West Park needs you! They meet at the Cretan Center located on West 168th Street, just south of Lorain Avenue on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Many West Park baby boomers don’t realize In this aerial shot taken in about 1933, Sweeney’s Pasture is the open grassy area at top of photo, west of newly they grew up in Sweeney’s Pasture. constructed John Marshall Football Field. 27 Triskett & Warren Roads Repaving Underway The much needed repaving of Triskett Road and Warren Road is underway. Triskett Road is being repaved along its entire length, while Warren Road is being repaved between Lorain Avenue and Munn Road. The new design entails squaring off of the intersection of Triskett Road and Lorain Avenue. The re-configuration will allow for improved signalization, easier access to the YMCA, and a much shorter crossing distance for pedestrians crossing Triskett Road. The overall safety of the intersection will be greatly increased. Other changes include lane configuration, new parking restrictions, and bicycle accommodations. West Park Tidbit The name West Park comes not from the direction “west,” but from early settler John M. West, who bought a 600-acre farm here, reserving 25 acres as his front yard. He added an artificial lake complete with rowboats, forming a park-like wooded preserve. He invited his neighbors to freely use it. That park was called “West’s Park,” which became shortened to “West Park.” It was near what is now Lorain Avenue and West 138th Street. IT’S SPRING! Let us help you get ready ! Saint Joseph Academy Digital Initiative Use of Chromebooks Garner National Media Attention St. Joseph Academy’s digital initiative, in which each of the nearly 700 students received their own Chromebook laptop at the beginning of the school year, has been receiving a lot of local and national attention. Information Technology Director Kyle Laauser had the opportunity to share the details of the initiative, SJA+, with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal this past January. The initiative was also mentioned in Crain’s Cleveland Business, the Universe Bulletin in February, and the March edition of Cleveland Magazine featured SJA in a comprehensive story about the use of technology and social media in education. The second annual “Earn Your Spots” Jaguar 5K/1 Mile Walk benefitting the St. Joseph Academy scholarship fund is being held on Memorial Day, May 26, starting at 9 a.m. at the school. Irish Rockers Aim To Get Hooley Crowd Jumping TM The Boys from County Hell pack venues around Cleveland primarily around St. Patrick’s Day. As closers on The Hooley™ stage this year, their high energy performance will surely have the crowd jumping! The band takes its name from a hit song by Irish rockers, The Pogues, a Celtic rock band that reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. Traditional Irish instruments such as the tin whistle, mandolin, and accordion gave TM The Pogues a unique rock sound. As a tribute band, The Boys from County Hell play traditional Irish instruments, too. This eight-member band gets together only a few times each year. The rest of the time they are in other bands. “We formed 15 years ago on a whim,” said Chris Allen vocalist and guitarist for the Boys. Two of the musicians were in a takeout line at a Taco Bell late one November when a Pogues song came on the radio. They decided to pull together a tribute band just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. They played at the Euclid Tavern and the place was packed. Since then, the band has performed throughout the Midwest and had gigs in Las Vegas and Bangkok. “It’s always a fun party on stage,” said Chris. “We’re looking forward to bringing quite a lot of energy to The Hooley™!” They go on stage at 6 p.m. Boys From the County Hell are Chris Yohn (fiddle), Aaron Pacitti (banjo), Ryan Foltz (whistle, trumpet), Chris Allen (guitar, mandolin), Tom Prebish (bass), Nick Stipanovich (accordion), Doug McKean (vocals, guitar) and Dave McKean (drums). 30 International Tattoo Throughout European military history, musicians marched out from barracks at the end of the day to play signals and alert troops to return home before the castle gates were locked for the night. In the 17th Century, when these musicians called the soldiers to retire, the Dutch phrase “doe den tap toe” or “shut off the taps” could often be heard in the village pubs of Holland and Flanders. As these nightly occurrences became popular sources of entertainment to the villagers, they also became evermore elaborate. This popular tradition of public musical and drill displays evolved into the modernday tattoo, condensed from “tap toe,” much like the solemn tune Taps. The Greater Cleveland Peace Officer’s Memorial Society invites all to enjoy the displays of marching, music, dance, and song by the finest men and women from across North America, and join the international community in remembering the fallen heroes who have returned home for the final call. Annually, the entire community joins together in remembrance, fellowship, and celebration to salute our safety forces, our military, and our country. The Tattoo on Saturday, May 17 is open to everyone. Tickets start as low as $20 and discounts are available for “liking” them on Facebook at “Cleveland International Tattoo (CIT).” In the time-honored tradition of the military tattoo, the pipes and drums of numerous police departments throughout the United States and Canada, as well as marching bands, drill teams, dance and choral groups, combine their talents in a spectacular display of pageantry and music. The entire community joins together in remembrance, fellowship and celebration to salute our safety forces, our military and our country. The CIT is produced and coordinated by the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial Society (GCPOMS). Each May, the GCPOMS sponsors the Greater Cleveland Police Memorial Commemoration in conjunction with National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15th). West Park Massotherapy: We’re Back! You may recall from the winter issue of this magazine that West Park Massotherapy suffered serious damage in January when a radiator in an upstairs apartment burst wide open and ran all night. The damage was substantial. The drop ceiling had become water laden and collapsed. The carpet was under water. Files and business documents were ruined. The office equipment was trashed. It was a total mess! Two weeks later, the boiler burst! There was no heat in the building, and temperatures were in the single digits. Without heat, no day-to-day business could be conducted and the popular West Park business was closed for several weeks. To make matters worse, insurance did not cover the boiler, nor did it fully cover other damages. The financial strain on the family threatened their home and business. Marilyn Valentino, owner of West Park Massotherapy and its building, is a long time West Park resident and KCDC Business Member. Fortunately, in the community spirit of an old time barn raising, a group of Marilyn’s friends joined together and held a fund raiser on her behalf. The event was christened Neighbors Helping Neighbors and was held on Sunday, March 16, at the Cretan Center. The event was a great success with complimentary chair massages, snacks, refreshments, and music. Marilyn conducted a free “Irish Polka” line dance lesson in honor of St. Patrick’s day. There was a 50-50 raffle and door prizes as well. At the end of the event, Marilyn and her family were presented with the collected funds which were more than expected. It was difficult for her to express the depth of her gratitude and she offers her thanks to the West Park Community below her photo at right. We are glad to have you back, Marilyn! Now get to work! After! Before Marilyn seated at her new desk with Grandaughter Olivia. To my Dear Friends and Neighbors, I wish to thank you all for the overwhelming support you have shown me and my family. The damages to my office were extensive but your generosity helped get us through a very difficult time. Please know that your kindness will never be forgotten and you all hold a special place in my heart! God Bless you all, Marilyn Valentino Who Are These Youths? 5 2 4 6 7 8 3 1 9 We’re curious about this photo, which has been hanging on our wall for some time now. Take a close look at these young people frozen in the year 1983. The place is on Lorain Avenue near Schreibman Jewelers. They’re wearing T-shirts that read: KAMCO Y.O.U. (Youth Opportunity Unlimited), and they’re engaged in a clean up. Do you know who they are? Photographer Chuck Humbert welcomed our use of this photo here to solve the mystery. If you can identify anyone in this photo, please call our office at 216-252-6559, ext. 1600 or e-mail info@kammscorners.com. 31 KCDC Awarded Planning Grant for Rocky River Drive KCDC Board of Trustees Four positions on the Kamm’s Corners Development Corporation Board of Trustees have expiring terms, which are up for renewal this June.
