Photos by Justin Win Winokur Oak Knoll ’ g n i ‘Green School Kids build huge dragon from mbines art trash in project that combines areness and environmental awareness By Marjorie Mader Almanac Staff Writer K ids at Oak Knoll School in Menlo Park recently learned about how much trash they throw out when they helped build a 16-foot long dragon with scales, wings, legs and eyeballs made out of pieces of trash from school lunches. They’ve also learned what’s recyclable and compostable. The “Green Team” of moms came up with the idea of combining art and environmental awareness in a project that involved all of the school’s 735 students (in grades K-5), as well as teachers and parents. Concerned about the huge amount of waste (including uneaten food) that ended up in the trash as students dashed off to play, the Green Team took action. Team leaders Barrett Moore and Bronwyn Dobberstein recruited Kathryn Rone, an artist and coordinator of the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation’s Cultural Kaleidoscope, to help create the “waste” dragon project. She fashioned the dragon’s skeleton by twisting and shaping aluminum pipe. Ms. Rone, along with Oak Knoll art teacher Barbara Cottrell and parent volunteers, worked with students during lunch to attach pieces of trash to the skeleton with cable-ties. The trash was made up of items from the kids’ lunches that can neither be composted or recycled. Typical items included thousands of plastic zip-type sandwich bags, foil-lined chocolate milk cartons, foil beverage pouches and prepared food wrappers. “We’re all learning by sorting (lunch remnants) what’s recyclable, compostable, or trash,” said Sonia Moroder, a parent volunteer. Containers for each type of leftover were placed at lunch areas for kindergartners, first- and secondgraders, and third- through fifth-graders. “This project really opened the children’s eyes,” said Maria Clemo, Oak Knoll’s vice principal. “It raised their awareness and understanding of what trash they can recycle and what they can put in containers for compostables.” Ms. Moore estimated that the lunch waste is down by one-half. Party-day waste is down 80 percent. Joseph Gyan, Oak Knoll’s day custodian, also said there’s a big reduction in the amount of garbage being hauled away from student lunches since the beginning of the project in December. Elaine Sobouti from Allied Waste visited Oak Knoll and talked with students as they worked on the dragon. “Many things can be recycled if they are clean and free of food,” she said. As an example, a cup of yogurt is recyclable if it’s clean, but not if there’s yogurt left in n n the bottom. “If the kids understand w what is waste, they can help their parents send less” les in school lunches rest,”” sa said Ms. Moore. and “take home the rest Some suggestions for parents: have students bring a thermos instead of cans or bottles of beverages; use Tupperware-like containers for food and waxed paper bags for sandwiches; and send half a sandwich, instead of a whole one, to school. Instead of throwing away partially eaten lunches, bring home the container so parents can see what’s being wasted. The students made posters that they sent to food companies, such as Capri Sun, with the message: “We like your product, but not your packaging. It’s not recyclable.” A major change this school year is a new lunch service provider that uses organic food, paper wrapping that’s recyclable instead of plastic wrap, and utensils that are made of potato starch and are biodegradable. Oak Knoll has made some other “green” changes. Each of the 38 classrooms has a set of re-usable dishes, glasses and utensils instead of the usual disposable paper plates and glasses. After Valentine’s Day, Halloween parties, and other events, mothers take home the dishes and utensils, run them through the dishwasher, and return them to school for the next event. The dragon project has been “a wonderful opportunity” to engage lots of kids in an activity on campus that they’ve enjoyed, said Ms. Clemo. A Recycling is easy, says Sobouti of Allied Elaine Sob Services/BFI, if people Waste Serv guide to use the following foll should, and should not, what shoul be recycled. recycled ■ Do recycle: rec mixed paper (white and colored), manila newspapers and folders, new unwanted mail (catainserts, un junk mail), logs, envelopes, envelo magazines, phone books, magazines paperback b k or hardback books, paperboard (cereal and tissue boxes), flattened cardboard, wood pallets. ■ Don’t recycle: food-contaminated paper, blueprints, blue lines, carbon paper; milk cartons and juice boxes (wax coated and unflattened); cardboard, packing materials; tissues and paper towels; black plastic of any type. ■ Do recycle: glass bottles and jars, aluminum and bi-metal cans, plastic bottles and dairy containers coded #1-#7. ■ Don’t recycle: black plastic (any type), plastic buckets, baskets, crates, or carts; Styrofoam (any type); take-out food containers or plastic boxes; nursery plant containers; plastic grocery bags or other film plastics; ceramics, drinking glasses, window glass and mirrors; toys. ■ Do recycle: plastics and food containers that contain the embossed recycling triangle with symbols 1-7. Quite often we have trouble doing this with a straight face because Moose treats the trip over to his bed as if he is on death row, making his last walk to the electric chair. He casts his eyes down and slowly, slowly slinks over to the scene of the crime and quite contritely takes his talking to. Alas, there seems to be no correlation between the amount of guilt the dog feels and whether he repeats the banned activity. He actually seems to have decided that “ziplock bags” equal “good things to eat,” because they often end up in his bed. Recently I found a ziplock bag that had contained five pounds of flour in Moose’s bed. It had been ripped open (there was of course, flour everywhere) but not eaten. He’s not that stupid! Please join us for an exclusive trunk show Friday, April 25th 12 to 6 and Saturday, April 26th 11 to 4 ©2008 Michael Beaudry, Inc. W e like to think that Moose, our 5-yearold chocolate Labrador retriever, is unusually intelligent. After all, Moose has a vocabulary of dozens of words. He knows the usual ones: walk, ball, dog food, sit, stay. But he also knows that “not for dogs” means wherever we’re going he can’t come and he might as well not even try; that “it’s 5 o’clock” means someone will now feed him, and that “no ball” means he must stop dropping slobbered-on tennis balls onto laps, right now. I’ve also been told that Moose has convinced friends or neighbors who have stopped by when we’re not home to either take him on a walk or feed him. First he’s conveyed that he’s either starving or about to explode from lack of exercise, then showed them, when questioned, where we keep the leash and the dog food. (He also has tricked family members into feeding him more than once a night with a similar routine.) BARBARA WOOD But if he’s so smart, we wonder, why does he always get caught when he misbehaves? We always know when Moose has done something he knows he’s not supposed to, such as filching a loaf of bread someone carelessly left on the kitchen counter right where the dog couldn’t help smelling it. He drops his head, casts his eyes to the floor and then looks up, appearing to be pleading, “Please, don’t beat me too hard this time.” Of course, the worst punishment this dog has ever received is a stern talking to or, if he was really, really bad: banishment to a place where we aren’t for several minutes straight. When Moose gives us the guilty look, we know from experience to head straight to his bed in the family room, where he always hides the evidence of his wrongdoing. It’s there we’ll Open: 11-6 Tue-Fri, Sat: 11-4:30 A Barbara Wood is a freelance writer, photographer and gardener from Woodside. Her column runs (usually) the third week of the month. By Katie Blanenberg H ave you ever wondered what it would be like to be principal of your school? On Friday, April 11, Teresa Tiso, a fifth-grader at St. Raymond School in Menlo Park, had that opportunity. Sister Ann Bernard stepped aside for the day and Teresa became St. Raymond’s principal. Last fall, Teresa’s parents Kathleen and Fred Tiso placed the winning bid for this item at the St. Raymond Casino Royale Auction of 2007. Teresa planned many enjoyable activities for the students, including a free dress day (when you Photo by JoAnna Marasco don’t have St. Raymond kindergartners give to the “My New Red Shoes” to wear the organization. They are all long-term players who have played with big bands, small groups, or as individuals. The leader, John Robbins, told me why he started the group. “After retirement I wanted to get back into banjo-playing, and the Little Store is located about three minutes from my home,” he says. “It has the perfect atmosphere for playing happy banjo music in a casual setting.” His father played the banjo in San Francisco in the 1920s as part of a vaudeville act with another banjo player, he says. “I learned to play from him while I was a student at UC Berkeley in the 1950s.” The Banjo Guys play a variety of music, including sing-a-long songs, Dixieland, Cole Porter, as well as older movie classics. The typical fan comes for dinner and drinks, and stays for the music, often for the entire two hours they play. The fans tend to be split into two groups: young parents whose 2-to-6-year-old kids love the music; and fans old enough to remember when banjo music was popular. I asked John Robbins what was one of the most memorable experiences he had while playing. He says that it was when a Southern Californian woman came up to him and asked if he could play, “Peg O’ My Heart.” When we did, she walked up to him and said, “That was the worst rendition of that song I have ever heard.” Then she turned and walked away. Not a great way to end an evening! But if you are seeking fun, frolic and music on a Monday night after a hard weekend, go to the Little Store (at 3340 Woodside Road) from 6 to 8 p.m. and listenup. A recent sale of mine illustrates my answer to that question perfectly. A newly constructed home on a large lot in a prime West Menlo Park location was recently put on the market. It toured for Realtor’s on a Tuesday with 175 agents coming through. By the end of the week we had four offers and the home sold for considerably over the asking price.
