In addition to sustaining native plants
and wildlife, the native gardens conserve
water and include only a limited lawn,
if any lawn at all — a requirement that
Palo Alto’s “Nix-the-Turfgrass Garden”
epitomizes.
Only a year ago, Nix-the-Turfgrass’s
owner, Pamela Chesavage, had a front
lawn full of grass. “Nobody used it,” she
said, adding that it soaked up “a ton of
water.”
Now, instead of struggling to maintain
the little-used and water-addicted grass
patch, Chesavage enjoys strolling on a
sunny stone path through her home’s front
plots — a paradise of California natives
such as fragrant coyote mint, Verbena lilacina, pink currants and more.
“A lot of people install plants that look
good. We installed plants that look good
and are low-water,” Chesavage said.
Perhaps her garden’s best asset in addition to attracting fluttering butterflies,
birds and insects is the fact that the garden’s installation costs were virtually
covered.
“The Santa Clara Valley Water Rebate
program paid for all our plants, the redwood mulch, the permeable hardscape.
...We got upwards of $500 for the front
lawn,” she said, referring to the Water
Efficient Landscape Rebate Program
offered by the Santa Clara Valley Water
District, which compensates homeowners
for each square foot of replaced grass.
Like other gardener hosts, Chesavage
will be at her home garden to talk with
visitors about setting up a native garden.
During the tour, additional volunteers
will also act as docents to answer questions.
Visitors create their own itineraries for
tour day, fitting in several gardens or just
one or two. Photos, descriptions and even
plant lists of each garden are available
at GoingNativeGardenTour.org. Click
“2008 Tour Gardens” in the left column
and click on each garden’s name to preview the different garden sites’ photos,
descriptions and plant lists.
Registration on the Web site is free
— but mandatory — for admission to
the gardens on tour day. Only registered
guests will receive notification of garden addresses and find out which garden
sites will offer native plant sales during
the tour.
On tour day, street parking will be limited. Tour organizers recommend visitors
carpool if possible and be prepared to
walk short distances to each garden.
Some gardens may be more accessible
to persons with disabilities than other
gardens. Organizer Kumar encourages
interested parties to register for the tour
and then communicate with the individual garden owners via e-mail regarding the
garden’s ease of access.
In addition to the Going Native Garden
Tour, the California Native Plant Society
is hosting a native plant sale on April 12 at
Hidden Villa Ranch in Los Altos Hills. ■

Garden tips for April
Spring inspires a summer veggie garden
A

perfect
month to start
your summer
vegetable garden. The soil
has warmed
enough for
the
n ew
root growth
needed and
the weather is mild for the new baby
plants.
Here are the tips:
1. Begin with the soil. A rich, deep,
weed-free, gopher-proof bed takes
some planning and some work but is
the best way to get the best crop. If
you don’t know how to make a good
soil, you can always excavate and buy
soil.
2. Prevent pests and disease before
they have a chance to get your new
plants. Cage your beds against gophers and use floating row covers to
protect from birds and insects.
3. Snails and slugs are professional

baby-plant eaters. Pick them regularly.
I mean every day. If you don’t want
to kill them, fine, relocate them to
someplace where it will take them at
least a month to get back. Repeat often
because they will come back.
4. Grow what you will eat. There
is no reason to grow more than one
habanero pepper plant. One of them
will last a long time.
5. Start some greens in your garden.
Swiss chard provides fresh greens to
cook all year round. If you want baby
greens, get some spring mix seeds
and grow them in protected beds for
five weeks.
6. Tomatoes are best planted in
April. Small plants that are planted
now will equal or pass up big plants
that were planted earlier.
7. Plant some basil with your tomatoes, or plant some cilantro and
jalapenos to go with them.
8. If you grow squash, plant one
of each of several varieties. Harvest
the blossoms and the baby squash if
the plants are prolific. The blossoms
make wonderful wraps for delicate
meats and fish and the baby squash
are great in salads and omelets. The
ones that get big will have more room
and you won’t be sick of eating squash
by the time they are mature.
9. Unless you have lots of property
I would pass on pumpkins. There are
plenty of growers here on the coast
and many varieties to choose from.
If you do want to go for it then use
the biggest or rarest of varieties. The
novelty will make the effort worthwhile.
10. Tend your garden regularly. If
you are out there helping grow the
plants, pulling weeds and tending to
problems, you will grow along with
them and the whole world will be a
better place.

The Silicon Valley REALTORS® Charitable
Foundation awarded $12,650 in grants in
February to various nonprofit organizations
that help the needy and underprivileged in
Palo Alto and the surrounding areas. The
grants were presented to My Red Shoes
($2,500), Project Read ($2,500), Stevenson
House ($2,500), Friends for Youth ($2,500),
Christmas Bureau ($2,000) and Community
Gardens as Appleseeds ($650).
My New Red Shoes provides
new school clothing to
underprivileged children. The
Charitable Foundation grant
will support the Clothing
for Confidence program,
which will provide 1,500
disadvantaged children with
$50 gift cards to clothing
retailers. In addition, 500 of
these children will receive a
brand new pair of shoes.

software that teaches reading, spelling,
and pronunciation on its new Macintosh
computers.
The Adlai E. Stevenson House in Palo Alto
has provided housing for low- and verylow-income senior citizens since 1968. The
Charitable Foundation’s grant will help
repair the radiant heating system in one of
the buildings.
Friends for Youth has established oneto-one mentoring relationships between
youth-in-need and adults to improve the
lives of individuals and the community. The
