If you ever thought that you couldn’t do it then

– from trekking unaided to the South Pole to
enjoying morning tea with Sir Edmund Hilary!
Described as adventurous, determined and
goal-oriented, Kevin’s journey proves that he is
all that and – more! You’ll be amazed at his
inspirational life story and come away believing
that anything is possible.

Links Between Learning
and Landscapes
✪ Jill Rice
Landscape Architect, Get Outside Ltd
Jill asks the question, "How can the outdoor
environment of a school best contribute to
children’s learning?” She is a firm believer in the
Reggio Emilia concept that “the environment is
the third teacher”, and she will discuss the notion
that offering children well-designed environments,
and involving them in the design and
management of their own outdoor areas can
inspire and empower all ages and abilities as
learners. Jill will confirm the important role of the
property manager with plenty of examples of
student projects and practical points to consider
when developing a management plan for your
own outdoor environments.

Communication Across Cultures
✪ Desirée Williamson
Communication Works
In addition to embracing our bi-cultural heritage,
New Zealand workplaces have the opportunity
to capitalise on the creativity, skills and resources
of our multicultural communities. However, not
everyone shares the same world view and this
difference in perception influences all of our
workplace communication. This session will
introduce tools that will enhance your crosscultural competency in your daily exchanges
with colleagues, students and their caregivers
whose first language is not English.
Topics will include:
• recognise the New Zealand cultural view
in your workplace;
• discover ways in which we ‘signal’ culture
through perception, context, language,
hierarchy and gender;
• discuss practical ways for saving face and
promoting cross-cultural understanding in
your workplace.
✪ Michael Coulter

Learn which types of trees, shrubs and plants are
most suitable for planting around schools, how
to maintain and prune plants for best effect, and
