Greater Waterbury
YMCA At-a-glance
2012 has been a whirlwind of dynamic and energetic progress and
collaboration at the Greater Waterbury YMCA. The Y was able to
reach out in service to Hurricane Sandy victims by distributing donated
goods to those in need, and also the families of Sandy Hook and the
Newtown community through a basketball fundraiser. We realized the
dream of giving our neighborhood kids their first bicycle and a safe day
to ride downtown with our Waterbury on Wheels event, in which we
collaborated with over 20 other agencies and businesses for success.
The YMCA was again the center of the action downtown during the first
ever “Fireball Run” for missing children and provided support and hosted
a large-scale scavenger hunt for participants of the event. Our members
continued to build solid relationships and health through YMCA running
and Triathlon programs that have grown twicefold since their inception.
Our YMCA Camp Mataucha was able to invest over $100,000 dollars
into amenities and infrastructure, which has allowed better outbuildings,
storage of equipment and camper safety. The Y also held its first
women’s retreat at beautiful YMCA Camp Mataucha, and taught 35
women the art of self confidence, relaxation and health. We were able
to increase programming opportunities in the Southbury community
with Youth and Government at Pomperaug High School as well as youth
sports at YMCA Camp Oakasha.
Finally at the end of 2012 The Greater Waterbury YMCA became a
Livestrong at the Y program site, largely due to the votes of our members
and community. The Y is now able to provide a 12-week cancer survivor
health and wellness program free of charge to 12 participants each session.
Our brick building is truly a community center, overflowing with life,
activity and positive energy centered around Youth Development, Healthy
Living and Social Responsibility. We are living our cause every single day
at the Y and enjoying the fruits of that labor in the smiles of our friends,
neighbors, and kids that pass through these historic hallways.
Future Initiatives
After aligning the support of the Southbury community, the Greater
Waterbury YMCA will be proudly beginning the planning process
for expanded services in the area. The Y will also be revitalizing and
partnering with the City of Waterbury’s Housing Authority Berkeley
Warner Recreation Center in the North End. Expanded youth programming
and afterschool activities will grow and stabilize one of the most
vulnerable areas for youth in our city. Our decorated and recognized
staff team will be leading all New England Livestrong at the YMCA
cohorts through intensive cancer specialized training and mentoring.
The future continues to hold promise for the YMCA cause in the
Greater Waterbury community.
open doors
In 2012 the Y awarded Financial Assistance to nearly 500 families at a
value of over $250,000. YMCA membership and programs are available
to all through the YMCA Open Doors Program for qualifying individuals.
The YMCA Open Doors program provides financial assistance for camp,
childcare, membership and programs. Open Doors allows all people of
our community to have access to Healthy Living, Youth Development
and Social Responsibility at the YMCA regardless of their ability to pay.

Livestrong at the YMCA
In 2012 the Greater Waterbury
YMCA began some of its
most cause driven work in
the community.
After securing the votes of members, friends and community
supporters to bring the exceptional Livestrong at the YMCA
program to Waterbury, the Greater Waterbury YMCA was
chosen as one of 9 program sites in the state of Connecticut.
The real work began with our pilot program of participants
and was preceded by an intensive staff training to prepare
YMCA staff to be not only sensitive and understanding to
survivors, but to offer best in class exercise programming
to those challenged with the treatments and setbacks
of cancer recovery.
about their experience with this awful disease is not only
helpful, but somewhat cathartic. The entire group, instructors
included, are so supportive of each other and spend their
workout sessions chatting and laughing. Variety was added
into the program such as Zumba, Tai Chi and Spinning classes
in addition to the strength and cardio, which everyone took
part in and tried for the first time.
The positive outcomes of Livestrong at the YMCA are
plentiful! In addition to being stronger, participants have
reported less back pain, less knee pain, less shoulder pain,
(all ailments mentioned during their intakes), notice
improvements in their
flexibility, and say everyday
tasks like walking up stairs
is easier. In fact, a pancreatic
cancer survivor recently
reported that she is officially
in remission! Her doctor said
all tests came back “perfect!” - good cholesterol, blood pressure,
blood sugar and all clear of cancer.
The main goal has been to help each survivor return to their “old
normal,” and when we see the smiles on their faces as they achieve
things they didn’t think they were capable of post-treatment, we
know we are doing just that. Livestrong at the YMCA has been a
learning experience for everyone involved, from our staff to the
family members accompanying the survivors. We are all better
at the Greater Waterbury YMCA for being part of something much
bigger than cancer, we are are part of LIVING!
Our LIVESTRONG instructors meet
with our survivors twice a week
and work with each one within
a structured strength and cardio
program that also includes
opportunities for meditation and
sharing. Participants may have
varied forms of cancer and find

married 50 years
growing better together
Richard and Hannelore, married 50 years, are a welcome
addition to the Greater Waterbury YMCA. Their story began
when Richard was recovering from some health setbacks at a
local physical therapy clinic which closed. Richard was making
some pretty good progress with his mobility there, so they
began shopping for a new wellness facility and that’s when
the Y became part of their lives.
“I can remember being a camper in 1946 and a rack-body truck
would take about 10 or 12 of us out to Camp Mataucha, it would
pick us up right at the side door of the Y on Park Place. It was
a different time then,“ said Richard when asked if the Y had always
been part of his life.
“We come to the Y five days a week in the mornings, and we’ve
never missed a single day. The best part for us has been
establishing a very consistent routine of daily exercise.
We do take the weekends off though,“ laughs Hannelore.
Richard and Hannelore very much enjoy the happy smiling faces
of the members and staff each day at the Y and say that it’s great
to see people that they’ve known for years. Richard is a vet, and
sees other veterans here and appreciates the collective positive
attitude of all that come to the Y. They can most often be spotted
on the treadmills, and Richard uses some of the leg machines
to strengthen his knees performing some exercises that Y staff
taught him. A favorite part of the day at the Y, is seeing Richard
and Hannelore resting together in our lobby area. They often sit
quietly sipping a coffee and chatting with staff and members that
pass by. They’ve become part of the Y family.
Five years ago, Richard was diagnosed with type II diabetes and
also had a bout with spinal stenosis and high blood pressure.
Since becoming very physically active on a regular basis at the
Y, he has been able to come off of all his medications and his
mobility has made almost a complete turnaround.
Hannelore says that without the YMCA in their lives they would
most likely be couch potatoes, and not as healthy. They get to
socialize at the Y and it “Puts structure into our lives.”

“I’ve been coming to the Y for the past few years with
my Aunt Marla. I was sad about it at first, because I’d
have to go into ChildWatch with all of the little kids, but
then the Youth and Teen Wellness Center opened. I love
going there because the staff member is fun, athletic,
and a good role model, he always does the right thing.
I play games there, exercise on the treadmill and the
climbing wall. Before the Y I was only exercising a little
bit. When I first started coming to the YMCA I felt
awkward going to ChildWatch. Then I met Kristin and
Andrew and some other staff. They were friendly and
played with me and made me more at ease. I really like
art and they encouraged me to draw and create while
I was spending time in ChildWatch. I really love art and
want to go to the Waterbury Arts Magnet School.
I love just hanging out at the Y and seeing my friends
and the people that work there. Life would be different
if I weren’t coming to the Y. I wouldn’t be exercising
or meeting new people. Coming to the Y helps me feel
more like myself.”

Cancer Survivor, Livestrong

I still have my days, but because of Livestrong at
the Y, I don’t just stay in the house. I get out and do
the things I want to do. I’ve even started riding my
motorcycle again, which is something I really enjoy.
“My experience at the Y began when I got a blood
infection and had to see the doctor as an uninsured
patient. I’ve had a tumor behind my eye since I was
in my twenties, and it was kept under watch for a
long time, but after having diabetes for the last 15
years or so and some other health issues, it was
under scrutiny. After some scans I found out that
my entire left eye and some of the bone around it
would need to be removed in order to remove the
cancerous tumor behind it.
I have some goals now. I’d like to stay healthy
for the summer and be able to walk or maybe even
jog a marathon someday soon. It’s day-to-day.
My stamina is better and my endurance will get
there. My life would be different if it weren’t for
the YMCA. I’d probably still be sitting in my room
all day looking out of the window instead of living
life. After the program ended, the Y enrolled me in
the Open Doors membership program for my whole
family, which makes it really affordable for us. On
weekends, when I have my kids, I’m able to share the
Y with them.
Anthony Ross
All of this was coming not long after a divorce and
move from my home. So there I was, 47 years old,
disabled with cancer, unable to work and living
back at my parents’ house. I became very, very
depressed and wouldn’t leave the house. The
doctors said I had a 50/50 chance of survival,
and I recovered quickly from the surgery, and was
even able to drive not long after. Despite my quick
recovery, I missed the daily routine of going to work
and being myself. I had 37 radiation treatments
over 3.5 months and still am not 100% in the clear,
although I hope to hear good news soon. My doctor
thought it would be a good idea for me to join the
Livestrong at the YMCA program, and it has been
the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.
Through Livestrong and even now after the
program, I come to the Y five or six days a week.
The Livestrong at the Y program gave me purpose
and a reason to get out of the house again. I can’t
say enough about the staff running the program, all
of them are such good people. Everyone at the Y is
friendly and I actually feel so comfortable there that
I don’t wear my prosthetic eye. The Y is the only
place that I’ll do that. Before, I was so depressed
that I was prescribed sleeping pills. I’ve thrown

Odalis Arias
41 year old Member, lost over 100 pounds
“I’ve been a member of the Waterbury YMCA for about 3 years, and at first I wasn’t
really that serious about coming. I had actually fallen asleep twice and awoken to
myself choking, which scared me into wanting to lose weight. After that, and seeing
some of my friends succeeding at the Y, I decided that if they could do it, so could
I. I had actually previously had two operations on my back, one of them a fusion.
I couldn’t even tie my own shoes, everything was slow and felt like a chore. It was
time to get serious.
I felt supported at the Y, and comfortable. I knew that I could ask questions and
learn what I needed to know, so I started with strength training followed by cardio.
My wife, Johanna, soon got involved also and helped me even more by improving
our family diet through a commitment to clean eating. To date, I’ve been able to
lose 105 pounds, Johanna has lost 96 pounds and one of our children has also
lost over 40 pounds. The Y has changed our whole family dynamic, we all stay
focused on our health and enjoy feeling so much better together.
I used to be on high blood pressure and cholesterol medication, but after remaining
so focused on my goals at the Y, I was able to come off of all medication
and obtain a clean bill of health from my
doctor. I’ve recently also stopped smoking
which is my next ultimate health goal.
It’s amazing, I feel like a completely new
person and I have a new outlook on
my life.
I love that I can come to the Y and
that it is affordable for us.
I don’t know that we could
have committed to this
lifestyle without the
YMCA Open Doors
Program. It really feels
great to walk through
the door to people that
really care. It’s neighborly,
not uptight. If it weren’t
for the YMCA I’d still be
unhealthy, drinking, being
lazy, probably worse off
than before. It’s been the
best thing for us, a 360
degree change. I lost over
100 pounds at the Greater
Waterbury YMCA and I hope
my story inspires others to
do the same!”
