Barriers provide power limitations on intrinsically safe circuits this range of shunt-diode safety barriers provide a seamless integration of the safe area equipment to the hazardous area products. Designed for use (with the appropriate shuntdiode safety barrier) in potentially explosive atmospheres and harsh environmental conditions Cooper Safety Fire Systems offer a range of fully compliant callpoints, smoke, heat and flame detection. The Cooper Safety Fire Systems range of ATEX compliant audio visual devices offer robust construction and high IP rating and are suitable for inclusion in hazardous area installations. • Comprehensive range What is Intrinsically Safe? Selecting Components As its name implies, intrinsic safety refers to equipment and wiring that is inherently safe, i.e. a system with energy levels so low they cannot cause an explosion. This is typically achieved through the use of isolating barriers; either diode barriers or isolated barriers that limit energy to a hazardous (potentially flammable) area. Barriers are a key component because they limit the energy to the hazardous area. Diode barriers provide a simple method for implementing intrinsic safety but their primary drawback is they must be connected to a dedicated Intrinsically Safe earth or ground, which may introduce problems such as electrical noise on the control signal and they may introduce earth monitoring faults. Hazardous Area Classification Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on an assessment of the frequency of the occurrence and duration of an explosive gas atmosphere, as follows: Category Description Zone 0 An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods. Zone 1 An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation. Zone 2 An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short time. By contrast, isolated barriers provide electrical isolation for anything connected to them, so there is no need for a dedicated earth / ground. To overcome these issues correctly the following solutions have been provided to ensure correct application of the relevant equipment.
