Technology and Software for Language Learning http://www.language-learning-advisor.com/language-learning-product-reviews.html Look online at one or more websites that have promotional information about software and technology for language learning. I chose to look at Rosetta Stone because I was curious about how useful it would be to English Language Learners. I’ve seen the product being sold at kiosks in the mall, but never paid any attention. For the technology you investigated, post the following information for the class: Which software did you investigate? Rosetta Stone What theoretical perspective on language learning does this software use? Visual, oral, immersion, trial and error without translation What do you think are the pros and cons of this particular software? The product appears to provide basic information for beginners in the language. On the other side, the product does not appear to help the language 32 learner get to a higher level of the language and there is no translation there is no cultural information about the countries of the native language. Do I agree or disagree with the online review? There were many, many reviews of this product. One review in particular stated that if you love to travel, then Rosetta Stone is helpful in learning conversational language. However, if you need to speak another language for business purposes, then Rosetta Stone might not be the best product. What software is available for ELLs (at Smitha Middle School)? Read 180, Skills Tutor, Oxford Picture Dictionary What do they think about it? Read 180 seems to be very good. It uses guided interest level reading and supports the learning of reading. It is delivered in centers. I have never used the product. Skills Tutor is used on a regular basis and so is the Oxford Picture Dictionary. I discussed this software with my mentor, Derek Kamal who has used all of this software at one time or another believes that all of the products are helpful to students learning English. What other technology could you envision using with ELLS? Tony Vicent of “Learning in Hands” talks about using IPads to create stories, listen to stories, make presentations, develop and listen to Podcasts. This would make the learner use reading, writing, listening and speaking in a hands on fashion. Look online at one or more websites that have promotional information about software and technology for language learning (ideally, ESL)—for instance: Rosetta Stone, Tell Me More, Transparent Language, Byki, Pimsleur, Imagine Learning, etc. If a demo is available, or your school has, try it. What theoretical perspective on language learning does this software use (this may be explicitly stated, or you may have to read between the lines)? The company says that the software builds nouns and verbs to make complete sentences and this software also includes national and state standards. It focuses on the proficiency levels of ESL listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 33
