ith every new technology comes promises
of greater performance, better cosmetics,

o is Cold Cathode technology just another
cheap trick on the part of manufacturers in an
ever more competitive market or is it a genuine
leap forward in mobile lighting systems?
What is Cold Cathode:
cold cathode light is basically a tubular light
that works by passing an electrical current
through a gas or vapor, much like Neon lighting.
Nothing new here!
The main diference is as the name sugests the
different “Cathode” system.
ut what is a cathode I hear you ask? A
“Cathode” is an electrode that emits electrons.
When used in a normal gas discharge lighting
system like a fluorescent tube or neon tube, the
cathode is heated to create a “Hot Cathode”. The
heat created causes electron radiation emission
from the cathode. This passes through the tube and
illuminates the gas (Ionization) as it is drawn by the
differentiation in voltage to the other end of the
tube. Because the voltage in this system after the
transformer is alternating (AC) both ends act as an
anode (Pos) and cathode (Neg) in turn.
n a hot cathode system it is completely reliant on
the heating effect of the cathode (at one end)
and thus can be difficult to start (often requiring
a ballast and all sorts of starting strategies). When
the heating is not quite up to scratch problems
become evident. The advantage of a hot cathode
is that the voltage transformer circuitry is kept
relatively simple in terms of current regulation and
voltage levels.
owever, the down side is that it is also prone to
premature failure, where the tell-tail signs of a
strobing tube appear towards the end of its often
too short life.

Cold cathode technology has many advantages
over neon and fluorescent lighting.
o make a gas discharge tube work without a
hot cathode, higher voltages are employed.
In addition to that a different gas, different tube
coating and some rare earth coatings on both
cathodes at each end of the tube are also used. This
higher voltage can cause a strong electric field near
the cathodes but generally causes no problems to
nearby equipment.
he combination of higher voltage coupled with
the special interior surface of cold cathode lights
produce secondary electrons at a ratio greater than
1 to 1 (Free amplification! Yippie!) upon electron
and ion impact. This results in a brighter illumination
for a given amount of energy input and no need to
heat up a cathode.
old cathode lighting may be often compared
with Neon lighting because of its appearance
but there is simply no comparison when you view
them side by side. A cold cathode lamp provides
a higher lumen output with lower current draw and
outlasts all other neon and fluorescent lighting
systems on the market today. Cold cathode lamps
are not affected by on/off cycles, a factor which
greatly impacts the life expectancy of a fluorescent
style lamp.
