International students are attracted to Adelaide for many reasons and
whether it’s for the academic excellence or quality lifestyle, Adelaide
offers clear benefits.
Adelaide has all the hallmarks of a major
cosmopolitan centre with modern and
classical architecture, a bustling retail
hub, multicultural population and a busy
calendar of internationally acclaimed
festivals and events. Set on the banks of
the River Torrens, the city is surrounded by parkland, nestled between long sandy
beaches to the west and the leafy
Adelaide Hills to the east. Adelaide is
Australia’s fifth largest city and while it
offers the facilities and amenities that
afford an outstanding lifestyle and
education, the city of just over one million
people offers a more relaxed, friendly vibe
than Australia’s larger cities.
Accessibility
Getting to and around Adelaide is easy.
There are direct flights to Adelaide from
major Asian airports and all Australian
mainland capital cities. The city is served
by a state-of-the art international airport
which is the fastest growing in Australia
for international services. Adelaide has
plenty of interstate coach services and is the hub for Australia’s rail network. The city centre, which is home to most
educational institutions, is compact and
perfect for walking around as it is safe,
flat and easy to navigate due to its
well-planned grid design. Public transport
is very convenient and affordable - there
are even free tram, bus and bicycle hire
services operating in the city centre.
Adelaide is known as a ‘20 minute city’
because within 20 minutes by car from
the city centre are magnificent beaches,
and the wine and wildlife of the beautiful
Adelaide Hills.
Affordability
Adelaide is the most affordable Australian
capital city. It costs approximately 20%
more to live in Melbourne or Sydney, and
approximately 5% more to live in Brisbane
or Perth. This means students on a budget
can afford to enjoy more of what Australia
has to offer in Adelaide. Accommodation,
food and public transport costs are lower,
with international students receiving the
same discounted fares as local students.
Importantly for international students with
children, the South Australian Government
offers the lowest public education costs for
dependants of international students in the country, and a generous program of reduced and waived fees for eligible visa holders and courses.
Authentic Australia
Adelaide has quintessential Australian
experiences right on its doorstep. South
Australia boasts many world-famous wine
regions and brands, with the Barossa,
Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale wine
regions all within about an hour of
Adelaide. Wildlife experiences are also a highlight, whether it’s cuddling a koala at an Adelaide Hills wildlife park just 20
minutes from Adelaide or exploring the
nature paradise of Kangaroo Island or the
rugged outback. South Australia’s 3,700
kilometres of coastline provide plenty of
water activities such as swimming with
sea lions and dolphins, surfing, diving,
boating, fishing and whale-watching. The Murray River, part of Australia’s largest
river system, winds its way through the
state providing opportunities for house
boating and water sports. For sport lovers
there are ample opportunities to either
participate in university or community
clubs, or spectate at iconic venues such as Adelaide Oval, cheering on at a game of Aussie Rules football, cricket or soccer.
Safety and Quality of Life
Adelaide has been ranked the fifth most
liveable city in the world. This reflects the
city’s safety, affordability, access to nature,
air quality, lack of traffic congestion,
international connectivity, quality
transport and healthcare, political and
economic stability, and ideal climate. In
addition, Adelaide is Australia’s safest city
with the lowest levels of crime per capita.
Food and Dining
Adelaide is famous for its surrounding
food and wine regions, and the climate is
perfect for outdoor dining most of the
year. There is so much choice, even on a
budget! So many cultures are at home in
Adelaide that all tastes are easily catered
for. Adelaide features a vibrant food and
dining scene with more than 700
restaurants, pubs and cafés serving food
from around the world. Adelaide’s Central
Market is a favourite with international
students and locals for its amazingly
fresh, diverse and affordable produce,
along with nearby bustling Chinatown.

Academic Excellence
Adelaide is the Nobel Prize capital of Australia, associated with five Nobel
Laureates and hundreds of Rhodes
Scholars. Our institutions, among
Australia’s oldest and most prestigious,
are dedicated to research and innovation
for global needs. For more than 170 years
this city has provided students with the
education that allows them to follow
their dreams.
The University of Adelaide, Flinders
University and the University of South
Australia consistently rate highly in
international higher education rankings
and surveys of student satisfaction. In
fact South Australia is the only Australian
state in which all of its public universities
appear on one or more of the major three international ranking systems and South Australian universities sit
firmly in the top 10% across the globe.
These Australian public universities have
now been joined by two specialised
campuses of prestigious international
universities - Carnegie Mellon University
and University College London – and a
new private Australian university, Torrens
University. These additional universities
have reinforced Adelaide’s reputation as a true ‘education hub’. Adelaide’s success
as a city of learning is due to a history of excellence combined with a clear
understanding of modern trends and
expectations.
Research
An emphasis on research collaboration
has seen Adelaide’s universities host or participate in more than half of
Australia’s prestigious Cooperative
Research Centres. For postgraduate
students, that provides opportunities to work alongside researchers of
international renown. South Australia’s
results in the most recent national review
of research standards were excellent, with
85% of assessed disciplines rated as ‘at or above world standard’, with many well above world standard.
Student Support
When they arrive, students receive a
welcome bag which includes a guide to the city and details of a year-long
program of welcoming, social and career
activities including official welcome
ceremonies, sporting matches, arts events,
employment seminars and regional tours.
International students receive extra
resources including help with English and assignments. StudyAdelaide’s
international student Facebook page
provides an excellent network for student interaction and support.
Student Accommodation
Student accommodation is very
affordable and much of it is located in the vibrant heart of Adelaide. About 4000
students live in and around Adelaide’s city
centre, just minutes from some of our
major education institutions. Options
include purpose-built student
apartments, residential colleges, oncampus accommodation, private rental
and homestay. Students under 18 years of age can choose to stay at a boarding
school or are matched with a supportive
host family. See page 26 for more
information.
Courses in Adelaide have strong ties with industry and research, creating
opportunities for valuable networking
and work placements. Postgraduate
coursework and research Degrees
(Masters and Doctoral) are offered across a broad range of academic fields by high-quality teaching staff among the best in their respective fields.

Resources and Energy
South Australia is richly endowed with
mineral, oil, gas, and renewable energy
resources. Global demand for minerals
and energy resources continues to
increase and South Australia’s resources
are located in close proximity to many of
the world’s fastest growing economies.
South Australia has 25% of the world’s
uranium resources and 37% of Australia’s
wind power capacity.
A highly skilled workforce specialised in
technical and scientific areas such as
engineering, geoscience and renewable
energy systems is needed to unlock and
realise the opportunities presented by the State’s abundant natural resources.
Recognising this need, South Australia’s
largest oil and gas producers joined with
the State Government and TAFE SA (South Australia’s largest provider of
Vocational Education and Training) to
establish a state-of-the-art training
facility known as the Onshore Petroleum
Centre of Excellence (OPCE).
The new training facility provides a fully immersive simulated oil and gas
production environment to be used for technical training including safety,
environmental and sustainable
operational principles and maintenance
activities. The training programs delivered
by TAFE SA provide students with the
skills needed by the world’s leading oil
and gas companies.
Adelaide’s universities offer
comprehensive programs up to Masters
level in environmental management,
sustainability, and related policy and
governance issues. Technical streams
cover monitoring technologies, geospatial
science and a specialist program in
carbon management.
Agriculture, Food and Wine
Food and wine is South Australia’s largest
export with high quality grains, wine,
seafood, meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables
grown and produced across the State.
South Australia produces more than 60% of Australia’s wine exports.
Increasing global demand for high quality food and wine, and a strong
reputation for a clean and green
environment are creating significant
opportunities for South Australia’s food
and wine industry.
New Technologies
South Australia’s agriculture, food and
wine workforce needs span from science,
business and people skills to food chain
logistics. The industry is supported by a
wide range of education, training and
research providers.
The University of Adelaide’s Waite
Research Campus is home to 12 worldclass research organisations and centres,
1100 research and technical staff, and
provides education and training to several
hundred students every year undertaking
a range of undergraduate and
postgraduate agricultural science
Degrees. The Waite Campus enjoys an
international reputation for its strengths
in plant science and breeding (particularly
cereal crops), landscape and soil science,
and wine and viticulture research.
Located at the Waite Campus is the
Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI)
which supports the Australian grape and
wine industry through world-class
research, practical solutions and
knowledge transfer. AWRI has a 60-year
history of facilitating the adoption and
application of science in the Australian
wine industry and has been instrumental
in building a culture of experimentation
and innovation which is directly linked to the Australian wine industry’s success.
Health and Medicine
South Australia is a globally recognised
leader in many fields of health research,
ageing and related services and products.
Our universities host two acclaimed
medical schools, three schools of nursing
and the full range of allied health
disciplines from physiotherapy, pharmacy
and speech pathology to the emerging
fields of nutrition, pharmacology and
disability studies.
The development of new technologies is one of South Australia’s greatest
strengths and an area in which we have
diverse interests and expertise. Across
Adelaide’s universities there are research
centres carrying out globally significant
work in new manufacturing methods in
specialised areas such as nanotechnology,
photonics, particle and material
interfaces, radar, telecommunications,
robotics and environmental sustainability.
All three South Australian universities
also offer postgraduate programs in
computing, information technology and
engineering. South Australia is known as Australia’s ‘Defence State’ because it
offers the infrastructure and knowledge
to support many of Australia’s largest
defence projects and companies. Our universities play a vital role in
supporting the sector’s growth.
Water resource management is a
particular strength for South Australia.
The Water Industry Alliance brings
together a combination of organisations
and businesses involved in research and
development, engineering, technology,
manufacturing, education, operations and commercial know-how to develop
efficient and cost effective solutions,
processes and equipment required by global markets. Collectively, Water
Industry Alliance members export A$511 million of South Australian water technology products and water
management services annually, with accumulated exports exceeding
A$2.9 billion.
The new South Australian Health and
Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) is
the centre of South Australia’s Health and
Biomedical Precinct. It has significantly
increased the state’s capacity for leading
research and houses a team of more than
600 researchers, working together in the
search for better treatments and cures for some of the world’s most challenging
diseases. The Institute actively nurtures a new generation of top research minds,
and undertakes extensive and interactive
community engagement and education
programs.

University Pathways
University pathway programs help students on their way to a university
education at one of Adelaide’s renowned institutions. These programs
allow students to get to know Adelaide, improve their English and learn
about Australian culture and university life before they commence
university studies.
Foundation studies prepare students to
enter their first year of a Bachelor Degree
and provide guaranteed entry to
particular universities (upon successful
completion), while other pathway
programs prepare students to enter the
second year of selected Bachelor Degrees.
Pathway providers offer an experience
that is similar to university in terms of
teaching and assessment, and in some
cases offer the opportunity to attend
some university lectures. However classes are generally small and run by
teachers with experience teaching
students for whom English is their second language, which helps to build the confidence of students and prepare
them for university studies.
Entry programs are flexible, allowing
students to start at various times
throughout the year. The following
specialist pathway providers offer a range
of qualifications ranging from Certificate
and Diploma levels through to Associate
