Volume 24
Issue 8
Dear CFHS Parents/Guardians;
This month we celebrate student academic successes, faculty accolades, athletic, and student activities achievements.
First of all, I’d like to congratulate our National Merit Scholarship Finalists:
The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September 2015 have met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition. All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2016. The selection of some 7,400 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 Finalists is now in progress.
In March, NMSC will begin mailing scholarship offers to winners. We are very proud of our NMSC finalists! Finalists in the 2016
Competition for National Merit Scholarships: Sumhith V. Aradhyula, Vincent H. Bai, Liam K. Donovan, Amber Marina Fox, Chloe T.
Harwood, Neil C. Jha, Amy Liu, Lucas A. Petersen.
Secondly, kudos to Social Studies Teacher and Department Chair, Ms. Megan Kirts , who was named to the Educational Advisory
Group (EAG) of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco! The EAG consists of 22 high school and community college educators.
The EAG Fellows work with the Economic Education Group for a period of one year, providing feedback on content area, teaching activities, FRBSF economic education resources, the use of technology, and best practices related to teaching about the Federal
Reserve and the U.S. economy. Ms. Kirts has also been chosen to participate in the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP). TOP seeks to find the best and most qualified social studies and STEM educators and give them the opportunity to experience Modern
Germany in person. Ms. Kirts will spend two weeks in Germany this summer experiencing contemporary German issues relating to the political system, economy, culture, education, and environmental sustainability. Congratulations Ms. Kirts!
On an athletic note, I’d like to congratulate the Boys Basketball team that made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament! They made a deep run but lost to Agua Fria by 3 points in a buzzer-‐beater. It was a great game and a wonderful season full of excitement!

Strategic Plan Update:
What are Data Teams?
March 2016
What is a Data Team?
Your child may have heard their teachers talk about “Data Teams,” or you may have read, in the Falcon Flyer , or in our CFHS
Strategic Plan, about Data Teams. Our plan relies heavily on the teamwork of teachers within these teams: our teachers meet for a combined 1150 hours over the school year to do Data Team work together. This is a significant endeavor. But you may not know what a
Data Team is, how it is structured, or how it works. We thought we’d take some time to explain this structure in which we have invested so much time and energy.
A data team is a small, grade-level, department, course-alike, or organizational team that examines student work, and collaborates together to improve student learning. As John Hattie puts it in his book, Visible Learning for Teachers , “the most critical success factor in any school” is a shared understanding among teachers. He attributes this to “the power of teachers learning from and talking to each other about planning – learning intentions, success criteria, what is valuable learning, progression, what it means to be “good at” a subject” (60).
Our Data Teams enable our teachers to do just this.
How are Data Teams structured?
At CFHS, almost all of our Data Teams are organized by course, so that teachers who teach the same course can collaborate together to address the most worthy goals for their students - those crucial areas of skills and knowledge that students need to develop to succeed in the aims of the course itself. This year, because of the nature of our strategic plan, we have also created teams of freshman teachers, in order to focus on the issues that our freshman students encounter here at the high school.
All Data Teams have a focus that is shaped by the strategic plan’s goals.
English Data Teams are focusing on Literacy Goals; Social Studies and Science teams focus on Transfer Goals; World Languages, Kinetic Wellness, Fine Arts,
Special Education, and Freshman Data Teams are working on building Academic
Mindset Goals; and the Math Data Teams are work together on Numeracy Goals.
What do teachers do together as Data Teams?
These teams meet at least 14 times over the course of the school year. We follow a structure pioneered by Richard DuFour, in which “a small team meets a minimum of every two or three weeks and uses an explicit, data-driven structure to disaggregate data, analyze student performance, set incremental goals, engage in dialogue around explicit and deliberate instruction, and create a plan to monitor student learning and teacher instruction” (Hattie 60). This is also known as the Data Team process.
If you were to attend a Data Team meeting, you might see: teachers poring over student assessments, identifying specific strengths and weaknesses, or moves that student authors have made that are worthy of repeating and holding up as examples; teachers brainstorming different ways to teach a difficult concept which their students have struggle to grasp; teachers designing an intervention for a small group of students who still haven’t mastered a core skill, even as the rest of the class moves on; teachers analyzing data - just how many of their students improved from assessment to assessment? -- or teachers crafting extensions for the few students who quickly display proficiency.
Ideally, all of this work leads to a shared understanding: about our subject areas, about excellence in student work, about pedagogy, about our goals, and most importantly, about our students.

Course Selection for 2016-17
Students continuing at CFHS for 2016-17 school year are requesting their classes for next year. Students received a Course Selection Info Sheet, a Course Request Form, and a copy of their transcript in their February 29
Advisory. Teachers reviewed curriculum options and assisted students in their choices through March 6, and counselors were available in the cafeteria during lunches throughout the week to answer questions. Students were asked to enter their course requests through VUE before 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 6, and counselors are meeting with students March 7-11 during designated math classes to review their online course selection and compare it to the teacher and parent signed Course Request Form. Students and parents may review the course selection materials on the CFHS website. Posted materials include the 2016-17 Course Guide, the Course
Request Form, the Course Selection Info Sheet (includes instructions for entering requests in VUE), and an informational podcast.
Scholarship Resources:
There are several specialized databases available for students to search for scholarships. Students can create a profile and review scholarships posted at fastweb.com, scholarships.com, salliemae.com, and many others. Mrs.
Graves also posts a number of scholarships on the Naviance scholarship page as well as on the bulletin board outside the Counseling Office. Colleges and Universities often have scholarship databases for students to search as well. The University of Arizona, for instance, has a database called Scholarship Universe linked to their
Financial Aid website.
While most scholarships are merit-based (academics, athletics, fine arts, etc.), a number of scholarships are essay
(or art, other) contests for which anybody may apply. These scholarships are often lower in value (e.g., $1000) but they can add up if a student is ambitious enough to research and apply for these scholarships.
While scholarships only make up 3% of college funding overall, some students earn more than that through their doggedness and their willingness to write that 500 word essay on freedom with a prize of $1000, submit a picture of themselves with a “milk mustache,” etc. One has to be willing to do the research, however, as well as the work
of completing the applications, essays, etc.

Hello, CFHS Families!
We were so happy that we were able to bring two amazing outside intervention programs to students and parents at CFHS during the month of February. Our freshman and sophomore students were given a presentation from Breakdown Tucson about current issues that they face day to day. Our parents were able to attend a presentation from Not My Kid about substance abuse. Thank you to everyone who donates to the FFO; because of your donations, we are able to bring
these types of programs to CFHS.
More planning for next year – We NEED YOU to become involved with the FFO! We have many different committees and jobs. We have positions on our Exec
Board to fill. This is a GREAT way to get involved with the school and become a part of our Falcon Family that we are so proud of!!! Want to help teachers, and do a variety of things around the school? Volunteer for the
PVC (Parent Volunteer Center). Are you interested in helping with college visits, and working with the counseling office? Volunteer for the CCC (College Career
Center). Do you like editing, page design, and working with databases? Volunteer for the District Directory committee. If you have questions, please contact me at dlhad@aol.com
if you are interested or have questions.
We are also busy starting to plan for the Fall Fling/Glow
Run!! We are so excited to continue this tradition that we
started last year.
Our next General FFO meeting will be held on Tuesday,
March 15th, at 9:00 AM. Our hot topic for this meeting will be Grading Policies. We will also have a report from our Principal, Dr. Angela Chomokos, and some social
time with other CFHS parents. I hope to see you there!
Thank you,
Lalita Hadley
