Reading
The Reading Program at Rolling Ridge for third grade
is called Literacy Framework. The four components of
this program are:

Word Study-Spelling

Guided Reading

Shared Reading

Writing
This month, we will be completing our novel study and
working on writing a story summary to get ready for
DRA tests in October. Please remember to have your
child read 15 min. or more each night. Students will also
concentrate on setting a purpose for reading as
well as improving their fluency.
Science
In Science, the students will be
learning about matter and its
properties. This will
jjoinclude naming
the three states of matter, how they
change from one state to another, and
giving examples of each state.
Math
We continue to use a critical thinking approach to
mathematics. In this approach, students explore a
variety of math concepts. This month we will be
focusing on the 100’s chart and working on doubles and
combinations of 10. Continue to practice basic math
addition and subtraction facts each night. We will also
be working on place value to 6 digits as well as rounding
to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousands place.
Social Science
In Social Science, the first unit of study is
maps and globes. Students will need to identify
and locate the 7 continents and 5 oceans, as
well as the four hemispheres and explain what
imaginary lines determine the hemispheres. The
students will need to locate the prime meridian,
equator, lines of latitude, and lines of longitude.
Writing
In writing, the students will continue to work
on writing sentences with capital letters and
proper punctuation. Please remind your child
to check for this each time they write,
including on spelling homework. This month,
we will focus on writing a story summary as
well as paragraphs using a topic sentence and
a concluding sentence.

Tuesday-Friday. The test on Friday will come
from both the sorts and word wall words. The
students will have 12 words and 5 dictation
sentences for their spelling test. Please be
sure your child studies for the spelling test
each night. A spelling spiral should come home
every day in which your child will complete their
