BACK TO SCHOOL! Rolling Ridge Roadrunners September 2012 Third Grade Newsletter Reading The Reading Program at Rolling Ridge for third grade is called Literacy Framework. The four components of this program are: Word Study-Spelling Guided Reading Shared Reading Writing This month, we will be completing our novel study and working on writing a story summary to get ready for DRA tests in October. Please remember to have your child read 15 min. or more each night. Students will also concentrate on setting a purpose for reading as well as improving their fluency. Science In Science, the students will be learning about matter and its properties. This will jjoinclude naming the three states of matter, how they change from one state to another, and giving examples of each state. Math We continue to use a critical thinking approach to mathematics. In this approach, students explore a variety of math concepts. This month we will be focusing on the 100’s chart and working on doubles and combinations of 10. Continue to practice basic math addition and subtraction facts each night. We will also be working on place value to 6 digits as well as rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousands place. Social Science In Social Science, the first unit of study is maps and globes. Students will need to identify and locate the 7 continents and 5 oceans, as well as the four hemispheres and explain what imaginary lines determine the hemispheres. The students will need to locate the prime meridian, equator, lines of latitude, and lines of longitude. Writing In writing, the students will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters and proper punctuation. Please remind your child to check for this each time they write, including on spelling homework. This month, we will focus on writing a story summary as well as paragraphs using a topic sentence and a concluding sentence. Third Grade Newsletter Page 2 Spelling On Mondays, students will get 5 new word wall words. They will be using their word sorts Tuesday-Friday. The test on Friday will come from both the sorts and word wall words. The students will have 12 words and 5 dictation sentences for their spelling test. Please be sure your child studies for the spelling test each night. A spelling spiral should come home every day in which your child will complete their spelling assignments.
