Breslin, Executive Director of the Educational Foundation and Vice President for Institutional Advancement, applauds the donors of the College's scholarship program. ANNUAL DINNER Astronaut Col. Eileen M. Collins, the first woman Shuttle commander, was the keynote speaker at the 2008 Dollars for Scholars Dinner. As a community college graduate, Col. Collins was an inspiration to students, particularly those majoring in challenging fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known as STEM fields. Her selection as a speaker complements the College's current STEM initiative and the construction of a STEM Complex on the Marple Campus. Despite the advanced education required to become an astronaut, Col. Collins demonstrated that this goal is achievable for community college graduates and that income and privilege are not barriers to students who choose to reach for the stars. College President Jerome S. Parker welcomes Col. Eileen M. Collins and U.S. Representative Joe Sestak along with Kathleen A. Breslin, Executive Director of the College Educational Foundation and Vice President for Institutional Advancement. 10 Keynote speaker, astronaut Col. Eileen M. Collins, graduated from Corning Community College and became the first woman to pilot and command an American spacecraft. Col. Collins greets the Dollars for Scholars guests. I would love to be able to devote more time to my studies, but at the same time I find I need to work additional shifts to pay for the costs associated with living and pursing my nursing education. This is the reason why a scholarship is so important to me. Nursing Major Justin Tirrell, recipient of the Comcast Cable Communications Scholarship and the student spokesperson at the dinner, enjoyed discussing career opportunities with Col. Collins. 11 SCHOLARSHIP DONOR ELIGIBLE/AWARD CRITERIA ANNUAL AWARD Flora Music Scholarship Anonymous • DCCC student in music program • Financial need • Student in good standing $150 in both fall and spring No application required.
